Yes.

And while we’re at it, fix the Charr armor to accommodate tails.

It’s bad enough that, with GW2’s endgame focusing so much on fashion, that over HALF of the armor available to them does not accommodate their tails (including some CHARR-ONLY armor, as well as armor that was clearly designed for Charr, like Citadel of Flame’s) but it is downright insulting that legendary armor has lazy tail-clipping too.

I can’t bring myself to care even the slightest bit about Legendary Armor if the designers can’t either.

Hi all,

Yesterday we released the precursor of ascended armor. For the Charr and Asura female armor we adapted the female-variant breastplate, flattened out, but still with cups. You’ve rightly pointed out that it looks incongruent with Charr and Asura female anatomy.

We sometimes adapt male-variant and sometimes female-variant armor to use with female Charr and Asura, depending on what looks right for the armor in question. In this case it looks like a male-variant precursor breastplate, which would lead to the male-variant legendary breastplate, would be more in line with what we all expect for Charr and Asura female armor.

Today is one day after release; you’re presumably not that attached to your Charr and Asura female precursor armor yet. Would you like us to swap out the female-variant breastplate for a male-variant one?

Mo

Yes, because in general I like male versions of armor/outfit. But in fact I don’t really care about specific things like number of breasts. Best option is – be able to chose female or male version (not only with legendary armor) but I think its impossible because of various reasons.

Also, at the risk of upsetting some people, please kindly ignore the players saying they like the boob plates for feminine Charr. I, and I know the original designers of the Charr would agree, are strongly considerate of the lack of sexual dimorphism in Charr – males and females tend to appear the same.

But there is no lack of sexual dimorphism in charr. That is not a thing. Is their dimorphism the same as in humans? No, they do not have prominent breasts, but look at a female charr with no armor on, they wear tops while male charr do not, there is clearly a distinction made there. And obviously female charr have different horn and ear configurations than males. You might not recognize these distinctions, “all charr look alike to me,” but that doesn’t mean that the distinctions do not exist. Similarly with Asura, the females wear one-pieces, the males shorts, that would not occur if there were not physical distinctions made, even if they are not obvious to booka.

Regardless, this debate should not devolve into “breasts or no breasts.” It’s not about the breasts. The distinction is in the overall cut of the outfits, and the male versions are not always as interesting as the female one. I for one would love to see the human female variant of the Phoenix armor on my female charr, but that is not an option. It’s not about showing skin" or “cleavage,” it’s about having available the more trimmed, flamboyant armor designs that are more typical of the female armor sets in the game.

I’m sure this has been brought up already by people far more eloquent than myself, but I don’t really feel like reading through the entirety of this thread, and I figure one more comment can’t hurt.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with adding more feminine armor choices for female charr and asura. Yes it’s somewhat lore undriendly, but hell, so are like 90% of the character names people use in this game. (I’ve lost count of how many norn and sylvari I’ve seen with names pulled directly from Japanese anime.) That being said, if you’re going to go that route, you shouldn’t be using human standards of femininity as your baseline. It should be what those races consider feminine.

I don’t mind skin showing necessarily but boob plates/bras makes for incredibly bad armor design. Armor wouldn’t conform that closely to the breasts without it being impractical to wear and put on. Whenever I see armor like that I’m reminded of perverted hentai where clothes magically seems to be skin tight and wrap around the breasts despite being a t-shirt. If I wanted boob plates I’ll roll a female human or play Tera/BnS.

Middle ground – I don’t hate them, but they just aren’t quite right. I’m firmly in the camp of wanting females to look different. (The male shirt is so dang boring!!!!) Sure, it’s in the lore that they don’t normally do that, but my character is exceptional, right? Not to mention with all the races intermingling, it makes sense that some more progressive individuals would be interested in copying other races’ fashion styles.

But my problem is not with them being girly, per se, but just that boob cups are stupid looking. Boob cups with grabby fingers (medium armor) are even worse.

On top of that, these particular boob cups weren’t designed with any character’s body type in mind.

I actually like the charr shirts, but it just seems weird to have the boob circles in the middle of the torso on the light armor – why not make it a trapezoidal or triangular plate that matches their body shape? – and again with the medium armor.

I LOVE the girlyness of the medium armor (the sleeves! the necklace!!!!), for a charr, but for charr and everyone else, I just wish it was a tank top with a sweetheart neckline. For the light armor, I cannot imagine anything looking less comfortable and less kitten, for all races. You can’t sit, you’ll stab your gut. Your boobs are like headlamps and you have a little gremlin between them. If you want sexy, couldn’t you just make a trapezoidal piece of fabric or metal to strap on the front of the torso, and at least then it would seem functional?

Anyway, back on topic, if you are going to keep the outfit design as is instead of creating a non-headlamp version, I think the charr version, and to a lesser extent, the asura version, should have been built from scratch in a way that mimics the human version but is made for their individual body shape. I realize that’s asking a lot, but then… this is precursor armor. It’s arguably one of the most important armor skins in the game.

And yeah, I’ll be That Guy (or Gal, as it happens): charr tail clipping. I know you can do better. You got the tail right on the heavy armor… why not on light/med?

And finally – why the weird face things in the backpack slot location on medium? Why the scary little monster face between the light armor boobs? WHY?

In my opinion, you should never have used male-only versions on female Charr and Asura in the first place. Sometimes the female versions of armour may look even better without all the curves. ;-) Skimpy maybe, but still good.

All you have to do is to look at it as an armour, which has different or skimpy breastplates, and not as an armour, which has armour-like brassieres.

Altogether I still wish for the day, where you update every armour in the game, so the Charr and Asura women can finally use the female-only version. If others dont like it: Get a male character. XD

I vote to change it. It looks out of place and doesn’t fit their bodies. If the only choice is male v female, then change it. My ideal would be to use the female armor, but adjust it. I like having a distinct feminine look for my asura and charr that fits their aesthetic.

Personally, I am yet again disappointed by you, Anet. I know you’re trying hard to fix what wasn’t working in HoT and refocusing your resources, but this is legendary armor. The trust and good will with your community is fragile and you’ve been making large strides towards fixing it, but this is yet another half-kitten idea and implementation. I know it’s only a precursor and not the final product. What I would expect for the final form is that each race gets something similar, but fitted to them. No breast plates on Asura, no tail-clipping for Charr. You’ve shown you can do it with the wedding outfits, but since this is an in-game reward it’s not given the same care and attention that gem store items are. That’s the most upsetting part about this.

It makes me sad that for a LEGENDARY armor, I don’t have a unique race-specific skin, I have to settle with either the female or male version of the human armor. I can’t see myself putting in all the effort just so I can dress up like a human again.

I’m a big fan of feminine armor on Asura so I wouldn’t mind keeping what we have if we flattened the top but seeing as that choice is probably not one that might happen, I fall in the ’don’t care’ camp.

Or give us an in-game choice. So many people will be happy if you gave them the choice instead of choosing for them instead.

A better solution would be simply an armor without boobplate.
Female armor doesn’t need to show off the female breast anatomy, to look good and fitting.

In any case Yes change to male, or better create a new more race sensitive armor, that is still feminin.

If the simple copy, paste and stretch approach is your solution to legendary armor for a game that has five different and unique races, then I am a bit disapointed to be honest.

Mostly, because there are some very distinctive problems there, that seriously should not happen with these kind of prestige armor

So I would ask you to go back to the drawing board and adjust for all races, which would include Charr tails and horns, Asura feet and ears and don’t make the Norn shoulders so giant.

They should remove it to the flat variant. It looks all kinds of wrong on something that doesn’t have anything to put in there, or something that may have two more sets of something but doesn’t have the shape of a humanoid equivalent.

Frankly, I’d argue for removing cups altogether on all races, but that would probably make too many people’s brains implode.

It’s not a matter of variety, but of sesnsitivity and understanding.

Neither Charr or Asura have visible boobs.

Even if they would decide to artifical wear something like that, it wouldn’t fit their anatomy.

Asura are flat and Charr have six breasts by lore.

Given that this is the legendary armor , something like this should not be open to debate, but be in the creational process.

The legendary armor should be fitting for all races.

Thanks for bringing this up Mo.

My short answer is yes.

Issues of sex and gender aside, for the simple purpose of maintaining design consistency I would steer clear of creating armor for female asura or charr that have any human-style breast indicators. Granted, appealing to adolescent boys (and the occasional young lesbian) is a great way to keep the attention of a specific audience. ArenaNet should aspire to more than that.

The original designs for asura and charr females didn’t make any strides toward accenting unrealistic human breasts and we get plenty of that from sylvari, norn and human characters. Any designs that don’t follow the established norm are not only unacceptable; but, from a pure design perspective, unprofessional. New artists and designers who work on game assets should be astute enough to follow the standards set forth in the game or they should be relieved of contributions to the live game before they make grievous errors that may hurt the product.

Besides, we all know that typical fantasy breastplates for females would do nothing in battle except give opponents a great way to break a sternum. Surely your local Iron Legion cubs could tell you that our mighty warrior women need better armor than that.
