Firstly, let me say that GW2 is my favourite MMO. I love everything about it with one small exception, and I think my solution would fix that last thing very nicely.

I, unfortunately, am stuck using a less-than-stable Internet connection, and I’m getting really, really tired of being thrown back to the very beginning of instanced story missions whenever my internet decides to die on me. This is even more annoying when I was nearly at the end of the mission and it happens multiple times, like this morning.

I have been trying to finish up the quest “Temple of the Forgotten God” and I really don’t want to have to see and skip the opening dialogue and fight my way back to the last group of mobs every time my internet cuts out. I literally got to the LAST room five times and five times, my internet died and I had to start over. I should say I started over four times, because I decided to give up on the fifth time my internet died. It’s especially irksome on this particular one, because I personally hate water combat under the best of circumstances and this is NOT the best of circumstances.

One checkpoint in these kinds of instances would solve all of this. At about halfway through, let the players have something that WE would have to activate, which would save our progress to that point and let us pick up where we left off instead of having to start at the beginning over and over again. This would make it the player’s responsibility to remember to use the silly thing and also allow those with better internet connections to ignore it entirely if they want to. There has to be a way to make that work, because right now, the only thing I like better about other MMOs is that my Internet can go out while I’m in an instance and I know I won’t have to start at the beginning again when I sign back in.

For those of you who are going to tell me to just get a better internet provider, there isn’t one. I’m in an apartment, so my choices are pretty limited from the start and of the two companies that would serve my area, I’ve already got the better of them. And I don’t really expect anything to come of this. I guess I just felt that venting like this would be healthier than punching my desk in frustration.

That particular mission is very annoying even with a perfect connection. Underwater combat, ugh… I have no idea what Anet was smoking when they thought it up.

Dont get your hopes up for any sort of fix, there nothing that will be done about this at this stage of the game. Try it in the middle of the night perhaps? If your internet cant stay up for 20-30 minutes straight you have a more serious problem than not being able to finish a story mission :p

Also try seeing if someone will help you run it. That way you should get to the end of it quicker and reduce the chances of your internet going out on you.

“a way to make that work” actually exists in GW1. That feature didn’t exist at launch though. As long as you can reconnect within the time limit disconnects weren’t an issue.

A slightly different but similar thing also exist in Path of Exile. Instances there have a 15 minute idle timer. You can disconnect/crash/whatever but as long as you get back within 15 minutes you can resume where you left off. It also provides a way to start a new instance instead of resuming in case you want to restart.
