China GW2 community is in chaos atm.
The differences in the China client are not “testing the waters.”
Those level-up restrictions they have in place are likely requirements by KongZhong to guide a player through the different intricacies and systems of Guild Wars 2.

its not just those restrictions. have you seen their gem store?
just one example,
38 gems for a dye evaluator, which is the only way one can open an unidentified dye in the chinese version
looool thats incredible!

So I guess no one understands that once a game gets published in China, the company no longer has control of the Chinese version by law?
China greatly dislikes foreign business. There is not a kitten thing Anet can do other then say “Please don’t”.
The reason Anet is deleting threads like this is because they quite honestly waste forum space. You may as well be telling Anet to yell at a mountain and demand it move to the side for them.

It doesn’t have to be completely garbage like this just because it’s in China. Maybe anet/ncsoft should have had someone else handle it to keep the integrity of their game.
Not every mmo has to be like this in china.

But they often are, this type of thing is pretty common in Chinese versions of MMOs.
Trust me, I’m not saying what is being done with the Chinese version is right, but it’s not really in Anet’s hands.

and nearly everyone knows why.
The Chinese GW2 community is providing invaluable insight to how a player base will react to the things you have been testing the waters with, Anet
For yourselves, for us, and for the game you have put so much time and effort into, take lots of notes.
Dolphin clicks. No idea what you are talking about.
I think the way the game is being implemented in Chine has something to do with their laws regarding online gaming… not really sure though

Combination of laws and the publisher wanting as much money as possible, yes.
Really unfortunate, I hope Chinese players can get their hands on the NA version and the ping is reasonable.

I think they can, just not legally. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this please.

I am not calling out Anet
Mhmm, most asian games are created like that so I don’t think it would have been an issue if a new game got released as the following and still got millions of players, cause many of the asian games already do.
However, the community awaiting GW2 to be released as the same in the east, is what is leading to this disappointement.
On the other hand, Anet have almost no power over what is happening, becaue the prices and twisted mechanics are stuff to be decided by the publishers aka the chiense company. The fact that Anet is the one taking care of the prices etc. in the west is becasue NcSoft is the publishing company and is giving Anet the freedom to do so.
Sadly enough though, I have played asian games before and asian companies don’t even let the players state what they think, deleting every negative thread from their forums which I suspect happening here too.
My Mesmer sends a warm welcome to Chinese players
Is that Spring Tide dye you got over there?
As long as NCSOFT gets a cut of the sales from Kongzhong, they don’t care.
It’s like in an interview with the late author Richard Matheson when asked if he cared that nobody had yet done a true to the novel movie version of “I Am Legend”. His reply was “not as long as they keep writing checks”.
And there is a nice little slide show that you can sort of read with google translate discussing the novel concept in China about buying the game. They imply that this is a first for an MMO in China.

Says who? Who’s to say ANet or NCSoft teams aren’t upset about it? You know there’s virtually nothing they can do other than, as said before, plead “please don’t.”
I’m sure they’re watching with great interest to see if it works. There’s probably some guy at NCSoft thinking, “dye evaluator? d’oh, why didn’t I think of that….”
the only way Anet can fix it is they have offshore servers that chinese players can play. then again that huge Chinese made firewall won’t let Chinese citizens look at anything outside of China.
It really is out of Anet’s hands now, and they will lose any profit since the country that is China owns their own GW2 game and will sell it the way they see fit.
Haha China goes pay to win,let us all pretend how shock’d we are XD
I DON’ CARE. Stop coming here complaining for your kitten. We can’t do anything about it. Personaly even if I could I wouldn’t. Once the game was given to a publisher, ANet can’t do anything about it. I think if NCSoft wanted to change stuff in the game here, it would be the same situation, ANet couldn’t do anything about it (not sure about this)
TL:DR:
It’s your problem, deal with it.

You have an odd way of not calling someone out. If that wasn’t your intent, I’d advise that you choose the language in your thesis a little more carefully. Also, from what I’ve seen, Anet isn’t testing the waters with much of anything. Most of the methods and tools that are employed in the Western release cash shop are standard fare. If anything, you should take issue with them using cash shop incentives that are already accepted by many other companies.
Considering the poor quality control, ANet will merge as many changes as possible to try to reduce the bug count.
Also, we won’t get the VIP system, but maybe we’ll get some sort of royalty system instead.

Who wrote the code for all these p2win walls in the Chinese client?
Was it the publisher or was it Anet?
Who wrote the code for all these p2win walls in the Chinese client?
Was it the publisher or was it Anet?
The most probable answer is Anet. It would be an awkward mess trying to have a 3rd party of a different language just picking up a foreign code and writing into it.
Idk why so much bla bla anet give the chinese to publish the game in china they provide updates fixes and in exchange they get $ nothing more so stop making 10000 threads about chinese version i really don’t give a . they set the game how they want if ppl from there don’t like it no one force them to play period and even if anet implement vip system here you’re not forced to buy it so stop QQ everywhere.
Ps: Sorry for mistakes english is my 3rd language

This is the norm in China. It’s just a small minority freaking out because they know of the lack of restrictions in the eastern version.

western* and just because it’s the norm doesn’t mean it’s right
different cultures, different markets, different products, different marketing strategies, is that really so hard to understand? If they try to bring eastern standards stuff to western markets, you are free to leave. Yes, your wallet belongs to you. It is as easy as that.

Watchwork mining pick: gives boost: chance for sprockets as well as standard bonuses.
Airship pass: airship has more than the royal terrace.
yes this is very light stuff, for now
Anet is not responding to the current criticisms of them because they want to see how the players will ultimately feel about these things after they have been here a while, so they know their limits with what they can do in the future in those regards. If that is not testing the waters, then the language I chose must not be English.
Now, what exactly do you say I’m calling Anet out on? Testing the waters?
I am not,
I am stating that they are, but in my opinion, need test the water no further, and simply look at the current state of GW2 in China. All of their answers to “how will players respond to this thing in the gem store that will be better than what you can get in game” .
Well, this question is pretty much being answered atm, and the threshold at which players simply wont take it anymore has been revealed, very clearly, and it would be foolish for Anet not to note that threshold for future reference.
I’m sure they’re watching with great interest to see if it works. There’s probably some guy at NCSoft thinking, “dye evaluator? d’oh, why didn’t I think of that….”
Shhhh, don’t give them ideas, the game has enough money grubbing in the gem store.

Yeah, actually you didn’t have to explain that to me. But my point still stands… Raising awareness… about what? About what happens to GW2 China? Why should I care? Again, why should i care? Are we talking about humanitarian situations? Are we talking about a crisis where people are dying and human rights are being trampled on? No, we are talking about a game that’s about to get released in a fashion common to most, if not all other Chinese games. I really don’t get it, why should the western GW2 population care about it? It’s highly unlikely the same system is going to be implemented, even if it were implemented we can’t really do anything about it yet. Once stuff will happen here, we’ll deal with it, and probably a good lot of GW2’s population will quit the game.
Even if you call it discussion I actually consider it off topic in these forums. These forums are for the western GW2 not China’s, we’re not talking about the same game here anymore.
It’s a release in China, I couldn’t give a kitten less. I hope Anet and NCSoft make bank, and turn our RNG back to how it was at launch… That’s what I care about.
Unlucky since launch, RNG isn’t random

and to make it harder for the legendary CN players to farm obscene amounts of gold to easily, remember you can exchange gold to gems and vise versa.
The gameplay changes are merely a reflection of the play style there, however I do understand the outrage about the dreaded VIP thing, which is not canon for gw2.
Can t you buy an Eu/Us version of the game?
Can t you buy an Eu/Us version of the game?
yes they could import it and play but….
I foresee this kitten khong zhong publisher trying to block anyone with a CN IP from accessing the NA / EU version of the game in the not so far off future.
Ncsoft and A.net themselves will not block them but khong zhong and some vested entity over there will try for sure.
Really? Who cares?
We live in Europe/Americas if the Chinese put up with that rubbish, there problem.
If they try any of that over here they will have near 0 players, they know that.

you should care, the game doing well over there translates into more profit for a.net.
which means more content and more nice things for us all.

I don’t. Anet needs to get out from under the MMO killer before making bank and filling someone else’s coffers.
For the record, NCSoft is primarily an eastern market catering company. This does not mean they do not make games for the western market…but their main income comes from the far east. Don’t believe it? Here. See for yourself. Many more locations in the orient than in western locales.
http://us.ncsoft.com/en/corporate/
It’s my opinion NCSoft turned its collective back on the western market a few years ago with it’s decision to “realign company focus and publishing support”.
I’m sure they’re watching with great interest to see if it works. There’s probably some guy at NCSoft thinking, “dye evaluator? d’oh, why didn’t I think of that….”

Ok. Fine, forget the issue of calling them out. I do believe, however, that your issue with pointing to the reactions of a different region and culture as evidence of what may happen here is a little flawed. China is not North America, it is not Europe, it is not South America, not Japan, etc. What may be acceptable or unacceptable there for business practices is not a 1:1 translation of events elsewhere, in fact, it may not come close. Just as an example of trends in a different country, digital sales in Japan were (maybe still are) not heavily accepted by the gaming population as compared to the US where the acceptance rate was considerably higher. This affected how publishers and developers decided how to release games in these regions and they were treated differently from each other.
If you just want to straight up say that you don’t believe that whatever region you are from wants Anet to use microtransactions in the way that they have, there are a lot of threads already where you can voice that opinion. But I do feel that you are, perhaps unintentionally, trying to leverage useless data against Anet to get them to change course. There are way more relevant arguments to make than this.
In my opiprofitnion, I don’t think A.net will change something, since they and KZW share the profit. what I hope now is the IP address in China won’t be banned. That’s enough…

The way I see it, humans are humans, and the threshold seems to be much higher in China than it is in America, if going by what’s been said, these kinds of things are such common practice there. There was already so much uproar about the watchwork mining pick, the original flamekissed armour, etc, and these are/were pay to win in extremely minor ways.
Considering the fact that these kinds of things seem to be accepted much less by the North American GW2 community, I think it would be safe for Anet to look at whats happening and agree that it would be a very bad idea to try bringing anything from the China GW2 to here.
(edited by Hofulu.7325)
Many western mobile apps and games these days do worse things than what’s in the Chinese version, so no, the “different culture” excuse doesn’t fly.
They’ve already said they’re going to follow the same business model as the western version, anyway, so we’ll get the same outrage here but people will say the complaints are the minority.
