…radios? Or any other perhaps more fantastical communications device(s) we could use when we need to signal the crew of one of the afore-mentioned technologically advanced machines that we’re ready to be picked up and we’d rather not make a big HEY HERE WE ARE scene in the middle of enemy territory?

For that matter, why do we need choppers anyway, or submarines, or even caravans when we have all those wonderful waypoints that preclude even the suggestion of the use of you know whats?

Gosh, when one thinks about it, the only practical use for caravans or any other form of physical transport living or mechanical in our little corner of Tyria would be when there’s a need to construct new waypoints in areas not yet waypointed. Well, beyond traveling short distances, like down to the corner grocery for a sack of beans or whatever.

Is it not so?

Author’s note: this thread was inspired by a thread up in the Echoes of the Past subform, but this is a topic that goes far, far beyond the unwise shooting of a flare while deep within enemy territory.

Design flaws and budget cuts are a bad mix. Portable communication devices are obviously extremly expensive in the world of Tyria (until now, just waiting for Nornkia to kick in with their new mobile devices) and Im pretty sure the pact choppers dont have radio systems on board too. And transporting large amount of cargo is expensive and needs a lot of energy so mostly its cheaper to send a caravan. Also waypointing is not healthy for you since you are exposed to radiation everytime you port.
Also think about this: If you use a waypoint in a enemy territory you are making yourself an easy target, the enemy just needs to aim for the WP to get some kills.

A waypoint requires extremely rare materials to construct. As they border on dragon magic each waypoint requires the crystallized heart of a dragon in order to function. Without that rare material you run the risk of this happening.

There are some asura communication devices used in a few parts of the personal story, if you take the right paths.

I’m sure the charr will figure out radios soon, if they’re not working on it already.

As for why not use gates and waypoints for everything? Scale and size. We’ve never seen anything larger than a norn use a waypoint, it’s quite possible that there’s a size/mass limit on those. And gates need to be big enough for things to fit through them. The Aetherblades were believed to be working on portals big enough for their ships to pass through at one point, but I don’t know if they ever got finished. Asura gates are supposed to cost to use, as well, that just seems to be handwaved away for PCs. There used to be a charr arguing about the price of taking his goods through the portals with an asura in LA (pre-destruction).

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

There is also the personal golem used by the Halloween asura for communication.

but then again in a world where the letter carrying birds are this fast…

The Asura were too busy creating an 8 bit goofy world you teleport into to play around in instead of worrying about creating communication devices during the times of a dragon/zombie threat.

as mentioned, there is a personal golem used in the haloween event for long distance communication, tho it could be only one way…

also, in divinity reach at the ebon hawk asura gate we hear how kitten expencive it would be transporting a caravan trough a asura GATE..yet alone on a personal waypoint.

speaking of personal waypoints….being personal it would suggest only being used by 1 person at a time.

also…its a game

Its like trying to explain minecraft physics….

There are sort of radio transmitters, in a way. One example of this is the Renowned Heart in Frostgorge Sound where you put on the Dredge mining suit and you can wirelessly contact the Renowned Heart vendor for instructions of where to go. There are probably a few more examples that I can’t think of as well.

I’d say lore wise they are probably still in beta testing before they become widely available throughout Tyria.

For the most part I’ve seen a serious lack of vision among Asura in how their technology progresses.
What they have:
Robotics
Computers
Teleportation portals
Particle accelerators

What they should have had
Flying saucers (or other space ships)
Advanced weaponry (why am I using a sword and not a lightsaber! and no laser guns?)
Awesome robotics: I’m talking 100 meter tall mechanical dragons, not tiny humanoid “golems” that all look the same.
Hover Tanks: So we can make any number of stone platforms float but not make a tank?
Wireless communication (obviously)

They should have given the pact these things. Mordremoth would be powerless against an army of mechadragons (as would the rest of tyria for that matter).

If i had the choice I would have joined the Inquest and set that lack of vision straight but alas I was told to hate them and never given the chance to think for myself in that regard.

Since I can send an instantaneous message to any other PC in-game, they should have sent such a mail message instead of shooting a flare. But it has always been painfully obvious that whoever is writing the Living Story has no knowledge whatever of tactics and/or strategy. If I was writing anything about combat I would have some kind of military adviser to run stories past. An ex-military person or something.

It would cut into Evon’s carrier pigeon profits. So, no, no radios.

I thought it was going to be about motorcycles and tanks. =P

Yeah the Asura are too much about inventing for the sake of inventing, very little thought is put into practical applications or improving existing designs. I think the fact that in 250 years the height of golem combat tactics is still “punch things” should tell you all you need to know about how they appreciate military inventions/designs.

That said don’t count on the inquest to create revolutionary designs, they’re still asura after all. Only difference between them and the rest is the lack of ethics, they’re still in it purely “FOR SCIENCE!” so don’t expect much other than the golems to be red colored instead of blue.

The Pact has surely got one of these babies installed on every land, sea, or air vessel in operation. If not, why the heck not? With tech like this available, the humble flare has lost all its flair!
