From logging in this morning, the nice friendly server maps are now full of very abusive people, swearing and bullying seem to be rife. Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know if ArenaNet is planning anything to fix this situation they have created? I realize that to some it is normal behavior but I stayed in my relatively low populated server because everyone was nice and friendly there… Would making it so when someone is reported and profanity is found in their chats they can be instantly banned for a short duration?

Yes, you report those who are abusive, swearing and bullying and if confirmed by the logs then something will be done.

I was in a very populated server, but with a very friendly community. I’ve already noticed additional vitriol, and plan on reminding people, especially in cities, that verbal abuse is a reason to report someone.

I ran a dungeon with a very nice group of people with Chinese user tags and character names and who all spoke to one another in Chinese throughout the entire run the other day. I thought the cultural mix was kind of fun. I chatted “xiexie” to them at the end, which I know isn’t technically correct but unfortunately us English users are for some reason prevented from typing in Asian languages on our computers, so I tried to work with what I’ve got.

I’ve also run into people speaking Malay in some maps, Fields of Ruin in particular. And then there’s Spanish users, but that’s not really new.

I think it’s kind of fun, personally.

But the abusive users are more than a little obnoxious. I was in Queensdale leveling a new alt yesterday and there were a group of “experienced” players berating and bullying a first-time user for fighting a champ out of the order of their precious train. They went so far as to tell him that he wasn’t allowed to do champ events out of order and told him to either fall in line or stop playing.

I reported them for harassment, obviously, and whispered the new player telling him to ignore them and play exactly the way he/she wanted to.

(As a note, I understand that for fluidity purposes it’s typically best to follow the “correct” order with the champ train, but even so that shouldn’t stop players, especially new players, from doing what events they want whenever they want to do them).

@Blair

You did the right thing, though in their defense, many participants of the Queensdale train really don’t know any better, because that’s what they have been taught by those before them.

That said, if I see them getting too obnoxious about a newbie killing a champ out of turn, I usually end up teaming up with that newbie and disrupting the train further (sometimes even forming a second train in the process).

I am currently away from my GW2 computer, for family/health reasons, but if the megaservers and the rest of the patch somehow disrupts the train, then I am grateful… and yes, I admit I have joined the train when it is convenient to do so, like when it matches the dailies/monthlies.

Due to my absense, it seems I have also been spared of much of the toxicity I read about in the forums, but if that is the price to be paid for the introduction of the megaservers, I think I’d rather deal with the train, at least people in general are more civil that way.

Instead of helping them to disturb the train, I prefer to explain the basics (dodge, cast while running, straf dodge, waypoints, …)

Its not a clash of cultures its the lack of it. Ppl can view things differently and still get alone and play in the same world and same system its the outliers who realty hold to no cultures that tend to abuse other ppl with in cultures that they do not understand. Humans will act like Humans when they are faced with non real ppl images and words that in many ways are “less” then humans. The best thing you can do in block report this is how the freedom of the web works and do not get on the level of ppl who are abusing other ppl and these freedoms of the web.

I hate bullying, but honestly a new player can’t kill a champ alone, he’d be lucky to stay alive long enough.
So often times thats just a seasoned player or two doing it on propose with the clear intention to upset a group of people they know it’s out there.

I seldom see such behaviour, though I usually point out that no-one “owns” any mob in mapchat when it happens. Sometimes I get whisper from the newbie, and then I explain about the train and the wp’s. And the report-system.
On the other hand, they might as well start to learn how to train, as it now seems to be trains/zergs everywhere.

I was in queensdale and had the opposite groups of people were camping champs and calling everyone noobs for running a train and trains make it hard for newbies to solo them. I was like most 80’s have issues soloing champs.. a new player would get stomped. >.>

Or sometimes you’re in the neighborhood and not one to pass up the opportunity for a little brawl with a champion, or you’re seeking a sparring partner to try out change in your build, or your character being a part of Tyria and a hero decides to help the locals.

There may be many reason for me to engage a champion but deliberately upsetting a group of players, champ train or other, is not one of them. Thank you.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I believe he killed it with other random players who happened to be around at the time. He didn’t solo it. He also clearly said he was new. I suppose he could have been lying, but I like to think he wasn’t.

Sadly, server bashing is now common in any map plagued by the Megaserver. Just like it happened in previous overflows at big events. Just like we predicted it will happen once our established communities are destroyed by Anet.

Agreed at 200%. Zerg trains are often so obsessed by the profitability and the efficience of gold/hour that they forget there are players out there that might be enjoying the game for what It is (espcecially in low level zones like queensdale), or simply avoiding trains to enjoy a little challenge in defeating champs.

Sadly, in these situations, the more the louder… not easy when people are yelling at you, telling you are not in the line, playing correctly, and It gives a poor image of the player’s community. And in this situations you feel you are in the wrong place, but you are not. Reporting is the only solution for these inappropriate behavior to cease.

(IMHO zerg train has been born from one of the major game’s flaws (exploit?) : the champ AI stalls when there are too many players)

Seen this too, a few people were killing a champ and telling people to go away and swearing at them etc.. there are so many more places than QD to solo champs or test builds but these people just like to make trouble.

Turn off all chat. Pretend that the other (now mute) players are just glitchy NPCs with erratic behavior. Report them as bugs. Face the reality that they are not bugs and nothing will be done. Despair.

So much for the massive multiplayer experience.

Hating Megaserver’s guts completely. Language filters aren’t even pretending to be working. Gold spammers (!!!!) – something I never saw here before.

I want next hub to be in WvW where only my server’s dudes will be. I have enough globalization IRL to be haunted by invasive people in what’s suppose to be an enjoyable hobby.

Unfortunately, turning off all chat is exactly what hurts mega-events which require a minimum of coordination…
So not only are those obsessed with defending their precious champ runs (and whatever else they use as an excuse to abuse other players) ruining the fun for unassuming players, they are hurting everyone’s chances at having a fun and successful experience at the kind of LS content ArenaNet loves to push out.

So report the hell out of them >:]

Yes I have noticed this and Have been on the receiving end of it many times since the megaserver, not just from random other players from other parts of the world who get very abusive because I’m British, but from my own as well. I frequently see Newbies getting put off because they ask a simple question any newbie is bound to ask about something, but for an answer the get a mountain of abuse from other players, called noob being the lesser of the insults but the teasing that then follows there after, your often looking at prolonged and sustained bullying for the “crime” of being new. thats just one example. when I first joined it was friendly and i met a number of nice people, formed a guild, then that formed into sort of guild alliances in an odd sort of way.
But since April 14 I’ve seen more trolls and bullies and even LFG a rise in system abuse, and glitching in Dungeons, you can’t even get into Orr’s The ruined city of Arah Dungeon with out them saying 14+gold to join and when you make your own they merge you and demand gold or that you be a class type and then boot you and forcing you to post up again to go though the same process a few times over.
so how are people meant to fin their story? The player behaviour now is just disgusting!

It’s truly sad.

Back in my GW1 days (yes, I went there) they didn’t have “worlds” but districts that all cultures could hop between regardless of location. There were people from all walks of life, and all nationalities in almost all the districts. When a district filled up, a new district would form. I saw days with only 2 or 3 districts, and others with 15 or 16. It may be slightly rose tinted, but my memories are of decent people. Yes, there was always “that guy” who would stir things up, but in general, people were more tolerant.

Having a megaserver isn’t the problem. By GW1 standards, a megaserver is simply an unnamed district. When it’s full, another opens up. It would be nice if we had an option of hopping between them, but since we can’t, we have to learn to handle all the new people.

The toxicity of the player base has nothing to do with the megaserver. It has to do with entitlement some seem to feel and the anonymity of the internet. People who would never dream of speaking that way to a person face to face are more likely to say or do anything here.

Unfortunately, all we can do is report the abusers and wait for Anet to come up with a solution.
