I have 2 lvl 80 character, my main, which is a level 80 Norn Mesmer, pimped to the brim in exotics, and a lvl 80 ranger which i bought cleric gear for and 100% regret it, plus pet mechanics feel very dodgy.

So, since i’m coming back to GW2 now, i want to build up a new character, which will be either a Necromancer, a Thief, or an Engineer.

I need help deciding based on my experiences with their counterparts from GW1.
I loved playing a blood necro in GW1, lifestealing and hex builds especially, and i loved playing assassin with a burst kill build.

as for the engineer, i just love his kit in terms of originality.

I’ll mainly be playing WvW, hardly any pvp.

Play a Thief, everyone loves thieves! No, maybe I got that backwards. I love my Thief, even if they are underpowered in PvE. It’s a class you really gotta stay on your toes to play, because they’re so squishy that all their defense is in their better movement and evade ability; a proper made D/D Thief will have 4-6 evades to everyone else’s 2-3. After playing a thief every other class seemed boring to me by comparison. But everyone hates thieves and Thief nerfs have been a favorite hobby of Anet in the past, so there’s that to consider.

I was underwhelmed by Necros – they just didn’t pop for me.

Engineer is a pretty nifty class, what with all its kits and its flavor being different from most other classes. It’s one I keep trying to get back to, but I’ve played my Thief character so long now it feels weird trying to spend much time with an alt.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

I would actually recommend against a necromancer, as much as I love them. I’m pretty sure that the two things you want (Interesting hexes and life steal) are largely not present on the GW2 version of the necromancer. At least, every time I hear people compare the necromancer of GW1 and GW2, the loss of Hexes and the poor life steal tend to come up very often.

If you want a bursty killer thief, you could definitely do that. If you’re used to running a mesmer, you can probably pick up on the defenses that a thief has to rely on quickly enough.

Engineers I know very little about. I plan on making one myself soon because I want to experiment with a full turret build.

Mixing insults with your post is like pooping in a salad.
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.

Engineer is definitely working as intended in WvW and PVP in fact that’s all they spent time balancing in that class.

PVE however it’s one of the most broken classes out there. They just can’t seem to make up their mind as to whether it’s an adventurer class or if it’s a soldier class.

Personally I’d rather them make it a soldier class instead and just give us access to heavy armors because our traits are designed for that anyways might as well.
