These exist in the game, but only if you buy them for your home instance. This makes it very frustrating to do anything with either material, since you have no way to reliably get it. It would be really nice if they would just have some nodes for these in the world in towns and city areas. That would fix the current bottleneck issues with Tailoring, Leatherworking, etc. where you just cannot get the base materials in sufficient quantity to advance.

Do you not salvage all your blues and greens? I get a lot of cloth and leather. More than I can use. Never had an issue at all.

it would be really cool if say for example you could go to a bandit camp and maybe they have a tanning rack or something like that up and you can get a bit. certainly it would be better than just salvaging for it

I need Jute. Salvaging blues and greens gives you tons of Wool. There is no good way to get Jute.

Salvage them on an appropriate low level character.

I shouldn’t have to make and run around with a low level mule just so I can get the materials I need to actually do anything in a crafting discipline.

While you can make a low level, you don’t have to play it. Park it at a chest for a daily harvest and give it containers to open that you get from your other chars. You can also use a low level to do a weekly key run then delete and repeat, using tomes to get it to level 10.

Be careful what you ask for

Exactly, I have a level 50 I keep in LA near the Crafting Stations to open bags/salvage gear for Linen, Cotton and Wool.

The sheer fact that you have to exploit how material acquisition works should ring an alarm bell that there is a problem.

Making cloth/leather node would devalue a lot of the loot you receive. Trophy, blue/green cloth/leather items, overall it would decrease the value of loot you are receiving from mobs. I do not see why players keep bringing this up when the system has always worked this way. Cloth/leather comes from bags/salvage.

Sell your ‘tons of wool’ and buy jute. Wool is going for 2s88c, Jute for 1s35c. Easy-peasy, and make Gold, as well.

See i’ve never understood why GW2 players are like this, every thread you go with this discussion you hear the same answers from longtime players.

Every method of gathering cloth and leather is also valid for all the other basic crafting materials you need, the reason why people don’t open bags on a level 1 character to gather copper ore is because there’s a much more convenient way to get that material.

I don’t see how it makes sense that i can just zone out for half an hour to gather what i need for weaponcrafting but if i want to level my tailoring i need to go through a nonsensical hassle of gathering bags with my high level characters, if i even have a high level character at the time, transfer all the bags to another character and then open them to salvage the materials.

Farming for gold is easier than farming items most of the time. You can either farm the items or farm for gold to buy the items. Farming for items is a pain and you start to notice why some items cost more when you try to farm for it.

The problem isnt really that farming for items is a pain, its that farming for cloth and leather specifically is much more of a pain than farming for other analogue materials like ores and lumber.

No, this whispers a reminder: the TP makes it possible to avoid farming the entire shopping list of things you want, by selling off all the stuff you don’t.

This isn’t ‘exploiting how material acquisition works’ — it’s about adapting to the game’s actual mechanics, rather than how it works in other games.

I’m sorry but opening containers on other characters that are lower level specifically to get around the changes made to loot rewards, so that you can salvage for material seems like a pretty much like exploiting the games mechanics. You can call it ‘adapting’ if that makes you feel better, but it does not change the fact that the solution to a problem is this asinine method instead of reverting the changes they made to loot to begin with or just increasing the rate of acquisition for said materials across the board.

Do you not salvage all your blues and greens? I get a lot of cloth and leather. More than I can use. Never had an issue at all.

They scale with the character level past starting areas. In most of the game a level 80 character will get mostly level 76-80 items, which salvage mostly into Mithril

And the very spirit of the game clashes with gimmicks such as leaving characters at low levels to open Packaged Goods like champion bags, PvP loot bags and HoT caches to get lower level items to salvage like many people have resorted to.

Basic leather and cloth needs better methods of acquisition. Specific limited methods that allow an account to get reasonable amounts over time.

Map bonus rewards with leather and cloth listed have failed to do this. Drops, gear and salvageable hides are too unreliable and makes their acqusition too boring for too many people. Any other existing method like mystic forgin karma gear or keeping bags to open at low levels is basically a gimmick that is not only soul-crushingly boring for way too many people, but it is also potentially harmful to your hands because of all the clicking within a short time it requires (now slightly reduces thanks to vendor quantity spinners).

And so, something must be done about it. And that something can’t be any of what has been done to adress this issue until know, because we know it doesn’t work.

So what should it be? Well, something that we know works. Like creating nodes for these materials, or replacing the bonus chests in meta-events across the world with Hero’s Choice chests that let you choose between several different guaranteed rewards such as 1-2 bags of rares, stacks of 15-50 of a material, 2-3 rare crests and the like.

The TP has a good supply of the stuff proving that this isn’t a game-breaking issue.
When a player is levelling up a craft they are pretty much ALWAYS going to need more than what they have of a given item. It’s not restricted to any one thing but is always going to crop up when you’ve suddenly run out of item x and realise it’s not that easy to go get more of it from the environment.
Substitute leather for orbs or maguuma lily or diamond or ecto.
The answer is to trade what you have and don’t need for what you do. If you needed leather and there wasn’t any leather on the TP then there’d be a game problem. This is a player problem.

It does amaze me that after playing all day across multiple characters I still have no leather, I do find it weird it’s capped to a level range but that’s as far as it goes, I can just flog some excess ancient wood or ori to fund my leather needs.

Sorry OP but -1, these are not needed. As long as there are item drops in game there is a ready source for these, its up to the player base.

I’m sorry, but why do you do that if you don’t like it? Just sell the stuff you have that you don’t need; buy the stuff you do.

You keep asserting that there’s a problem, without demonstrating that there is one. There’s no economic reason the supply of one type of mat has to be the same as another or one tier to be like another.

It’s a preference to want the economy to be ‘even’; it’s not required (and it actually makes it more difficult to have a vibrant, healthy, equilibrium).
