Why can we not harvest silk from plants (by extracting them from caterpillars on them) or get Linen from the flax plant?

I don’t think it takes much effort to add cloth harvesting nodes in-game. It would be a very good step towards balancing the mats needed for Ascended gear as well. Bolts of damask is ridiculously expensive compared to the squares and bars…

Sure, they could have flax nodes that then need to be woven into linen, or the cotton plants into cotton cloth (don’t know what jute is from), but do you want to slaughter rams to harvest wool? Or, if we’re going down this road, why not kill deer to get leather scraps? Or would we need to get skins that then have to be tanned into leather scraps? It seems to just inflate database bloat with an extra crafting step.

There’s more than enough gear dropping from lower areas that can be salvaged for scraps that we don’t /need/ new harvesting nodes or slaughtering animals, but it could certainly be an interesting option.

You know what I do when I need low level ore or lumber? I go to the appropriate zone and harvest it with harvesting tools. You know what I do when I need low level leather or cloth? I go to the appropriate zone and kill the appropriate mobs and hope I pass not one, but two and sometimes three RNG checks to get the leather or cloth I need.

There’s lots of outposts of the “evil” factions like inquests, flame legion and nightmare court. These usually have a veteran or champion guarding them.

They should use that.

You kill the veteran, and a “Cloth rack” node only those that participated can see appears there, and you use it for some cloth.

Same for leather nodes, but with the tribal races. Defeat a camp of grawl, you can use the “stack of pelts” node to get some leather.

Depends on what they are wearing, 2/3 of the time they are wearing clothing that salvages into cheap leather or mithril. :/

And in addition, the game prioritizes drops based on your weight class. So medium is supposed to get more leather and heavy to get more metals. It’s only the light classes that is set to get more cloth.

That won’t do.

People already get enough cloth from salvaging.

The point is giving a node alternative for cloth for those who would rather explore and gather in the world than spend hours farming Orr events to then salvage the cloth.

Those who already do that will have no problems gettig more of any material.

But for many of us that’s as boring as watching grass grow on Orr.

Also, that’ll only work for silk/gossamer. Unless you expect people to constantly make alts so they get items to salvage at certain levels for the other types of cloth needed for damask.

Its both of those things. But im with you here, the cost of linen is insane compared to the cost of the leather and metal and even wood of the same tier. Silk too, even with the chest farm in SW. So some way to get cloth would be welcome.

And that’s a problem with light armor. They simply extended the default formula for armor to shift from T6 to ascended mats and since light always needed more cloth than the other two armor weights, that didn’t change.

The problem is partially when they created the crafting recipe for Damask silk was dirt cheap, basically at vendor price so instead of 150 of T5 leather or 100 of T5 metal you need 300 T5 cloth (ie Silk Scraps). And because Damask is used in all armor weights, multiply that by 300 Silk Scraps each, the glut was vanquished quickly and the price rose much more than with Hard Leather or Mithril.

So now due to the T5 prices and amounts it’s 57% of the cost to craft Damask Vs 7.3% for Elonian Leather or 15.9% for Deldrimor Steel.

Good news is silk has come down about 40% from it’s peak.

was not a good solution to the problem. It created imbalance, spikes, and theoretically will eventually end up the same way, once enough people finally get enough of it. The production of silk will stay fairly high while the demand slowly dwindles.

If they had a problem with over production
they should have come up with a short term reason to destroy tons of silk.
reduced the amount of silk created without intent drastically
created means for silk to be specifically sought out.

Then the market would regulate the cost AND supply of silk, instead of the economy having to be designed to consume vast amounts of the item that was created without intent.

And they could have created a less obnoxious recipe for ascended items.

By changing the refinement from 2 to 3 and then requiring 100 instead of 50 and overlooking that Damask will be used in quantity in all armors combined to wipe out the silk scrap glut which shot the price up.

Before this it was obvious that it along with other T5 common mats dropped in excessive quantity due to salvaging unwanted Level 80 items. Mithrils’ saving grace was it was also used in weapons which kept the price from bottoming out. Thick Leather doesn’t have a sink so it’s glut has recovered.

I listed this once before, if you craft a full set of each weight of ascended armor, you would need 25,500 silk scraps; 3,600 thick leather sections and 1600 mithirl ore. The 7x difference between the two, need 3 to refine T5 mats is exactly why the silk glut is gone and the price being high Vs still a glut and TP price at minimum.

The rest of the common refined components are in the same ratio, 20 T2; 10 T3; 20 T4. But T5 it’s 100 for light, 50 for medium and 50 for heavy.

Even if they didn’t bump Silk Bolts from 2 to 3 and tripled the requirement of refined T5, you would still need 8,500 silk scraps compared to 3,600 thick leather and 1600 mithril. Demand would still be up there as the price increases in the other cloths still show, so light will still be more expensive, just not as extreme.

Light armor always require twice as much highest tier refined cloth mat as medium and heavy. It’s just that for exotic T6 is dirt cheap, relatively so you don’t notice.

yes, this was always an imbalance in design, and its why initially silk was more expensive than leather and metals. Eventually people didnt need it for their gear any more and the price dropped to vendor.
Which amazes me, you have a problem in your basic item/crafting design, then you basically recreate the problem with a higher factor when designing a solution to another problem.

anyhow back to the point, some form of opt in only method for obtaining cloth should have been in the game, and still has a place. Of course they would have to drastically reduce the amount of junk items, but that has always been the case

it’s a good trade off, cloth clothing is quite expensive even when crafted (i just have to get the TP up and ask globally for armor, the first page is practically heavy/leather-only)
add plants all around the world for cloth materials, we can easily get ore from the world in 3 ways and leather is not used as much as cloth. (leather even drops 3X more then cloth…….got enough frustrating times because of that >_< )

There could be, but it’s probably not worth introducing at this point. Then again, for my best example, I’m still not all that sure how well that particular game’s economy is. The real estate is psychotic there. :P

Short answer kind of boils down to the path by which cloth enters the game. While it’s present as straight drops by some mobs, it also comes from salvaging items that the game’s economy would rather not see sold to vendors. Which, curiously enough, adds a gauge to the value of cloth gear on the trading post.

Not the overall best answer, and I’d really rather see harvest nodes, but GW2 wasn’t built that way, and it’d be a huge effort to change course.

Those “nodes” drop more mithril than anything else. There’s no specific cloth and leather nodes, yet they are a basic material.

Someone who needs wood or metal can go mine it, and go straight for the wood or metal, and the tier they want.

You go kill stuff around, and unless you leave character at certain levels and keep making new characters, you are limited to T5-T6 drops that may or may not drop when you salvage something.

While partially true, there are loot bags that are dropped by those nodes…..those generate the level of materials of the enemy, not the opener.

As easily as any player can farm material nodes in Blazeridge, you can farm enemies that drop loot bags and get the level specific cloth and leather. Another option is to farm the materials you think are so easy to get, sell them and buy the appropriate level loot bags on the TP (or the materials you need directly).

I will agree that the more acceptable solution to this might be some sort of demotion recipes for the forge (tho those would possibly have some serious immediate effects on TP prices, but would likely normalize to something stable).

No, you don’t. Nowhere near “as easily”, unless you think “easily” is “Kill ten thousand enemies” because those bags drop less than once every 10 enemies, and have leather and cloth less than once every 10 bags, so to get a measly stack of 100 that you get by mining 30 nodes or so, you’ll have to take part in genocide or two.

I can’t remember the last time a bandit bag dropped anything but freaking butter, chocolate and bananas for me.

At least with animals they drop leather salvageable stuff fairly often, but there’s no enemy in GW2 that will drop cloth more often like Kournan souldiers and Kaineng’s gangs did in GW1.

But that is beyond the point. Nodes are not RNG. Enemy drops are RNG.

You need 10 iron ingots and are out of cash? You go mine 8-10 iron nodes, and you got them, guaranteed. No RNG. You need 10 cotton bolts? Gods know how many enemies you will need to keep until you get enough for a single freaking bolt.

All you have to do is look at their prices on the trading post.

Anyone who looks at those numbers and things are fine is either blind, daft or selfish and wants things that way because they benefit them personally at the expense of players.

While it’s true you can’t mine/log cloth/leather off a map the way you can with, well metal and wood. I get them from salvaging items that are dropped. Sure nowhere near the quantity of wood or metal but it’s doable.

Well, remember that while jute, cotton and linen come from plants, wool (sheep and dolyaks), silk (worms) and gossamer (spiders) come from animals.

But they could make it so the harvesting tool has 150 uses instead 50, and that one would work for all of them. Shearing or cutting cocoons with a sickle would make sense. There’s better tools, but it’ll work.

And imagine people running around after sheep and dolyaks to sheer them.

Some other games included some kind of harvesting skill based on scraping up bodies. It’d be possible to turn slaughtered dolyaks, grubs, and spiders into “cloth nodes” for that require harvesting tools. It wouldn’t even necessarily have to make scrap, but a pre-scrap that tailors can make into scraps.
