ArenaNet just sent me an email that says:

Guild Wars 2 is a naturally social game that encourages casual cooperation among players, instead of rivalry. When players team up, organize, and pool their resources, amazing things can happen.

What game are they playing? I am in Orr and I groan every time I see other players… I mean bots. When people team up, the end result is the person with the best direct damage AoE abilities will get all the loot and everyone else worked just as hard for no reward. The end result is rerolling or soloing and avoiding others like the plague. I’ve even noticed this happens throughout the entire game, people who realise their direct damage AoE will get them incredible amounts of loot during defend events, it becomes incredibly difficult to qualify for loot and experience from a lot of mobs. Not to mention the competitiveness in the player market, the richest people are the ones exploiting everyone else through the trading post. This game has become, in many ways, more competitive than others in the genre.

I wish they would fix things like loot and experience tagging before they send out emails like this one.

‘tis actually true. I love playing with a few others but as soon as there’s half a dozend, I don’t fight the world anymore. Everything and anything dies in a glaring white energy field of overlapping AOE. I fight to reach mobs first so I can hit as much as possible at least once.

A lot of people don’t revive others during DE’s and boss fights because they risk losing Gold, and sometimes, even getting anything at all. Why don’t we get contribution points for reviving someone that is fighting the boss? Sometimes someone is standing next to you but won’t revive you or his rewards may be affected. :/

If I’m there and the boss doesn’t stand directly on you, then I’ll res you and still get a gold contribution.

Note: there is a difference between downed and dead. It’s more encouraging to res downed players, because it doesn’t take that long. If you’re dead, and in the middle of the fight… well that’s a different thing.

They need to change the rewards system so that people who rez, heal and support in other way’s will be rewarded just as much as the dps people.

You are supposed to be getting credit for reviving downed players, it’s strange that you’re not. (and I haven’t noticed that I’m not, but I haven’t worried about it too much) Just like, your chance of getting loot is supposed to have nothing to do with who hits the enemies first or hardest; they mention this all the time in videos and articles. I suppose someone with AoE is going to get more loot than non AoE people, but that’s about it … at least that’s how it should be working.

For the record, if I’m in an event and you get downed, I’ll always try to get you up if I can … and I would hope other people do the same! In my experience the revive mechanic, the xp sharing and the – I thought – the loot share have all encouraged more of a cooperative feel to the game.

It all depends on the player. I might be lucky, but I almost always see players that help up others if the situation allows it.

I hate the competition when grinding DE’s. Everything is AoE’d down withing half a second and often I don’t get the xp for normal mob kills…

Have you tried putting boons on these people who kill everything before you touch them?

I actually stopped buffing people. I play a ranger and I use traps as my only reliable AoE that can hit mobs before they are dead. I am relying on the first damage pulse to do all my damage because the mobs die before the second pulse usually, the rest of my condition damage is wasted because damage over time means nothing when the mob is only alive for a couple seconds. Buffing people with my stalker’s might roar or my warhorn only means I’m less likely to get loot because everyone else is doing even more damage. I consciously made the decision to stop buffing people because it helps them and hurts me. I will res them… after the mobs are dead – despite them usually being bots(they really don’t have to wait long).

With a few fixes to the loot and experience system (and maybe scaling mob health with player numbers) I’m sure the game could go back to a truly co-operative experience, but currently it’s very competitive.

Not giving credit for heals, buffs, CC, debuffs and only taking damage into consideration is a flaw I can’t understand they missed.

They did credit these in some of the Beta’s, so I’m guessing it glitched somewhere along the way and they’ll get back to fixing it. I don’t mind, really, because I’m not in a race to level 80 anyway, so if I get a little less xp than the next person – so what?

I killed the Claw of Jormag. I pew pewed with my bow, I dropped my healing circle, I dropped my little stone spirit guy and I rezzed some people around me. I still got gold reward for the event. The thing is, you have to find balance for the dynamic events. You can’t just heal people, you can’t just run around rezzing people. You have to do damage and throw in a little support. You’ll find it much more enjoyable if you do.

It’s also a competition to obtain resources (be it gold or dungeon tokens etc.) quickly through a means that will likely be nerfed or fixed later. If you do it now, you will be rewarded handsomely while others will simply be punished after it’s nerfed / fixed.

I had a sick feeling in my stomach when I came home last night. My friend on voice chat said this, “Dude, everyone’s sploitin’ TA now, come on!”

My first thought was: “Wait, I don’t even care about the TA tokens”
Which is first of all a glaring result of their poorly designed dungeon system.

My second thought was: “kitten, that’s a lot of gold though”
Which is a glaring result of their poorly designed end game reward system where gold is king.

My third thought was: “But I really don’t want to spend my precious few hours exploiting a dungeon… however, I know people like my friend will reap the rewards before it’s nerfed, so maybe I really should get in on it now…”
Which just left a freaking bad taste in my mouth about this game.

This is flat out wrong for how normal DE’s work. You have to do 5% of a mob’s HP in damage to “tag” it. This literally means only a maximum of 20 people can “tag” a mob (assuming each person does exactly 5%). So mechanically speaking, it’s flawed and is the very reason Orr is such a kitten show.

I believe the dragons work differently though (or at least I hope so).

I have it where people see me dead and run away from a large mob instead of helping me then I hear some kitten tell me in map chat to just waypoint and waste 1s or more even when its near by them or me.

Another thing that occurs is that I see a freshly dead or downed individual in the middle of nowhere and I go to res them they rally at a way point rather than get revived. Am I not worthy? What the kitten is with that?

It does seem they are now all for themselves. I never played an MMO in this mindset as a first priority, sure I’m competitive like the next guy, but I don’t let it tell me how I play a MMO. I see people in trouble or a big event going on, I go there to help regardless of the outcome.

I don’t exploit or look for ways to get things fast. Either it has to be a fair fight to get ahead for me or a challenge for me to get ahead.
