Does anyone else feel that the game has a really hard time deciding when someone is in combat or not?

I’m not going to lie, I’m lazy at times. There was this one skill point – when I was on thief -surrounded by mobs… so I shadowstepped into them, used the elite skill to summon to thieves which then attacked the mobs, used the heal skill to enter stealth and shadow stepped to the skill point.

Kinda just stood there, eventually the elite wore off or my help died, either way I was doing nothing and the mobs hadn’t chased me. I just stood at the skill point for about 5 mins wondering if the game was ever going to let me out of combat. Actually had to heal again and enter stealth, doing that apparently disrupted whatever aggro I had left so I could commune with that place of power.

There have been other instances where this occurred on my Ele where the mobs were dead and my conditions wore off, but I couldn’t change gear for about a min and a half cause the game still thought I was in combat.

Anyone else having these issues and if so please give examples, perhaps it’ll help Anet see if this needs adjusting, really hoping it’s not the way it’s meant to work forever as it stands.

So been having the issue still… does no one else really get this at all? Even took screenshots for you to look at – haven’t moved my character at all and over the course of several minutes of doing absolutely nothing (even the character does those stupid bored animations) I’m still in combat and unable to change gear or skills or use waypoints or anything…

It has now been roughly ten minutes (yes I assembled this whole post whilst waiting for the game to do something) since it started this time. Seriously – am I supposed to be able to play the game or is it mandatory to just keep dying since you won’t let me change my approach to situations?

Usually when this happens to me, it’s because there’s at least one other mob I have aggroed (that I did not realize was aggroed), but the mob cannot reach me (for whatever reason), but I’m close enough that it remains aggroed. Looking around for any nearby mobs and killing them too may help. It’s worked for me so far.

Yeah see… difference is I swam to that spot. I didn’t run out from the houses in those pictures that flame legion charr are occupying so if it’s barracuda aggroing me keeping me from doing anything it’s still something Anet needs to fix. (And considering those Barracuda then decided to attack an armorfish instead, doubt I kept aggro from them)

Furthermore, I used the healing skill which stealths my thief and thus eliminates sources of aggro… or it has in the past. The fact of the matter is you said you had to kill stuff to get out of such a situation yourself… I’m asking for people to discuss how often they run into this and what they have to do to fix it so Anet can do something about it. One person reporting it doesn’t fix it and if you all just ignore the fact the problem exists it won’t be any better months from now – then I have to listen to all the WoW kids make a big deal out of this one bug that at that point still hasn’t gotten fixed. Cause you know they need something else to complain about…

While I am on the topic of fish aggroing me after I make landfall though… here’s another pic you may enjoy. http://i47.tinypic.com/2qx271g.jpg

Could have something to do with Thieves Guild, as a necro a lot of the times my pets will keep me in combat, even when nothing is attacking me/them. It’s more like residual agro or something that doesn’t reset. I usually just log out/in to fix it.

What I don’t get about combat mode is why running is slower.

Can someone please explain to me why are we slower during combat mode than outside of combat? It drives me nuts.

Yeah the whole “slower in combat” thing drives me absolutely insane.

They couldn’t just have balanced/made the game around 1 base move speed? Really?

I mean we already have a slower move speed when strafing, it’s not like it would make kiting easier.

Mesmers have no passive move speed.
So in combat, we are the 1%.

Aside from the “pet” based aggro keeping you in combat mode…

Another big issue is seen on certain jumping puzzles and on the many krait towers around. Angering a mob, then going up or down to another section of the tower/puzzle that the mob can’t get to will often keep you in combat indefinitely. It seems there is an issue with Z-axis aggro handling.

Speaking of jumping puzzles and being in combat.

Ever get into combat as you’re about to jump and miss?

Seriously stupid.

Even after they die/disappear – we should keep aggro if we’re no where around? That’s something that needs attention because it’s not the way the game should work…

And for the record, hadn’t used thieves guild – and even if I had when you go underwater they disappear just like the Elemenatlist’s summoned elemenatals which don’t work underwater either.

I’m not a fan of the in combat speed being different, would love to be able to play the game at a faster pace. But they probably have the in combat speed nerfed because of the casual players who needs more time to use skills and stuff. I’m certain if Anet increased our base run speed to match outside combat they’d increase all the mobs’ combat movement speeds as well to balance it back out and then we’d only hear complaints about the people who feel there’s not enough time to make effective combat choices.

You make it so complicated to get a skill point. If you just drop shadow refuge and walk up to the skill point, they cant see you or hit you, and you will be in stealth for quite a long duration of time. Enough to actually get the point.

@Iron Wolf – The Guardian profession is for those looking for easy mode. And though you have a good point it requires me to adjust my skillbar and doesn’t solve the issue at hand which is the game tends to lock you ‘in combat’ even when you and anything that has aggro’d you at any point in time do absolutely nothing for extended periods of time.

I’ve had it happen a few times recently. Just log-out to character select and you’re back out of combat. I guess that option doesn’t work if you’re in WvW or a dungeon, cuz you’ll have troubles getting back.
