Heyho community!

I’m seeking for a new MMORPG.

I’ve spend many years of playing WoW.
Now I want to give GW2 a go – got HoT already.

But since there are just a few spells on most characters, except for Elementalist which can actually pull out a few -
1.) isn’t the PvP not kind of too predictable?
2.) isn’t the PvP not becoming dull rather quickly?
3.) what makes the PvP challenging/competitive?

I’m used to have a kittenload of spells, so this is fells kind of like a “lite” version of a PvP game to me.

  1. Besides that – Is it actually worth to play GW2 now? I heard so many cons of some people, like little to no players, laggy servers and so on..
I’m from Austria, Europe – which server is well populated? Currently I’m on Abaddon’s Mouth.

4.) How active is the community? How populated are the areas, bosses?

5.) Is it actually worth it to play GW2 for mainly PvP?

Any opinions, suggestion or pointing out stuff that I’ve missed about PvP would be very, very welcome!
Please – try to be as unbiased as possible!

  • Used to play either mainly as a Rogue/Warlock.
Affliction Warlock – basically Dots (in GW2 language it’s conditions if I’m not mistaken)
or Rogue – loved to strike from the shadows, play with people’s minds, make them think they can win, played a little with them, but eventually showing them who’s the real big boi here.

6.) So – which classes would fit me? Mesmer for the mind games, or is it the Rogue?
What about conditions/dots? Which class would go hand in hand with it?

Many thanks in advance!

Its not so much about how many spells you have, its about how you use them.

I cant answer pvp stuff, but as for the rest, this is a highly populated game. The server you choose is only related to your WvW team, the pve side uses megaserver layered technology to group people together based on a multitude of factors. You will always find players as a result.

As for laggy servers, that is subjective and i personally find gw2 the least laggy of the mmos i play, altho because you can have huge numbers of people on screen, you will get perforamnce issuez in places.

Oneiece of advice, do not boost straight to 80. You will not need it for pvp and for pve, it is better to learn the game the traditional way. This game is also a very different style and design philosophy from WoW, so try to approach it as a new gam as it is, not by what you are used to in WoW.

their is no SLI or CROSS FIRE support at all for this game unlike wow . this game is only in DX9A unsure about possable upgrades coming to this game is best played on auto settings or low settings . more so in boss fights you want your settings low as you can get them so you .do not lag your self out of the game or anything . all classes have very limited skill sets. you can change weapons and that will change your skills .but will, not give you any more skills at all .

pvp is not the same as wow pvp and you have no open world duals at all in this game . and their will never be any 2v2 or any thing like that but their is 5v5 ..

wvw is locked to servers that you pick . and if you want to move to a different sever for better wvw that can cost you 1000 gems and up if you move to a low end server it will cost you 500 gems .

being you are from Austria, Europe you only be playing on EU servers only .

their is NO Rogue in this game at all so your out of luck their . but you might like theft and you might not

mesmer is good for number of things including teleportation . and so forth .

but i say play all classes and do not try just one and you got a home instance that you can put farming nodes into that are also into the game as well

also too do not try to pick one class and play it all the time . that will take the fun out of this game for you fast and fully . so play all classes .

we do have a tp system in this game and you can do good on it for some things. but better off to level up your crafting classes and use them much as you can to save some cash on the tp pricings

How active is the community that is a mixed bag but their is still some good people in this game yet .

world bosses is where people get together for community stuff every day . their is raiding if you into that too

their is no phone apps for this game at all . and only a few apps that are ok to use with this game . like

you can watch this video and get the link in the video to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1-bsIGxAkE

also too another good add on is you can watch this video and get taco from down below the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNpcPTe6dFQ

the game has its own dps meter not sure but think their is only maybe 1 or 2 of them you can use only for this game at the very best .

also too with launch buddy you can use it to get the best servers with the most lowest ping rates at that time .

their is only about 3 events in this whole game year round . the biggest one is halloween

if you are not already found this out yet . you need to buy bank tabs with gems and other acount upgrades with gems as well that you can buy from the trading post its self . or if they got a walmart or gamestop in the UK . they might have gems cards their you can buy and use for game upgrades . otherwise you might find yourself having to buy your gems from the trading post .

and as some one pointed out for good reason do not play this game like you would wow at all .

as its not the same as wow is and so forth . and all this is coming from some one who plays both wow and this game as well .

oh btw their is a new pack to also soon come out . be looking to that for new information in regards to possable maybe game spec upgrades MAYBE .

also too if you not seen them yet the best streamer of this game is called wooden potatoes . he is a ok peep from your country but gives hell of a good game info and so forth .

https://www.youtube.com/user/WoodenPotatoes

WELCOME to the game and hope you have a lot of FUN . and enjoy yourself fully

no new system upgrades coming

Just a side note: WoodenPotatoes is not from Austria, and Austria is not, of course, in the UK.

For PvP information, you might consider perusing, or posting in, the PvP sub-forum. For large-scale PvP, check out the WvW sub-forum.

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.

In my opinion,

1.) isn’t the PvP not kind of too predictable?
A: There is enough build diversity in this game, but PVP kinda predictable due to meta. For example, when you see Guardian, you can be kitten well sure they’re using some kind of trap build.

2.) isn’t the PvP not becoming dull rather quickly?
A: Differ from person to person, for me 5v5 PvP kinda dull, but the war between 3 servers is endlessly fun.

3.) what makes the PvP challenging/competitive?
A: For WvW its about working in a team, or organize what u can with what u got when outnumbered. Lately i feel WvW is always crowded so that makes it challenging, and competitive. Arena style PvP is just like DOTA where u earn rank thingy based on ur record, and u can show the badge for bragging rights. And you cant really outstats someone, when you win, you win it with ur build and better playing skill.

4.) How active is the community? How populated are the areas, bosses?
A: Very active. There will always be people doing all kind of content everywhere, especially if you use the LFG tools.

5.) Is it actually worth it to play GW2 for mainly PvP?
A: Many people play only for PvP, worth or not i cant say. You can use DoT build on any class here, so u can scratch ur Affliction Warlock itch for sure. Rogue here is Thief, and thief got access to Stealth and toying around with people in PvP or WvW, mind games and keep people guessing.

6.) So – which classes would fit me? Mesmer for the mind games, or is it the Rogue?
What about conditions/dots? Which class would go hand in hand with it?
A: Dunno, mesmer can be mesmerizing, and Thief got cool armor and style. All class can main condi just fine.

1.) isn’t the PvP not kind of too predictable?
1) The ‘lite’ version makes the choices matter. You will have moments where yuou change things due to past experiences and face another group and you’ll feel pretty unhappy due to the spell you needed now not being on your bar… and the replacement only having limited uses versus the new group you’re fighting.

2.) isn’t the PvP not becoming dull rather quickly?
2) I have no real clue I sometimes do PvP I tend to be more engaged in WvW so The PvP is only a side thing for me. WvW being a open PvP instance with 100’s of players from 3 groups fighting eachother. The 3 groups are server related.

3.) what makes the PvP challenging/competitive?
3) The fact there’s a myraid of build ranging from oneshotters with 20s CD’s to sustained pressure builds, supports, invulnarability setups and more. Ranges can matter a lot as well.. (1500 vs 1200 vs 900 vs melee range(180-240) The simple 3 point things tend to be the main balancing thing. Condi is pretty powerfull in a lot of cases, but I tend to be demolished by spike power builds on condi and on power builds the other way around. (shows my skill in PvP)

4.) How active is the community? How populated are the areas, bosses?
4) The community is active, you’ll notice more ppl playing during afternoon/evening/ weekends (more instances) But if I want to do raids/fractals/ world bosses in the middle of the night I will find groups of people as well.

5.) Is it actually worth it to play GW2 for mainly PvP?
5) Considering WvW as a PvP mode as well: I guess so.

6.) So – which classes would fit me? Mesmer for the mind games, or is it the Rogue?
What about conditions/dots? Which class would go hand in hand with it?
Condition builds: thief, trapper ranger, PU mesmer, Warrior can do okay condi’s, Elementalist, well most buyilds can , some have little variety in their conditions (Guradians are mostly fire) Some can excell like necro…

  1. Besides that – Is it actually worth to play GW2 now? I heard so many cons of some people, like little to no players, laggy servers and so on..
I’m from Austria, Europe – which server is well populated? Currently I’m on Abaddon’s Mouth.

This game will see a new influx soom with the second expansion hitting soon and the new builds which will appear from it. Servers do not matter you’ll fight all ppl in Europe in PvP, and select servers in WvW.

There are german servers and international servers. The language can make a difference…. Other then this I have been playing with a lot of nationalities on international servers, including ppl from Oceania, The Middle East, Aziatic states, Africa ,West and East Europe and more… It tends to be very interestingand language barriers are mostly absent. I have no clue about the present state of German servers….
I see a lot of people starting GW2 still and I think the community is alive, open and social. (PvP can be a bit salty and flamy now and then, but weed out the idiots and you will end up with a good game.)

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Cant say anything for the PvP questions as I tend to avoid PvP personally…

However regarding your class questions…

Thief is going to be your closest counterpart to the Rogue. They can do stealth, poisons, and just about everything you’d expect from a rogue class. They can be tricky to play though with their Initiative resource management.

The mesmer can actually do quite a few different things… you could go the mind games route with clone spam, it can be quite fun but rather tedious as well… you can build them for stealth as well and essentially become a magic rogue, which cqn be quite fun at times… you can also build them for condition damage, primarily using Confusion and Torment as your conditions.

The Necromancer would be a good class to build for Condition if your looking for something that has a similar feel as a Warlock.

Please stop assuming I’m a guy… I am female.

HI there, I won’t put much into this because I don’t know it’s value.

Gw2 for an mmo has actually pretty good pvp, I think though like any other game it’s so easy to get caught up in the opinions of the vocal minority.

DW about servers, just play the game because it is extremely forgiving, if you played on a f2p account first before upgrading then you can change servers once for free when you find a solid guild. Unlike in wow, if you bump into issues and frustrations the support team are extremely generous and helpful.

With consideration to skills, I get that it’s sorta weird not having lots of skills on hand to use, however you will not miss having them. Just give it a solid go and make up your own opinion on it.

I’ve never played wow, but i mainly play spvp in gw2, and currently hovering at the very bottom of the top 250 eu.

Pvp wise, gw2 has 2 main gamemode : wvw (large scale server vs server vs server persistent siege battle) and spvp (5v5 arena). I’ll mostly talk about spvp.
I don’t feel that the ‘lack’ of skills make the game predictable, of course, trying to read your opponent and counter his moves is crucial. Using the environement to your advantage, fake casting your skills (skill cancel) to bait your opponents defenses, interupting key skills, setting up and executing your burst while avoiding the enemy’s burst… There’s a really lot going on in a fight.
And fighting really is just one half of the appeal of spvp. That’s something that you may or may not enjoy, but there is quite a decent amount of tactics in how you and your team move around the map. There will be a lot of movement and decision making in order to engage advantageous fights, disengage fights that are not ‘worth it’, outnumbering fights, creating teamfights or spreading the fights to contest all 3 nodes… Map rotations are a huge part of spvp, especially if you get yourself an organized team of 5 and start playing in tournaments.

Spvp will require a lot of mechanical skill, fast reflexes, decision making, team coordination and awareness.

On the competitive side, we have a proper league system, with a solo/duo queue, with divisions, mmr, leaderboard. And then, for your organized team need, there’s 3 daily automated tournaments acting like qualifiers for the monthly tournament that gives the most prestigious rewards. There’s also some community founded tournaments.

If you enjoy warlocks archetypes and dots, you should check necromancer. They are the main damage dealer/bunker killer in the current meta, but they have very little active defense and need to be babysited by a support most of the time.
Thieves brings massive spike damage, are pretty squishy but have insane mobility, their role is usually to outnumber fights/decap the enemy nodes.
Then, you have revenant which is somewhere between the two.

I’ve played WoW since Wrath and as you probably know WoW has been hard on the “ability pruning” train since Cata. Today, the BM hunter in WoW has, what, 5 buttons to press outside of the niche abilities? This is all part of a general trend in games to make things more comprehensible to more players and for the most part affects both builds and abilities.

I don’t really find GW2 deficient or comparatively boring in this regard as compared to WoW. For me, I’ve stopped playing the current content in GW2 due to the plaformer-puzzle nature of the game in its current conception. I’m waiting for the new expansion announcement and if it doesn’t require platforming skills or puzzles in the core game I will be returning.
