I really wish there was some kind of warning about this change. I have 5 of them sitting in my bank as prizes for the ExtraLife Event coming up this fall. None of which can be given to anyone now. So not only did I promise something I can not deliver now but I’m stuck with 5 books that I can not use. I am left with 1 simple question.
Why? Why was this change necessary?

What a completely pointless change….
I don’t like this very much. By making it soulbound it served as a gold sink and to prevent people from trivially putting it on every uplevel they have. Now every fool, including myself, will consider getting one just for lulz.
The only way to resolve this is to add speciality tags which have a gold value + some other unlock ability.
Failing this, redundant ones should be reassigned to have a vendor value of 100g to be sold back.

You still need 1 Commander’s Compendium per character you want the commander tag on. The change just made it so Guild Leaders can’t give players within their guild a Commander’s Compendium when they have proven their leadership ability. You can pass it between your own characters but you can’t pass it to another player.
My dilemma came from the fact I was trying to reward people on my server for leadership and stocked up on a few for prizes. Now that this change ninjaed on me I’m stuck with 5 books and nobody to use them on. I can’t give them to anyone, I can’t sell them, and i already have a book on all my characters that need them.
Oh, I read it wrong. That’s a pointless change! I thought it meant 1 book for 1 account.
Then it would be a good idea to at least be able to sell it back to the vendor and recover the lost gold.
If you were planning on selling them then why hold on to them? If you promised one to someone why didn’t you mail it when you made the promise? Why by 5 in the first place? If I had 500 gold laying around I certainly wouldn’t buy 5 of these.
As for the change, probably the old “must do content to get reward” mantra even though BoH drops (or dropped, do they still drop) from achievement chests.
This was a needed change. I have the account max for character slots. Now, I have a feasible reason for buying one.

Did you read what I wrote? They are Prizes for a charity event that takes place this Fall, the ExtraLife Charity Event. I was holding onto them for that event.

You will need 1 book per character…. This doesn’t mean you buy 1 and get a commander tag for all your characters.
All I need is for it to be account bound. Passing it around is just fine, since I carry a permanent bank contract with me, it’s easy to use it on which ever character I’m playing at the time.
…..unless the actual consumable is the only thing that has changed. Then I have to say WTF Anet!
It’s a consumable to enable the tag. Consume it to enable the commander ability. Once you use it on one character it’s gone.
The only thing this change affects is players can no longer give other players a commander’s compendium.

If they were for some event occurring in the future then why buy them with such a lead time? You couldn’t remember to save 500g and 1250 BoH and not spend them until the event was over?
This does not make the commander tag account bound. It is only the consumable that you buy that is now account bound, thus fixing/addressing an issue that nobody ever really had or cared about and in turn probably caused a lot of needless confusion, wherein I see multiple posts already from people who think the tag is now account-wide.
It’s not.

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time, that seemed to be an okay thing to do.
If the change was instead to increase the book to 300g and OP could no longer afford that would you have criticized the poster for not buying them in advance? Plus it’s an issue of trust. There’s no guarantee people will intentionally or unintentionally spend the gold and not have 500g lying around— with 5 books lying around he can’t do anything else with them for the most part.
He certainly didn’t expect the game to suddenly change the rules on such an issue when nobody asked for it.
Should we not store anything in our bags or inventory in the fear that it may randomly become account bound some day?
In any case, it’s why I propose the things be vendorable. The badges will be gone forever, but at least the trouble from these fringe incidents can be mitigated a bit

No, this goes back to commander resentment. It use to be anybody with 100g could wear the taco and insist players follow them. Then it was changes to 100g and 250 BoH so you actually had to play, in theory, WvW to earn one. Changing it to account bound sort of forces that issue.
Now the OP was planning on rewarding random players a commander’s tag. That’s like the military promoting random strangers to General for winning a raffle IMO. Didn’t have a more suitable reward that was both prize worthy and pricey other than mailing them gold and deal with the gold police.
The BoH from achievement chests mitigate the need to play wvw, so kinda a moot point.

That’s why I said in theory. Is that still happening BTW, the BoH drops. Kind of upset that I don’t get random PvP armor pieces anymore to full in my wardrobe.

According to OP
My dilemma came from the fact I was trying to reward people on my server for leadership and stocked up on a few for prizes.
So it wasn’t “random people”. Sending them gold would not guarantee they would use it on a tag.
In any case, it’s just a blue icon in a video game with some organizational features. Technically every PC is a pact leader, but you know. And furthermore, tags can be useful in pve too.

OP contact support. They SHOULD help you since honestly in your case that is so unfair of the change to affect you life that.

They do not. At least, I didn’t get anything in any way PvP/WvW-related, at all. The Chests aren’t really appealing, anymore.
So it now does play to the “do specific content to get specific award” song.

Because anet doesn’t let us know about these things ahead of time causing such a problem. Suppose they did wait till just before only to find out that Anet decided to increase the price per tag, tack on another requirement, or simply limit the amount one person could buy for no reason.
We’d be having the same discussion we are right now except the question you’d be asking is “why they didn’t buy them when they knew they could afford them?”

OR
Could it be that what is happening now is a bug, where the commander book itself indeed should have been account bound ?
if not, then the change is really unnecessary. all it does is allowing you to transfer the commander tag to another character, which some people may like it, while others feel meh….

They still do. They just go directly into your wallet. Regular ones have 100, large have 200, and heavy have 300.
Commander’s Compendium , will all toons get a tag if you have one now? Or does account bond mean the book is still for one toon, but you can’t sell the item?
I think it’s you can’t sell but for one toon, but a lot of my guild members insist it means all toons will get it, so I want to confirm!
Thanks
As of Sept 9th, all your characters will get access to the tag if one has it.

Do they! Well, that’s nice to know. I’m afraid I hadn’t noticed. Thanks for the info.
I think because of the Wallet it’s “invisible” now. Use to have to drag them into the bank.
