I have a commander title as i play WvWvW alot. But sometimes i need to make some gold because WvWvW is not cheap. So i jump in the PVE events and sometimes i have my commander title on. Not to show of but when we have guildies that not know where the event is. Its just simple for them to look for the commander title. Also for random people to.

Now the problem is. The moment i put my title on. You get messages from other players that i NEED to play WvWvW and need to get out of the PVE content or that i m just showing my e-kitten. This is can handle and i just simple ignore them but yesterday i had a complete guild telling me that i NEED to do WvWvW as people there need me (While on TeamSpeak chatting to other commanders that they don’t need me at all.). Still not a big problem. But all of the sudden doring the event i got kicked out of the game because my name was inappropriate (using that name the moment gw2 launched).
Well now its start to get a problem. Because everybody know coming up with a name is the hardest part of the game.

But my question to the community is. What do you feel when you see a commander in PVE?

hey a guy or girl put 100 gold into a title and a blue marker on the map. Then I move along. I might be some weird minority, but hey achievements are achievements. I will never tell someone i don’t know how they should play (unless they are asking for advice, but that’s a different story).

It’s when there are 5+ sitting around in lions arch they start to clog the mini map and get annoying.

if the commander runs events in ORR i am fine with his Icon. Better for all.

If he just has it on for showoff i usually send them a tell and ask them if they have no friends or anything that gives them the feeling of getting respect in real life….

but sadly some of the commander TAG wearing players are really poor creatures that only seem to get the feeling of being someone important in a computer game which they play 18 hours a day ignoring school, job, friends and family…..

I think three things.

Why is that person a Commander? Ego, wants that icon on the map, wants to give the impression that he/she is a better player, etc?

I really hope that icon person doesn’t get bossy in an Event. It has happened to me and I think why the kitten gives that person to say “I am a commander shut up and do what I say”?

What a waste of gold.

I never really send any messages to commanders in particular. I don’t really WvWvW and mainly pve.
Couple of times seen a commander lead an event. The guy had obviously done it a dozen times before and gave general directions to people what to focus on and when, after failing the event the first time without directions given. Event went a lot smoother then.

I’ve also ran into commanders however who just ran along with events while the group failed a dozen times. Which makes me facepalm.

If you decide to show the tag in pve, at least be familiar with the event you’re running, and give directions if the event keeps failing :/

tl;dr: if you’re showing you’re a commander, act like one and give directions in pve if necessary. If no commander is necessary, don’t show off the tag.

A simple solution would be to make the commander icon visible in PvE only to people representing the same guild. Considering players can join multiple guilds in GW2, it would make it easy for those interested to ask in map chat, join, get the icon displayed, do the events, and then leave. They could also limit their chat to the guild channel.

I have to say I’m getting a bit fed up of commanders who treat maps and map chat as their personal playground, and assume that everyone in the map must be following their highly enlightened (sarcasm) lead.

Between that and 6 or 7 commanders just idling in Lion’s Arch, I don’t know what’s worse. If there was an option to disable all commander icons in PvE, I wouldn’t think twice.

It’s ridiculous that even people on my block list show up on my map just because they spent 100g to have a blue peni… er, icon above their head.

I am not bothered by commanders in PvE except when they afk on a waypoint and the icon makes it impossible to use the waypoint. When that happens I ask them nicely to please move to the side of the waypoint. Mostly they do it, sometimes not.

Well that will be bad. Because in WvWvW you kinda need a commander and not everyone will be in your guild.

The part i don’t get is why commanders do get so much hate. The only difference between them and normal players is the blue icon.

The best solution would be i guess to have an option to turn of commander icons for yourself. Because when i join an event lets say a dragon event. I alway’s see some players ask where it is. I just simple put my Commander title on so they have a beacon on the map where to go to.

But your solution would be that only players of the guild could see your commander title. And my response was that it would hurt the WvWvW alot. And i know the title says PVE because i made it. But the point is that it will make commander title useless if you play wvwvw of pve. Because even in PVE it could be usefull

I don’t mind people wearing titles.
I wouldn’t mind if someone would actually wear a title like “the only true god”, as long as he keeps his divinity to himself or whomever believes in him.

That title states you paid 100 gold, which means that at some point you had 100 gold. In order to get 100 gold, you play more than me, and probably better than me. I usually try to watch and learn.

However, if someone starts bossing me around, simply because he feels he’s the leader without being asked or in a rude manner, then my real life military experience kicks in, and even there, you had to prove yourself for me to follow you.
If that happens, I’ll start pulling more enemies to the event, and see how this leader can really lead.

Also i would like the option to turn off certain commanders in wvw as well tbh.

As there is one or two commanders in wvw that don’t have a clue,as causes ppl to get confused, also takes away the resources from the better commanders.
money should not buy the commander title tbh,it has to be earned.

Anyway commander icons in pve should not be there imo.

What do I think? When anyone in my guild sees one of the icons they always keyup and say the same thing … we’re safe now there goes a commander. Why? Jealousy? Snarky to be snarky? Nope. I would say that 95% of the people sporting the icon are as clueless as any I have ever run into in any video game in 20 years of gaming.

Ever see a train of NPCs running at you and then see it is a commander bringing them? We have. Ever see someone calling out orders for people to stack on them while doing the Jormag event and see he is standing on the hill attacking while the NPCS die on the ice pillars? We have. There are countless examples … enough that I would never want the icon associated with my own name.

The whole commander system needs a serious revamp and this is coming from someone who is one.
For PvE and Guild events it’s invaluable. Trying to arrange multiple teams for the same thing and to go the same place without it is just silly.
It’s also a great tool so that people can see where the event is taking place (i’m using mine for the all mesmer events on a friday) and also so that a fair number of players can have a private conversation without needing to use say or whisper.

However.. I fail to see why every player can’t form larger teams, create a custom chat channel etc. Not only that, I cant see where each player is in relation to me. There’s no easy and visual way to see who has joined my squad and no way to make team leaders so I can sub-divide my squad. If it’s supposed to mimic a raid mechanic it fails miserably.

Just go about your day, let the haters hate.
Just explain to the person I use it so guild member’s can find me during events.

Anet should add an option to the Commander tag. Toggle either guild, party, or all.
Then the player has options, when doing PvE events with his guild he can have it set to guild. This way a simple blue icon can not get you bullied for using it.

It is rather said that some can’t control themselves, so they feel a need to PM a person and belittle them over a silly blue icon.

The simplest solution would be to give all players the option to turn off viewing the icon.

As for the whispers, I don’t know the people’s motivation but I know on my server commanders and others ask in PvE map chat for us to jump into WvW at times when needed. However apparently they are not all agreed on whether or not this is a good idea because some of the WvW commanders in WvW obviously only want their guild or allied guilds there and insult everyone else.

On the other hand, there are some good commanders in WvW that give clear instructions and use their new recruits to their advantage wisely. I wish there was a way to see which commanders are in WvW easily before you go in and I would time it so I was in only when certain commanders were there.

I realize that people are individuals and some are unpleasant and rather incompetent at leading while others are skilled. Some people will lump all commanders into one group and decide the worst of the group is what everyone is. Only you and those close to you know which of the categories you fall into.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

What do we think of “Commanders” in PvE… this is one astronomically huge can of worms to offer an opener to. But since you asked…

“Daddy? Can I borrow your credit card please?**”…“sure son.. don’t go spending too much on that game.” The ** denotes an optional sign of politeness. From there it just goes downhill.

100g in-game later… oh boy… the King-kitten syndrome really kicked in, and the Dev’s will thank you so much for contributing to their slushfund.

Meanwhile, the blue-dot attitude starts to evolve. People wrongly look up at you for advice and guidance in a game that is only in it’s infancy. I’m not going to drop names here, but I have seen commanders trolling anything from Dynamic Events in Orr (ie. sniping bosses that are the subject of said D/E’s), to deliberately misdirecting people as to where to stand for the 10pts “Find the wrong place to stand” achievement while the Claw of Jormag is active. All because they have the small-man complex and hardly ever see the light of day from being stuck in the basement for too long.

My question is, why did ANet, in all their wisdom, think that the Commander title was such a good idea? Any idiot can splurge 100g on a blue dot that gives them false powers and an attitude that only a Norn could beat out of them.

The right to lead should be earned not bought.

That’s the voice of maturity right there, and my hat goes off to you sir.

The problem is that ANet designed the Commander title in the same manner that they designed Legendaries. In the belief that it would take a rather long time to achieve and that the end result would be so much worth the effort. But.. then they veto’d this by making real money transfers able to buy gems and then transfer across to in-game gold, which completely nullified the idea of a title that people would look up to and one that someone who held would respect. I’ve seen some massive game developer brainfarts in my time but this is a corker.

The solution to this is rather simple. I’m guessing maybe 3-5% of commanders would have actually made 100g legitimately – I say legit in the terms of not playing the TP and actually earning 100g for the title they felt the need to wear. In the same manner that this title should have taken a long time to earn, I feel that commanders who wish to put up their blue dots be subjected to a test of sorts… one that can prove honesty & true leadership so they can wear the title with honour and have respect earned, not given/demanded. The dev’s half-baked this idea, I suggest they throw it back into the oven and flesh something out for some proper results to come of it. Because like I said earlier, it only takes someone with some money and a penchant for troll-mindedness to make a ‘commander’… admittedly some are good, but I’ve seen a whole bunch who aren’t.

From a purely ethical standpoint… those who deliberately go out of their way to abuse the title for the sake of nothing but their own amusement should be reported and stripped of their title on top of a minimum 72-hour ban. If it’s good enough for them to abuse such a title, then it’s good enough for them to lose it. “No refunds”. In the end, the sad fact is that ANet is the enabler for such idiocy to occur, and it will take a rather long time for me to have a good deal of faith put back into commanders, especially in PvE.

Hmm, in my server after the day I got my commander title a bunch of guilds transferred to our server (Blackgate) upon wvwvw with them a bit I understand how they operate usually with focus on being guild run only zergs (which i understand is the best) and when they do have it on they are indeed more experienced than me so even though I have commander I barely use it for wvwvw. I am aiming towards that more of hey there a bunch of us here, group up and we can actually do damage instead of just hopping around. Now in Pve i used my title mostly to show people that events are running. For instance if grenth is starting then I turn it on until I think a nice group has arrived. This would probably get me some flame on. Unlike the greater majority of the population (don’t know why) failing events is actually the most optimum way to farm instead of completing it and waiting for 2 hours. Yes, I even know how to make certain events fail. But I at least give them the chance to finish it. I just don’t tell them a few things, sorry but by then I usually turn it off since I believe we already got enough people (you can 2 men grenth I done it):/ but I need gold lol. Btw sometimes I forget to turn it off and that is my bad.

I have plenty other stuff to show off if I really wanted to.

It’s completely understandable for people to get annoyed with you if you’re displaying your commander title in PvE environments (especially during events) because your icon is displaying on their minimap and obscuring other important icons they may be trying to locate. Example: a cog icon showing an item they’re supposed to defend, a shield icon showing an NPC they’re supposed to defend, a flag icon showing a point they’re supposed to defend, a crossed-sword icon showing an important NPC they’re supposed to intercept, a skull icon showing a boss they’re supposed to kill, etc. Then, outside of events, you have waypoints, tradeposts, merchants, etc.. all icons your commander icon can obscure.

Why not just turn off your icon and not cause grief to others, and thus spare yourself the annoyed whispers?

Frankly, I think it should only display in WvW and nowhere else.

Two solutions:

1) Allow the commander icon to have filters aka Only show to Party, Only show to Guild, Only show to everyone within /say range, Show to all, Show only in WvW, etc. This would solve the hassle to turn off and on the icon and also be better for people when you forget you have it on.

2) Prestige. You can keep it at 100g. But make it so the vendor/whoever you talk to won’t let you buy it until you are a Dungeon Master and Been there, Done That player. You could probably add killing all Dragons and doing all Temples as well to the title. At least in my view, if you could do all of that, you probably have had enough experience to do a decent job.

But imo I’m okay with commanders, if what they say makes sense, I listen, if not; I ignore it. I barely pay attention to the blue icon, even if there are like 5 on my mini-map—idk why it bothers people so much, but to each his own.

What goes through my head when I see a commander:

In WvW: Yay a commander hopefully we’ll have a better chance, or there will at least be more people around to fight/chat/zerg. I can listen to their tactics, and discussions with other commanders or players, and possibly learn something. Hopefully they’ll have a good idea of where to head next because I don’t really have a clue (since I don’t play wvw that often)

In PvE: You are not a commander, I am a commander, my personal story says so. I don’t want to see your blue icon, I don’t care that you’re a commander right now. In PvE we are all players in the world, a commander title means nothing here. It’s not even a little icon, it’s huge and it’s size makes it appear more important than event markers……

In PvE it should be made into a small icon that goes next to your name like the World completion star. It shouldn’t be visible to everyone, and I there ought to be a new way to find members in your guild on the map, such as you right click and it shows you their exact location on the map so you can find them.

Guild wars 2 uses the carrot on the stick event system in PVE. Theres no reason to have a commander tag in PVE. The game events circle the area of the event, and in many cases have NPCs that you are supposed to follow not a commander. I find the OP appalling to think that making a thread on the forum about how he/she is helping and people are being disrespectful to them when A. There help is not needed and B. nobody asked for it. Turn your commander tag off in PVE, people have done these events hundreds of times and in many cases know more about them than you do your icon is obnoxious wasting real estate on everyone screen.

if the commander runs events in ORR i am fine with his Icon.

How exactly do you know he/she "has it on for showoff "? I find this comment from you rather presumptious and then the following actions you take to abuse the player rather rude. If I got such a message from you I would have no hesitation in using the report button.

Personally yet I do not have a commander’s title but I do plan to get one for the sole use of using in PVE and not in WvW at all. Why do I plan to use in PVE and not WvW?

Well:

Usually when I go to WvW I see plenty of commanders and by the time I have the title I except there to be a lot more in WvW. Also my WvW playstyle would not cater to the vast majority of those in WvW. That is I am not a big fan of zerging everything in sight. I prefer to play things in a stratedgy type of way. I would take something and then direct players to help build it up and defend it etc.

As for PVE I would have my title on the char I use the most in PVE when I am playing the game ’having fun". That is going back to lower lvl areas to farm fine mats I need and to do events etc. The reason for having the title would be so that if anyong in my area needs a Res or help with a vet or something they could see my icon and perhaps ask for a hand. I actually LIKE helping people out and think that this icon display in PVE is one way of advertising that fact.

What do I think of other commanders when I see them in PVE? I usually think they must be running events or clearing maps/events etc with their guilds so I think nothing of it. People like you who find reasons to hate on others or get jealous of them for whatever reason in games like this really need to get over themselves and their own insecurities, really it’s true lol…

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I’m actually more interested as to what name you were using that was ‘inappropriate’. Your forum name is in no way offensive, because besides popular belief, Lucifer is a common name an many countries, and flagging it as offensive would be an act of discrimination. I would seriously put in a complaint about that.

Theres no reason to have a commander tag in PVE. The game events circle the area of the event, and in many cases have NPCs that you are supposed to follow not a commander.

I beg to differ. For one thing, the circle of the events are not visible at infinite range, they only show up when you get close to said event. In my experience having a commander present attracts other players to the event. I don’t think anyone particularly cares what those commanders have to say, they just know that is where the people are.

If you can get past being jealous, the commander tags are quite beneficial.

There’s no telling about what names get reported. I had a friend whose main was named for an Irish village, and was forced to change it. Rather than look at the actual name, they take the report itself as evidence the name’s offensive.

I do know that even game companies have to be careful of what they do that may be considered ‘discrimination’ over the internet. I remember a few times where some of the games I played had to issue apologizes for it.
