Dear Chris Whiteside,

I am in complete agreement with what many people have suggested on this thread regarding the huge gaming changes made on September 9th: That the “new player experience”, level-gating, etc. should be left for players who have only just started the game for the first time, and leave it off or optional for those of us who have gotten farther in the game. I have two level 80s right now but enjoy making alts of different classes. Now I, quite frankly, fear creating a new character or playing the ones I have who are all under level 20. Sometimes I like to mix up my GW2 routine and work on alts and other classes, but now I don’t want to because I know of the heavy, stifling restrictions made on characters 1-20/30/40. I fear this patch will make you lose veteran players and not bring in as many new players as you wish. So I ask you, please take our complaints into consideration and find a compromise. The threads complaining about the changes are still alive and well into the second day of the patch. Surely this tells ANet something…

While I really think a CDI about guilds would be very usefull, I just think it wouldn’t be very usefull to discuss guild related things at this time.
The forum is flooded with (healthy and constructive)discussions/raging/complaining etc. about the latest feature patch. That’s what is moving the forum right now.

I think it would be best if someone of the development team, doesn’t necessarily has to be Chris, would first open some kind of CDI regarding the latest feature patch.

I would really like to see improvents on guilds, don’t get me wrong, I just think we won’t get 100% out if it while the majority of the forum is moved by another thing.

Many others and myself are reading the other threads. i think its best to hear all the comments and give folks more time to play with their alts before discussing so……

….once i get my doc finished then let’s begin the CDI.

Chris

Sounds good. Will the CDI still be covering guilds as planned? Or will the topic be switched to discuss the new changes to the leveling system?

It will be about guilds.

Chris

Wait what? I’m saddened to hear this. I thought we were going to discuss the one big thing that is bothering the community right now. The new levelling system.

I didn’t mean the level experience, I was talking about everything the feature patch delivered. There is a lot of discussion going on about the Trading Post as well…
I agree about that before we start a discussion about the leveling changes, people should be given more time with their alts.

But then again, it’s your CDI, not mine haha:)

I would very much like it if this new system for beginner players was made optional for beginner players only, as this is extremely frustrating for veteran players and altaholics. This could be done by either making this system only kick in on accounts who have no lvl 80 character yet or by adding a toggle in the options menu.

Thanks for listening.

This is the perfect solution and one I’m surprised hasn’t been implemented in other parts of the game.

Chris,

What day and time are you considering? I live in Pacific time, west coast of the US.

I am continuing to read threads today, and I see that some are talking about some misconceptions about the leveling and restrictions, but it still sounds like it takes until level 10 to unlock a certain number of weapon skill slots, and downed skills, and underwater skills. If these are still true, I don’t need to play to let you know that I am quite upset by this. I enjoyed leveling up weapon skills by merely killing enemies, and being able to fight underwater and do anything I wanted (well, obviously some things are best at higher levels, naturally!) from day one. Now i have to trudge through, it sounds like, and have everything, even Personal Story, delayed beyond what patience will allow.

Hi,

I am planning on starting an alt again when i get some time. Why don’t we play together as I would like to experience it with you and hear your feedback.

Chris

I made an alt today to try out the new system. I really feel having the weapon skills level locked are over kill. Having to get to level 23 to have all weapon skills unlocked including underwater skills is just crazy. I do not under stand the thinking behind the need to level lock weapon skills. With the way the level system is now, with the removal or enamy’s that cause conditions or skills that should/need to be dodged removed from the lower levels, it is a mindless task to level. The game play felt flat. Target, press 1, wait for target to die, repeat. I love leveling my alts, and have quite a few.

I’ve played GW2 since head start. And only have 2 level 80’s as I tend to play my main the most. And trying the leveling system at diffrent levels has been interesting. The rewards have been odd though. For instance, I levelled my ranger from 50-60, and I had gear with diffrent stats and ruins each time I had gear as a reward. I found this odd as it would mean that I would not use my reward if it was not a stat I wanted or would not work with my build, same with the ruins. It wouldn’t be so bad if I could salvage them but I can’t even do that. I’ve not had a chance to have a look at my other 4 alts that are between levels 21-39, dew to RL. But so far the rewards do not feel rewarding, and if anything the level locking of things kills the thrill of combat at lower levels. I feel that if weapon skills where brought back to how they originally worked leveling would not be taking the beating it currently is.

Sorry for rambling, it’s late here in the U.K.

yes because as arin state this is something game designers need to keep in mind. if they would have left mobs with condis and dodgeable abilites it would give new comers actualy accomplishment feelings.
it´s literaly soemthign that should have been done: turning all starter zones into presearing ascalon. that was a good tutorial, we learned everythign we needed for later adventures and that they can occure in different situations. and if you are really good at it you can evne reahc max level there.

While I think a great many players also agree, the CDI for guilds was talked about before the patch. I Feel that continuing on with the much anticipated CDI is very important, not only for the players, but for the devs as well. While these issues with the feature are important and a hot topic right now, anything they say on the matter is only going to get them tarred and feathered with the current mood of the forums. They are reading, and taking note of whats being said, and will adress it when appropiate. I don’t think jumping into the midst of a restless mob is going to calm down anyone. The moment a red post pops up in any of those threads is going to be like blood in the water for the sharks.

Let the guild CDI go on as planned, and let everyone calm down a bit and breath.

So the question now is the current environment conducive to starting a CDI or should I wait a few days?

Chris

I think it depends on the topic. A CDI on guilds seems a bit superficial right now, when the major concern of the community appears to be the massive changes to the leveling system.

Things like level-gating resource gathering, salvaging and skill points; the issues with the new compass directing brand new players to high end zones; and preventing players from having full access to their class’s abilities until they’re halfway done leveling all seem like far more pressing issues at the moment

100% agree.

Chris, please take a note of this. I think it’s great that you are starting the CDI initiative again. However, I think there are more pressing things to discuss at length with the community than guilds.

1) The Traits system from the last Feature Patch seriously needs to be addressed. A lot of feedback was given, and it seems that after 5 months you are still at the point of asking for more feedback. That simply breeds more lack of trust in the system.

2) In conjunction with that, as it is part of the over-all change to the 1-80 leveling experience, is the more recent gating from the last Feature Patch.

Talking about Guilds just seems superfluous when there are other, more pressing concerns that are really fracturing your community.

Yeah, but I didn’t care about it then either. CDIs are great, but there is nothing they could do involving guilds that would make the game any better, and the only thing they could do is make things worse (by adding new features that you need to be part of a large guild to benefit from), so I’ve never cared about a guild-based CDI. Before this week, I would have wanted a CDI on the destructive changes to the Traits system introduced in the last feature patch.

This new patch is a major issue though, and they need to have a major sit-down explaining why we shouldn’t hate the things we believe we hate about it. Why should we like the new level-gating system? Why should anyone? Why should we appreciate having to go several layers deep to see what we just sold rather than having it as a top-level option? These are all far more important topics of discussion than anything involving guilds.

It’s sort of like planning a family meeting a week in advance to talk about how the kids could help out mom more around the house. You promise your wife it will get better, and set a date and time. Then, when the promised time comes up, the house catches on fire. Rather than addressing the fire, you stubbornly sit your family down in the burning living room to make good on your promise.

That is the degree of sense you are making. It is such a magnitudinous sign relating to the disconnect between what is going on, and what ANET wants to do.

Probably not until the weekend though if that’s ok. I have also been adopted for WvW so I am a little short on time.

PM ingame or on the forum?

On the forum please.

While I think a great many players also agree, the CDI for guilds was talked about before the patch.

To you maybe but the world doesn’t revolve around either you or I. I promised the CDI and we are doing it. There is plenty of awesome stuff that can come from it so it is a pleasure to be able to read what members of the CDI have to say.

if you don’t see the value in it then don’t partake.

Cheers

Chris

It’s sort of like planning a family meeting a week in advance to talk about how the kids could help out mom more around the house. You promise your wife it will get better, and set a date and time. Then, when the promised time comes up, the house catches on fire. Rather than addressing the fire, you stubbornly sit your family down in the burning living room to make good on your promise.

That is the degree of sense you are making. It is such a magnitudinous sign relating to the disconnect between what is going on, and what ANET wants to do.

No. It is nothing like that at all.

Are we going to get an official thread for New Player Experience feedback? Not being sarcastic – there are already so many threads it’s hard to decide which one to post in.

Ive been trying to do just that with this thread
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Feature-pack-9-9-feedback/page/7#post4392121

So far its working, but sometimes its difficult to find when It gets buried with all the new threads Popping up all the time.

Oh, I didn’t plan to participate in that one, I wouldn’t have anything to contribute, I’m just saying, there are more important things to discuss about Guild Wars 2 right now than guilds, more important to more players than just than you or I. Sometimes it’s worth changing plans when the plans no longer seem relevant to the situation on the ground. Talking about guilds at this moment is like shuffling deck chairs on, well, it’s not exactly the Titanic yet, but I don’t know, that ship that had the norovirus a while back?

I mean ok, if you really want to talk about guilds, then start up the little guild CDI, but also start one up about the new patch that gets just as much developer interaction and attention, because it’s not looking pretty around here. So far I haven’t seen even a single developer response on the new leveling system and why it behaves the way it does. They may be reading, but they aren’t responding, and that’s a problem to us.

Hey Chris, apologies, but I’d like to get clarification on another topic as there is clearly a huge misunderstanding which really has to be cleared up.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Dungeon-owner-sometimes-required/first#post4392439

The person who created the post finished a path on his own and tried to sell it. Two people joined and blackmailed him; he either has to pay or he gets kicked. He ended up getting kicked. The response seems automatically generated and it looks like whoever sent that last reply mixed something up (hopefully). I’m sure it’s not allowed but since there are people who could try to turn it around and abuse this statement, clarification would be appreciated. Thank you.

Not to beat a dead horse but, I will give it a few more smacks. That this patch is the perfect example of the lack of communication. Players are not adversaries to be manipulated and kept in the dark. We love this game and are here to help. We are your greatest support system. Let us in, please?

A 6 months patch. Not tested so, if they have these so obvious bug ? I think that they just can’t say that they screwed, and try to pass their mess as bugs.

EDIT below : you said there was obvious bugs, that the dev team stated them, for a patch prepared during 6 months. I won’t screen your post this is absurd.

Chris, you may be proud, but there’s been an uproar lately with the latest changes. You’ve also ignored the many complaints about the last ‘feature pack’.

I know you’re required to say those PR things, but are you honestly proud of the amazing team? These guys haven’t even put out half the content other teams managed to, and that’s having taken into account the many skins from the gemstore.

Yes absolutely I am proud of this team. I am sorry that you don’t agree.

This group of ladies and gentlemen has put out amazing content at an amazing rate.

And no i am not talking any PR I am a developer.

So to be clear, yes i am proud of this team, i am proud of our work, i am proud of how we support each other, i am proud of how much we care for the game and the community. You can twist that statement as much as you like but that is my stance.

Chris

I’m looking at my keyboard and try to undestand how you could mistyped proud and ashamed. It seems impossible.

This is what I’d like you to communicate to us : their work. What they did the last 6 month, or the last year, or the last two years. Here is an example of what I’d like, let’s say the last 6 months :

LS team (30 members)
- LS 2.0 part 1
- LS 2.0 part 2
- LS 2.0 part 3
- LS 2.0 part 4

I can’t provide another example because I don’t know if it exists another full team, but you got the thing I’d like. Show us with these details, by team, the work that you are proud of, because we can’t always see their work in the game. Make us proud too.

Many others and myself are reading the other threads. i think its best to hear all the comments and give folks more time to play with their alts before discussing so……

This “wait and see” approach Anet uses for most things so far is one of the reasons why the communication is considered to be really bad. Sometimes you need to react fast, not hope that it will all blow over. Frankly, while to some of the changes in this patch people may get used to 9even if they were changes for the worse), other will remain equally (and objectively) bad no matter how much time will pass. The personal story continuity for example is now completely broken on the last 2 chapters (and that is not an exagerration) – waiting will not change that.

Actions, not words.

And now anet has done it again, not listening to the community for such a long time has resulted in being completely out of touch and doing insane things like the current leveling changes, and a lot of anger has been sparked. I complain a lot about the lack of developer interest in the parts of the game I enjoy most, but much of what I’m seeing recently just makes me wish they keep staying away, the vision they have for the game seem to be so wildly conflicting with what potential improvements I can imagine. They have started communicating more (at least for now) but since they wont talk about what they are working on that is no guarantee it wont be some other ridiculous thing that just makes the community even angrier and the game worse. If they don’t stop this clearly counter productive policy of zero communication about upcoming changes and just take a big step back to see what people actually want they will just be killing the game more and more with every change like this. All communication in the world wont help you if you are not willing to gather input about whether people will enjoy the changes you are working so kitten. It is wasted developer time and all the anger is bad PR. Is this so hard to understand?

Guild Wars 2 is a very good game, so people can accept some mismanagement, but the pain threshold is only so high. The direction this is going in is very rapidly removing all confidence a lot of players have that anet has any idea what so ever of what they are doing. Please, just stop it.

When your customer tells you, flat out, how we as a community currently feel, and you dismiss them, then go further to say ,“your wrong” and leave no input or explanation other then your arrogance and possible pride.

Then the definitive thing we as a community know about you is that your in Denial.

And we won’t have the patience for you to go through all 5 steps. So fix things by being one of the first companies to actually take the next step in business and truly listen to your community.

Right now its screaming from bugs/glitches, and hungry and starved for content
