Hey all.

Wanted to touch on a few issues brought up about the Warrior stuff.

@ Warriors in PvE using Berserk’s: Yes, we knew this would be part of it. Now Warriors can’t just run around with full adrenaline all the time doing bonus damage. If they want to use their burst skills, then they obviously lose out on bonus power. This is an opportunity cost they need to factor into PvE encounters due to the new adren change.

Well, using Burst skills always depleted all the adrenaline (and the bonus power coming with it), and adrenaline decayed when out of combat anyway so there’s never been anything like “running around with full adrenaline”…

The only difference is we used to have some adrenaline to either get the bonus or use the burst skill – so we had something we could evaluate “opportunity costs” on – while now adrenaline decays so insanely fast it’s quite unlikely to even fill the bars and do anything with it, expecially not when hard-earned adrenaline would be used to fuel pretty average skills like Arcing Slice. Both the “bonus power” and and the Burst skill are lost in a matter of seconds: right now adrenaline starts to deplete as soon as an encounter ends, it’s not even “out of combat” as it was before the patch…

It was easier, perhaps too easy to mantain adrenaline before, but making it completely impossible to even plan on its use sounds like breaking the profession mechanic to me, and pretty much all the player giving feedback here. Please consider introducing a short grace period before decay kicks in so that at least building up adrenaline makes sense again, that’s all it’s being asked these days. Most players on the forums have been welcoming all the other changes.

Hey all.

words…………………………. no longer can 1 build (the Ham/LB) bring great damage, amazing condie resilience, a lot of sustained power and CC in one package. ………..more words…………………………………..While I realize it can be frustrating to have your favorite specs toned down a little

-Chap

But Hambow still brings all of that and is one of the builds least affected by your changes. You nerf the kitten out of an entire class mechanic to tone down a build that hardly gets affected by your changes. I think that you and the entire warrior community have a different definition of “toned down a little”.

I’m just going to call it like I see it. You threw warriors under the bus to appease the mob. It’s a pity really, I liked the idea behind some of the changes but you guys did a half@ssed job implementing those ideas and cut our viable build options in half doing so.

Forgive me if I come across as being rude, I have a habit of being bluntly honest when expressing myself.

The truth is the truth, you don’t have to apologise at all. He blatantly admitted they nerfed the entire Warrior profession due to a single build, Hambow and still remains the most effective tPvP build; also for more dungeon spots, LMAO yeah, sure the changes were also for that! You don’t get to use burst skills most of the time in the open world anymore, in most of the dungeon battles, in small WvW skirmishes, in zerg trains, it just depletes too fast; it was all towards nerfing hambow (a single build), in conquest mode (a single game mode) that few people if at all play anymore.
Ok well, Chaplan, you got it, you shifted the perception of Warriors being too strong, that was your main intention all around, but at what cost?

Ty again for doing this, but again @anyone who does such stuff since last time i asked wasnt replied to: How is the progress on more options like FoV, better zoom distance (aka boss distance), optimization/dumping some processing on the graphics card (its a sin that a game with a awesome style, but medium rez textures sinks to lower FPS than maxed out Crysis 3), etc

Alright, thank you & work well. :-)

Hi Kitty,

i will give you my thoughts on your questions tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

Chris

No problems, thank you for taking the time and I look forward to your answer. :-)

On the warrior topic, though I won’t talk about PvP since I don’t play it much, I cannot stress enough how much that destroys the Warrior’s mechanic. A nerf on the trait would have been much enough. Or better : why don’t you guys separate PvE adrenaline from PvP adrenaline and then adjust what needs to be adjusted ?

As I stated before, the thing is you have no incentive to use your adrenaline with a lot of weapons. This is a maths issues : if I use it, for most weapons, I will lose out some straight DPS (because of straight numbers or cast time and whatnot) or not gain much AND/OR I will lose the boons adrenaline gives me and increase the lost DPS. Cleansing on burst skills gives an incentive to use it and that’s good. If that’s too strong and you nerf it, perhaps you should take a look at what these skills bring individually, then, instead of double reducing the chances I will use them.

My opinion on that :
Traits that make you want to keep your adrenaline : not healthy. Instead making it so the lower it is the most you deal makes you want to use your burst skills and have a dynamic class mechanic. Look at it at some sort of need to unwind at some point after the adrenaline buildup, not like the warrior ends up overheating and destroying everyone with passive stats boons and gaining benefits from not using spells. Hell, make it so they’re actually losing some stats or health or something if they don’t press F1 and give adrenaline some love back, that’s so easily justified with the berserker mindset or whatever you want.

Give burst skills a bit more interest, some are obviously not fitting the game or underpowered.

I will let the PvP folks talk for themselves as I’m not a really advanced PvPer, but please don’t destroy PvE warrior, just separate the PvPAdrenaline from PvEAdrenaline. If you can’t stack adrenaline anymore, you might as well play any other class that will have something special for it, because that’s exactly the issue, you don’t stack adrenaline anymore. Especially for solo players, this is just a big “NOPE”. Though I think the whole problem is deeper and should be given some thought.

Dear Santa,
For christmas I’d like to get a crossbow for my characters.
With love, a cute kitty.

I got to admit, I’m a bit concerned about the point of traits like Heightened Focus, Berserker’s Power, and Adrenal Health – all of which are effective if you can maintain high adrenaline. Considering that adrenaline now starts draining the moment you leave combat at all, it seems to me that it pushes these traits into “only maybe useful in a long boss fight.”

I have not run the DPS numbers, so maybe I’m wrong about that. But that’s how it looks to me.

Or words to that effect.

Hey Chris,

Well, if you’re still working on that list of things the CDI’s have added to the game, I’ll say the new “Superior Runes of the Trapper” look awfully familiar .

My compliments to the team: I still like my 4/6 bonus better but can see why it might not have been technically possible. Their version of the 6/6 is better than what I came up with – love how it plays off of both classes’ other abilities. Elegant (a word I don’t use lightly).

If you’re in the goodie giving mood, I’d totally take a recipe to make them and maybe a dozen, so I can put them on my ranger and thief and try them out!

@ Warriors in PvP vs. a condie meta: Yes, there’s a lot more play now, and condie builds are less reliant on multiple stats than dps builds are. I expect we’ll see more Melandru/Hoelbrak in order to deal with the loss of condie clear the Warriors had before. I think this is ok though – no longer can 1 build (the Ham/LB) bring great damage, amazing condie resilience, a lot of sustained power and CC in one package. Every build needs to be weak to something, and I look forward to see what Warriors do in the coming weeks to deal with changes to adren. As of now, while watching games on live, I’m still seeing Warriors in pretty much every team. I think they’re still able to compete just fine, and bring a lot of great tools to a front line.

you say hambow can’t be “all mighty” now, but it’s still all mighty, because every other build got affected as well. hambow can still output amazing damage as a ptv while zerker gs war does pretty much nothing and die so fast.

also for PvE, rygg is right, warrior brings too little other then damage, sure you can plant some flags for some extra stats, but that matters little, and you don’t even get to plant a lot of flags if you use some defensive skills like endure pain or berserker stance and these are all selfish skills
compare to projectil blockage, aoe stealth, aoe blind spam etc and it lacks ranged aoe dps skills.

This just goes to show that most of what is done is simply to appease whiners or the most vocal. Or based on the analysis of metrics that somehow was analyzed way off target.

Seriously, if Anet wants to make balancing right, you cant just throw down the hammer on 1 or 2 classes, and expect all to be “balanced”. What this does is simply create other balancing issues, or making the balance disparity even greater. For example, look at what you’ve done to the warrior, then compared it to all other classes in various situation. See how conditions wreck the warrior even more now while the warrior dps is now sub-par? And don’t get me started on how we’re basically forced to limit out build diversity and weapon choice just to STAY VIABLE. This ain’t balance. Its outright nerfing. And if you are simply doing it to nerf, please just say its a nerf and not sugar-coat it cause really….theres no speck of sugar on it at all.

On another note:
Its been over 2yrs since the game has been out and somehow I’m still playing it, but the directions this game has taken is…well….akin to the Wizard of Oz with no golden brick road to follow and dead-ends all over.

While I realize it can be frustrating to have your favorite specs toned down a little, I’m also receiving a lot of messages from non-Warriors who feel like they, too, are able to compete for spots in PvE, WvW, or PvP. Now that Warriors have to build up their Adrenaline due to losing it more often in-between fights, and have to be careful on when they’re using it, there is a lot more play and counter-play on both sides of fights.

Sorry for such a rushed reply, but I wanted to thank all you guys for the great feedback.

-Chap

It is not just about having your favorite spec being toned down. I don’t even play like this normally(just using this to farm Large Skull/Elaborate Totems :p).

So here is an illustration of my basic problem with the change.

I kill the Grawl Berserker at the red arrow and then by the time I run over to the Grawl Trapper at the green arrow I’ve already lost several strikes of adrenaline. This is with the Warrior’s Sprint trait providing a 25% speed boost.

That situation would never happen in any sort of PvP unless the green grawl was AFK but in PvE it can be fairly common. I don’t think this is really “carrying your adrenaline from fight to fight”. This is “building adrenaline on one mob and using it on one that is 600 pixels away(measured from the foot of one grawl to the other)” reliably.

Before it was sticking around for too long but now it goes away too soon.

Not really. Anet admitted that they “listened to feedback on the forums” to make the changes they did, in this very thread. I’m talking specially about the nerfs to warriors.

And what do the balance sub forums consist of? Mostly of people complaining about things they refuse to adapt to and try to counter. Go ahead and look in the profession balance sub forum and you’ll see plenty examples of that.

It’s also a fact that anet balances the game around pvp and pver’s have to deal with those changes and nerfs which mostly don’t make any sense in context of the game mode.

Is there any intention of definitively answering the question on whether the massive chunks removed, and the jumbling up of other portions of the personal story is a bug -that will be fixed- or it is intentional and will remain. (I have characters part way through the story and need to know whether to hold off completing or not)

The way these changes have been made seem to me to be a way of fast-tracking the personal story to get people to level 80 and endgame dungeons as fast as possible.

To me, the richness of the lore and the world created in Guild Wars 2 has always been what sets it apart from many of the other games out there, and for all this to be removed is a big disappointment.

I would like to be able to play this game for far more than just accumulating gold to build a Legendary.

To my knowledge, they are working on addressing the plotholes that were brought up since the rearrangement. My guess is either they will stick to the current arrangement and add stuff to tie them in OR revert back to the original arrangement (I vote for bringing it back to what it once was as I imagine it’s going to be less difficult)

You will excuse me for saying so but there is, or was, an employe of anet in my alliance. I heard, not from him but from a guildie, that the developers had a problem.

This hypotetical problem would be that they’re told how to develop the game, against their best judgement sometimes.

I do not have detailed information as i was not part of the conversation but i can’t just put this aside. If there is someone else calling the shots, i feel the devs should go in damage control mode. Traits changes, NPE changes… Those were very sudden, no brutal moves for the players. That is why they rejected them.

I would like to suggest that in the case where my suspicions were right, and the devs have to answer to a higher up, they request that the question is debated by their team.

What i mean is this: Boss X says to Dev Y, remove key farming by scrapping the personnal story until level 10. Dev Y then goes: why? Boss X goes just do it. Dev Y goes: no. Boss X goes: what?!

Dev X goes: you will tell me what the problem is and we will fix it how we see fit, IF we see fit. Boss X dies of a heart attack. Boss XY goes: ok.

This is all just a theory.

Check out Anet’s reviews on glassdoor.com, should give you some perspective.

Check out Anet’s reviews on glassdoor.com, should give you some perspective.

Current and former employees appear to be universal in their criticism towards Anet, particulary upper management and how they are steering GW2. To quote a July 14th posting by former employee:

“Upper Management is poor: Some directors and design leads pay more attention to graphs and data then what people both in and outside of the studio are saying, and this often ends up with projects either being poorly prioritized, scoped beyond what a team can handle, or just driven in the wrong direction. The majority of the people driving the studio are severely out of touch with/don’t care about the people in the trenches and the players.”

“Production doesn’t schedule teams well: Crunch time lasts far longer than it should, projects end up far out of scope, and deadlines are frequently treated as movable guidelines. Despite the desire to make quality content, a lot of teams are forced to quickly move from project to project, which has resulted in releases far below the quality they deserve.”

http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/ArenaNet-Reviews-E255820.htm

So when they say, “our numbers xx number of players enjoy this, so we made that” you know that’s a problem.

While digging I found this quote from another former employer posted Feb 9th:

“Lastly, the recent move to offload the entire QA department to a third party agency is undeniably an unhealthy move in regards to the studio culture and the pre-existing dynamic of mentoring/hiring young developers and producers from within. This is often referred to as “cutting off the hand that feeds” in this scenario. There will be a trickledown effect that will likely become visible six months to a year after making this move. "

Any correlation between outsourced QA team and NPE disaster? I think so.

People have posted differing accounts on the “greatest fear” story line’s current situation- be it that it was removed, or hidden from storyline. I can’t tell if these differing accounts have been resolved yet.

I can attest to my particular case. Pre-patch, my necro was level 28 and had completed the story through the level 31 order of whispers mission. Post patch, I spent the week power-leveling in Eotm and playing the story. The “greatest fear” story missions were skipped over entirely. Other story missions which refer to those missions were not changed to reflect this.

Following the retaking of claw island I was directed to the rancor ruins mission, then to fort trinity for the claiming of the fort mission. The pale tree DID ask what my character’s greatest fear was, and I gave the response which normally leads to the Tonn storyline- some missions later, Trahearne’s one-on-one speech to my character about Tonn’s death was left intact. My character at no point had any missions interacting with Tonn.

This may not be the case for everyone, but it is what happened with my post-patch run through.

Did you read the employee reviews? They are all mixed in a pros/cons format. Sure, not everything is bad about working for/at Anet. There are are some good pros about working there but I get a little concerned when I see that pretty much every con says the same thing (it almost unanimous). Essentially, poor leadership, poor employee retention, sub contracting vital components like QA, upper management out of touch and the list goes on. All of it is starting to be reflected in the game.

Odd…I read those reviews and only found 2 mentioned the QA being out-sourced.

Well, perhaps 30 or 40 new reviews were written since I looked mentioning QA making it the vast majority.

Either way, I’m a little skeptical of post-employment interviews…from anywhere. They can be biased, being either from dissatisfaction causing them to leave, or dissatisfaction at being asked to leave. Of course, that’s just me.

It looks like a lot of the positive reviews echo the sentiments of the negative ones. It really does reflect in-game, on the players, most of what i read anyway. It’s to bad too, quick growth like that could be a death sentence when upper-management can’t handle the task. It’s also really not good when the parent company looks bad, especially if they influence them very much. Ahh good ole’ corporate politics strikes again.

Since Nexxon came into the fold you can clearly see the influence monetization has within the game and there is no doubt it gets discussed every time a potential idea gets drawn up for content. This is what I believe hampers development more than anything else. I truly believe that there has been a lot more unwelcome influence at Anet today then at any time during the building of GW2 and this greatly limits their ability to openly discuss things at a grass roots level. There has to be something to the fact that 2 of the 3 founders of Anet bolted just one year after moving into roles with NCSoft.

It should. Most of them are positive.

Look at the aspects that are positive versus the ones that are negative. It sounds like ArenaNet is a great company to work for and for the most part a very positive environment. But the cons are the things that impact us as players most: A lack of clear direction from management is called out in 8 out of 10 reviews on the first page. Unreasonable expectations and resource mismanagement is also mentioned more than once. Management walls itself off and refuses to share its grand design. The company feels rudderless with eleventh hour changes. All things that players have been commenting on here are being echoed by “former employees” (not sure how much of this to really believe…) It sounds like people still have faith in the company, but like us, aren’t really sure where it’s all going.

Finally, a hint on what is actually going to happen to the PS beyond “addressing issues”. Thank you, Chris.

Hey all,

This thread has been great and it’s had a lot of valuable conversation in both directions, as was intended. However, at this point it seems to have fractured into a lot of different conversations about a multitude of topics.

In the interests of getting the most value from your comments, I think it’s time to close this thread and ask you to please post your thoughts in an existing thread or, if there isn’t one, in a new thread of your creation.

Thanks for your contributions to this discussion. We’ll be watching for continued comments in the future!

I think a few people may have missed this thread, and it includes insights directly from ArenaNet President (and founder) Mike O’Brien on how we communicate with players. So I’m bumping the thread to the front of the forum so that everyone can get a view of how we feel as a company about communication. Communication is important to us. I think Mike expressed the reasons behind our practices very clearly, and I invite you to give the first post a read.

Since Mike posted this, ArenaNet has made additional substantial changes, including the creation of a brand new Forum Communications Team. None of our changes — both announced and unannounced — will result in overnight changes. But some of you have noticed that more red-flagged posts are appearing.

That will increase in the future.

And really, I think that says it all. Thank you for reading this and for being part of our forum family.
