Communication with the community
The only actual replies you can find are to threads like “Hey Anet guys I love you and love this game.”…with reply “Hey player X we love you too thanks for your support, see u in game!”
This part.. I trully agree.
I think there always lurking in the background, so they know whats being said about the game.

In past we KNEW they were lurking cause they actually replied to our threads with some feedback, thoughts, assurances.
Now we can only guess.
Dev interaction is not always a good thing over all. Devs are not PR people and most the time things they saw are taken out of content or perspective.
Having a bunch of Devs talking about stuff that is not ready for the main channels of communication is not a good thing.
A good example of Devs talking with the community being a bad thing is the Riot Games forums (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=2), It’s not as bad as it used to be but you’d get Devs on there all the time talking about half done projects or ideas they have for improvements on the game that never see the light of day.
Video game message boards are almost always a vary negative place as the people happy with the game are playing it in place of debating it online. So you are really just demanding that the Devs do just about the worst thing they can do by throwing their had in with the angry people where that is the job if their PR department.
So all in all stop demanding the Devs talk on the boards, you don’t want that.

And frankly, I’ve seen more dev posts on these forums than I have for WoW, EQ2 or any other MMO I’ve played.
The last HUGE patch they added had nothing useful, mate.
I chatted with an enviro dev in game, we talked about maps/jumping puzzles and such. He doesn’t have much reason to go on forums, but I see some posting here and there, especially in the ranger part of the forum… or when there’s a big event. I can give you screens of the convo for proof? :P

Okey, let the devs work on the game, but have other ppl like community managers and others focused on communication with the community replying to us.
They did state that the most important thing are players and the community, so they have to have ppl specifically focused on relations with the community.

One time event that received as much hate as I have yet to see in any MMO history (dont get me wrong, the idea behind the event was great, but the execution was worse than poor)
Half finished zone thats pretty much dead right now with no incentive to go there.
I will give them the dungeon (which im not even doing) but also the leveling system there and the ascended items brought more negative feedback than positive.
Maybe if they have discussed this with us, community, they would have not done these things so poorly. They would be happy cause we would play the game and we would be happy because it would turn out right.

From a PR stand point that is an awful thing for them to do. If whatever the thing they are talking about does not get fixed quickly after that then people start quoting the post and saying the Dev lied.
People take the word of Devs as the word of God when it comes to games, they have to vary careful about what they say randomly online as it might come back to bite them, saying nothing at all outside of official channels or interviews (such as the AMA the other week) is the best way for them to act.

I completely disagree with this and if you actually read the AMA, you would know that Chris said the same, that AMA on reddit is not the bets way to commune with the community.

It was still a controlled official interview of sorts, he knew what he was allowed to tell the community and he controlled what questions he took. The main reason they used Reddit is that they used it a bunch for communication before the forums came up. It’d have been better to do it using the main forums now and I think that is how it will be done at such point they do another AMA.
I see people spamming groups for fractals all the time – clearly a big chunk of people are enjoying it.
No, they are not enjoying it. They actually hate it but they need to keep doing it on daily bases so they keep progressing in levels and are not left behind, because if they get left behind in levels, they will have hard time finding a group again.

You ever watch what happens to a community over a year or so when this happens?
Angry gamers are always going to be angry, Devs can’t say anything to change that. If the Devs start talking to them then their anger shifts from all around just anger at the game to targeted anger at the Devs. Devs withdraw even more from just getting yelled at any time they post, the game suffers, etc.
If they have something worth saying then it will come down to us over the main communication lines (the front page, the log in screen, interviews, or whatever).
At the vary most what they can do is open a single topic on a subject such as X Class Balance or World Exploring and allow open debate that they will join in on there. You’d want to make sure it was heavy modded tho, mostly only allowing well thought out arguments and not just people whining about how they feel about their class.
But on the subject of Class Balance I don’t think we will be seeing much of that till we have something like Elitist Jerks breaking the game down to a Science like they did WoW.

I’d agree with this but how many days, weeks, months do they really expect us to wait when a lot of this stuff should have been done before release. The devs for all those other games deliver. I haven’t seen anything delivered except what people feel as punishment via DR. I like the fractals but man they have really taken over.
A few points to make here, although based on the level of hysteria I’ve seen sweeping the forums, I imagine that it will make little to know difference.
#1, I’ve been playing 2 MMOs over the past 6 months, including major releases. The devs in the other MMO didn’t deliver.
#2, If you’ve seen a slump in communication over the past 3 weeks, it’s like due to the fact that we are now in the holiday season. This means that folks will be taking 1-2 week vacations at a time. Yes, even if you don’t like where the product is at, they still deserve their vacations. The devs that are working are probably pushing a little bit harder to get things done.
#3, I’m beginning to wonder if people have actually read the AMA for themselves or are mostly taking their views on it from other posters. I did read the AMA and what I got from it was this:
A) Admission that the release was a mistake the way it went out. This included concern about drop rate, the fragmentation that occurred, and the grind that resulted from FOTM being necessary.
Confirmation that not only do they intend to release changes to take (at least some of) the pain away, but that those changes were actually supposed to be released at the same type, but weren’t fully baked enough yet, so they were held back.
Okay, there’s my spit into the wind for the day.

They broked iZerker, this forum had a riot and it took them DAYS to answer even tho there were tones of threads about it. Now its been two week and after breaking it all they’ve said (only once) is we’re looking into the problem!? what’s up with that? it makes perfect sense to me to revert its update to its last status IF it breaks, find a way to fix it and then update… but noooo they just let it broken with tones of other skills and Traits. What is going on, i don’t understand? Is there like under 10 people at anet or something? wth
I agree. The only posts I see anyone of consequence at ANet chime in on are the occasional “I like this” posts.
For the huge volume of negative traffic, the only staff I see are Moderators closing threads and infracting people. Well, except for when Regina closed the mega-thread, but she didn’t say anything useful at all. Just closed it. What kind of message does that send?
I’m getting really really frustrated with the lack of useful information from ArenaNet, and the lack of communication. And I don’t understand why, when they DO communicate, it’s on Reddit, and it’s vague. It’s never here. It’s never to the point.
They don’t really appear to actually care much about the community.

So, you would like them to state every day, “Still looking into it.” “Writing a fix for it.” “Fix didn’t work.” “Trying again.”

I’m sure it does, but honestly, it’s rarely that easy to revert a change in a complex code base like this. Even with modern sophisticated version control management, there are still dependencies and potential for unintended breaks. Heck, sometimes it’s tremendously difficult to isolate just which change caused the break.

Bad logic. They have forum moderators whose sole jobs are to ….moderate the forums. But apparently, that means ‘babysit’ the forums since all we really see are thread closes, thread merges, & title corrections. It’s like the people in charge of the forums have no real clue what’s going on back at Anet HQ. Haven’t seen a moderator give us any posts of substance, just “question answered. thread closed.”

Yes it’s pretty depressing. Basically the only real input I see in any thread from any team member is from John Smith over in the trading post forums. And even that is getting rarer. Their pr is going out the window at this point.

Which is the point I think he was trying to make. It’s sure be nice to actually here from actual spokespeople instead of only moderators. As it stands, you don’t really get the impression they’re listening, even if they say they are. Why? Because they’re not interacting.
So, right now I see interaction from Robert Hrouda, John Smith, and Johnathon Sharp. My assumption is that Chris Whiteside is either on holiday vacation (he likely was working 14 hour days up until the Nov. Release) or continuing to wrestle with his team to get the last bits tweaked. That leaves us with a few more, but I’m not positive what additional things they are supposed to say that would make people happy. I’ll place this on it’s own line for easy snipping:

I completly understand the devs since november i have only seen posts of ‘gear grind’ ‘broken promises’ ‘gw2 dieing only fotm has players’. In the ama they anwserd these things and i dont see the use of anwsering it again.
I don’t understand why gamers feel that developers are their slaves and should be in constant contact with them. I see this a lot lately and not just with this game. So many times, players get on the forums and complain about how the developers don’t spend enough time on the forums responding to every little complaint. Really, it’s getting rediculus. Developers have better things to do than respond to all your complaints, like working on fixes. I have to think that developers wish they could give some players their money back just to make them go away.
Sadly, I think sometimes devs (and community managers, ironically) sometimes shy away from interacting with a game’s community due to the influence of…ah, more passionate personalities. Let us consider these folks under the banner of “crazypants”.
By crazypants I don’t mean those who are lobbying for a particular feature to be added to/removed from a game, or who are asking that a troublesome bug be fixed. We all do that, to one extent or another. What I’m talking about are those who go overboard…they become rude, insulting, or even stalky. They find out private information about other fans or studio employees and post that. Or they simply harass someone on forums or in-game. I’ve had that last happen to me personally (in another game), so I can see why it would spook Anet or any other game company, for that matter.
Now, I’m interested by community managers and their work, so I always try to chat with them if an opportunity presents itself. Do you old-time GW1 players remember Gaile Gray’s in-game visits? She (and Froggy) would appear in LA and answer questions, chat, and generally hang out. My warrior, Nikk Hexem, was named for the frontman of 311 and Gaile was very amused by that. It was fun times. But during her visits we’d see an increasing amount of nonsense questions being spammed by the ill-mannered, the uninformed, and bots for all I know. Gaile bore it all with a grace I’ve never seen matched in a game, but I expect she was a little relieved when her change of jobs brought an end to these visits.
Fast forward to last week. I had my mesmer out for one of the Shatterer’s visits and noticed people in map chat were saying an ArenaNet employee was in the vicinity. Sure enough, after “Shatty” was downed a player with the Anet logo was observed. I don’t know how other players’ interactions with him went, but I can say that my brief, polite greeting and encouraging note was replied to just as politely, then we all went on our merry ways.
Was he a dev? A community manager? The receptionist? No idea, but they’re out there. If you’re fortunate enough to encounter one, remember Kipling’s advice about a courteous tongue. It’ll get you far.

Pre-launch was really good. They spoke at length about the vision and direction the game was going and how they saw it playing it.
Now they hide in their offices with their tails between their legs wondering what is going on afraid to say anything.
They have dropped 25% of the population in 2 weeks since that patch and they are scrambling right now. Raids and trinity type mechanics are inbound for Feb-March and they still need to recover from the lost shore debacle.
Got your rewards yet? didnt think so.
They will remain silent to the new year and start over unless there is a significant crisis like dropping another 25% of the population.

Which was exactly why Chris Whiteside was in an AMA talking to the community about the direction the game was going and how they saw it playing out. Do they need to say it again once a week?

Hey guys,
I have been to these forums since the day 1 it came out. At the beginning I saw A LOT of feedback from the devs and community managers to different threads regarding pretty much any aspect of the game. I loved that because it really felt like the devs are reading the feedbacks and really want us to help them make the game better. That was such a refreshing thing compared to what I experienced in SWTOR.
And also I remember the quality of players feedback being much better due to that because players really felt that by providing their feedback they can make a difference.
For past few weeks however, the only interaction we have with devs and community managers is thought thread locks, reminders to "keep this thread flame free" and in some cases notification that either you msg has been deleted and u get one black point or your msg has been moved to different thread.
The only actual replies you can find are to threads like "Hey Anet guys I love you and love this game."...with reply "Hey player X we love you too thanks for your support, see u in game!"
I have yet to see some real quality feedback from the devs in here in past few weeks that would make me feel like my feedback could make a difference again.
Where did they go? Why they dont talk to us anymore? What happened to "community is #1 priority for us"?
Let this be a reminder to you guys working on this game. If you dont show interest in our feedback, there will be no point providing one. And you might think about how come the quality feedback provided by players on these forums went so downhill.

I didnt make this up, it was ANet philosophy since the beginning. They said interaction with the community is the KEY to success. I agreed with that approach and I still do. However apparently lately we have a very different opinion on what interaction is.
Somebody above mentioned if we would rather have daily update on issues saying “this fix didnt work we are working on new one.” And stuff like that. It doesnt have to be daily, weekly update would be fine. There are many issues with this game (there are plenty of stuff in this game that are perfect too!) and community is coming to these forums to let the GW2 employees know about them with hopes that they will be noticed, worked on and fixed.
One 2 hours session in two months where one representative answers few selected questions (and sometimes answers one question few times to kill the time) that just fit in their agenda is not my idea of healthy interaction with community.
GW2 employees prouded themselves on having great relationship and interaction with the community, which was true before launch and shortly after the launch. But not in past weeks.

Because those of us that have been around a while have seen it work. After you see a dev loved by the comunity for their effort and comunication you hold others to a high standard.

Not following this much… Robert Hrouda has been interacting in the dungeon forums a lot, even recently.
It’s already been stated that guesting and guild improvements are on the list of things that they are trying to work in.
Furthermore, if we look at your list and the lists of others, we’ll see that it’s not just 6 things that the “community” wants as a priority, but 60. So, they’re juggling getting those 60 things in as well as getting new content for the people who don’t have anything to complain about, but are just enjoying the game. So… yeah… They’re balancing, but I’m pretty sure they’ve already communicated once on all of those issues that were just brought up.
I’m really wondering if people mean “fix” when they say “communicate.”

I see a lot of turmoil and frustration in this post, which I see as comprehensible. Regarding communication, the Dev team might not communicate as much because they are busy improving the game but they are aware of everything going on in the forums, as the Moderator team and CC’s are their eyes around here, so please rest assured that they have constant feedback.
Anyway, I would like to remind you all to refrain from using staff call outs in your thread titles. We have to moderate and infract those kind of behaviours, but we rather educate our forum users to not infract the CoC and achieve a more friendly and constructive enviroment on the forums.
