Q:

I would like to know, where is the logic and the competitive side of these sales?
World of Warcraft is 50Euros and then 13Euros for each month respectively(has a big history and player base, also you can buy game time with gold these days, making it really appealing).

The elder scrolls online:B2P same model like gw2,(big history and lore as well for 50-60 euros)

Now….where is the logic behind selling and expansion BUNDLED with the base game for 100Euros and giving 4000gems(50Euros value) when the standard version is going for 45Euros? Does Anet actually provide something for free as a goodie,or its actually a huge money grab?

I want to hear Anet’s official responce to my question as well as other players confronting me about my claims.

Thank you for reading my post.

A:

You have to compare anet’s prices with anet’s products. There you have gw1 and gw2. One gw1 expansion had way more content then HoT and the price was 30$. Gw2’s price at release was 59$ and 79$ for digital deluxe.

Basically gw2 veterans now have to pay for an expansion that includes close to no content (remember most of the changes are not HoT changes, it are gw2 core usual update changes which are paid by the gemshop!) but the veterans have to pay the same price again for a 3 year old game they already bought.

The conclusion is easy, currently anet is ripping off their loyal (some 10 years+) customers and is sadly defended by new customers (and some kids that changed from other games to gw2 and will leave again after some month/years).

The 100 euro version also comes with some other things (character slot, glider skin, finisher, mini, guild hall decoration) as well as the 4000 gems.

Whether them things are worth the 5 extra euro or not is up to the person though.

1) ArenaNet will never reply to this.

2) Yes, it’s a money grab.

Instead of the free ‘expansion-like’ content they promised releasing through the LS, we got some short, linear story instances to click through and a couple of PvE maps in three years. Now they want more money to provide ‘actual’ expansion content.

And all the rest of the goodies….its just not there…the value isnt there….i can pay 50 euros now and get the full WoW experience..i can pay 50 euros ang get the full ESO experience….why bother paying 100+60 that i paid in the past just for a stupid mmo???

Then go buy THOSE games, if you feel their value is more worthwhile.

Everyone has to decide for themselves if the value is worthwhile to them. Do they enjoy the game? Do they like what the expansion brings? So on and so forth.

The standard is 50$. Which is the base game and the expansion. Its more geared towards those that are just picking up the game. Since I can’t log into the game, and it can be purchased via the BLTC (per the FAQ), is it less expensive via that route (as you obviously already have the game)?

The next step up comes with a character slot, a mini, a finisher, a decoration, a title, and a glider skin. Almost all of those have a dollar amount which can be attached to them:
Character slot – 10$
Mini – ranges from 350 to 500 gems, so lets just say 5$
Finisher – ranges from 650 to 800 gems. new ones are pretty much always 10$
We don’t know if they will sell decorations or gliders in the gemstore, but it’s highly likely as they are cosmetic customizations where monatization wouldn’t actually affect game play. They’ll likely range between 5$ and 10$ a piece. So we’ve more than covered the $75 for the deluxe.

The ultimate adds 50$ worth of gems for half the cost, taking the purchase price up to 100$

I’d say you’re getting what you’re paying for.

It boils down to do you feel the expansion is worth the base 50$. No? Then don’t buy it and move on.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I’m not sure of the price points in euros, but for the UK:

  • Standard is £34.99
  • Deluxe is £59.99
  • Ultimate is £79.99

If I were to buy the deluxe version (£59.99) and 4000 gems separately (£42.50) it would cost me £102.49. In other words, buying the Ultimate addition (which has everything the deluxe addition has plus the gems) would save me a little over £20. That’s how they compare, at least in the UK.

At the end of the day, I can’t tell you whether it’s worth it or not. if you don’t think it’s worth it, just get the cheapest priced option if you intend on buying it.

As for the other games, with WoW you still need to buy all of the previous expansions (which comes to a total of ~£45 in total for the standard game) plus subscription costs to get the full WoW experience (I doubt very much anyone could complete everything in WoW in a month). In ESO it costs £49.99 for the standard game (not taking into consideration any of the paid DLC it’ll release in the future).

Time is a river.
The door is ajar.

Nah, even World of Warcraft has jumped onto “just buy the latest expansion and you’re good to go.” You DO still have to buy the base game, but you certainly don’t need to buy every single expansion.

This is pretty much the industry standard now. What Arena.net has done (both with the bundling and the pricing) isn’t particularly new.

EQ2 was always that way. Desert of Flame also included the base game and
Kingdom of Skies included DoF and base .. and so on.

Und who would really have a benefit from it when new player now had to pay
50 for expansion + 40 for base game, so that you need to pay $90 to start ?
Only ANet maybe have a benefit from it, but they decided it would be better
not to have such a high price barrier for new players.

I remember 5 year ago or so i should pay $120 or so if i wanted to play WoW.
Absolute a no-go for me.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Oh, I know, Beldin.

I’m also not surprised that “veteran” players are losing their kitten about it. Veteran players will lose their kitten over a balance update. Of course they’re going to be in riot mode when asked to pay money for something.

I just have to repeat to myself, “This reaction isn’t new. This is how MMO players have always behaved. Relax.”

The difference is simple, very simple.

Everyone where scammed equally in the others game.
Whereas, there it’s veteran getting scammed and newcomer being rewarded.
Customer being treated differently based on if they already get the game or not.

I can’t speak for anyone else and I can’t convince else into believing that this is a bad deal for current players. All I can do is hope that there will be enough people like me who will hold out long enough to force Anet into reviewing their pricing. If the sales number aren’t there something will be done to rectify the situation whether it be reducing price and compensating the suckers that paid the current price with extra in game perks or just add more in game perks into the xpac.

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

Which people have been buying with cash, because if they didn’t GW2 wouldn’t be as profitable as it is (refer to NCSoft earning reports). If a significant portion of the player base didn’t opt to support ANet with cash purchases of gems, GW2 wouldn’t be here, it would have gone the way of City of Heroes.

Coarr’s example only covers people who haven’t supported GW2 at all, which I’m not knocking, I’m just pointing out it’s not true for everyone.

If you want to compare you have to compare EVERYTHING. Not just the little bits you want to compare to make your point.

I’ve compared WoW and WoW expansions to Guild Wars 2 and HoT from what we know so far.

I don’t enjoy playing WoW. The game is annoying and dated. It’s too focused on stuff I don’t care about. The community is toxic to me.

But I could get more in an expansion of WoW. All I have to do is pay $15 a month for two years and then I can get more in a $60 expansion.

Or I could be ESO and charge a sub for a year before going free to play so a million people paid me $150, and then go free to play.

People need to wake up. Even if you think the expansion is overpriced, it’s just not that bad compared to the overwhelming amount of options out there. The game isn’t pay to win. It doesn’t have a sub. And I like it better.

Compare it all, or not at all.

Because the prices of something 10 years ago really isn’t a very good barometer due to inflation and other currency fluctuations.

You can compare prices to other goods being produced at the same time.

The fact that you could’ve played Guild Wars 2 from August 28th, 2012 all the way to today, June 17th, 2015 paying only the game ONCE. I’m really honestly truly surprised people are so up in arms about the expansion price.

They are a business and they need to make money. 3 years of game time included with the original purchase price is pretty darn good deal. Think of the hours you’ve poured into this game, and you could’ve done it all without spending an extra cent. That’s 3 years of contents, updates, changes, revamps, etc.. all included with initial purchase price.

I gladly paid extra for the upcoming expansion, because I know it’ll be another 2-3 years of content, upgrades, patches, and revamps. I don’t get the comparison with other subscription games, you would’ve spent an arm and leg playing both WoW and Everquest. There are also comparisons to ESO, which is quite unfair as ESO came out as a subscription game. I know I dropped over $100 playing that game within 3 months, that’s retail + monthly subscriptions for just 3 moths that I stayed in ESO. ESO only became b2p recently, and let’s just wait until they release their own expansions to see how pricey things can be before you do the hoorah’s.

By the way, most MMO’s now sell expansions with base game included. So don’t think the price would’ve been cheaper without the base game included. This really is cheap entertainment, for hours upon hours of gameplay time. Yes yes I get that GW1 used to be this way, WoW used to be that way, EQ used to be another way, and gas used to also be 50 cents. Things change and I really don’t see Anet stepping out of bounds with their expansion pricing compared to other MMO’s on the market. And I’m one of those gamer freaks that have played over 10 MMO’s in the past 15 years.

I actually think GW2 has done a good job with their content offering. Many other MMO’s force you to buy things you need through their cash shops, where as GW2 you could have played all the game had to offer in the past 3 years without the need to buy anything from their RMT.

People always think grass is greener on the other side. I’m one of the millions, yes millions, that went back to WoW for Warlords of Draenor expansion. I spent $70 on the digital deluxe edition of WoD, played my hearts out, and was done with the expansion in less than 2 months. You should’ve seen the complaints on the forums about the lack of raid content, lack of PvP content (they didn’t even launch with a new Battleground), and a general sense of lack of content outside garrisons. The only PvP content was Ashran which, let’s just say it was a glorified PvE raid zone, with bad lag, queues, and whacky rewards. True, they’ve released more content since. But that’s $15 a month you’ve had to pay each month now waiting for that content. And now that we’ve learned millions have left WoW again, I’m one of them.

Grass isn’t greener on the other side. And those complaining about GW2’s expansion price really have not spent much time elsewhere. Because I can say GW2 is cheap entertainment compared to a lot of MMO’s on the market today.
