[Complaint] Trading Post Restrictions
It’s the weekend so I can’t pad down the hallway and ask about this, but I do wonder if the restrictions are related to RMT and/or botting.
I am sorry that you’re experiencing an inconvenience in posting trades. I will see if I can find out a bit about this, but I feel very sure that the team would not add random time-based restrictions without a really strong reason to do so.

I don’t think it’s about the system not handling the data, I think it’s to slow down people who hack accounts and wipe the accounts clean by selling everything on TP. They then send the money they get to their own account.
It might also be to restrict how much the TP is played at once.
Similarly, the mail system has a restriction. You can only send 2 mails until you get a message pop up.
Oh, FYI- I believe the timer works in an annoying way. Once you have received the “error” message, you must wait the full 2 minutes (or whatever it is) before you start listing things again, otherwise the timer will reset back to the 2 full minutes.
Edit: Just to add, I rarely encounter these error messages now. I’ve trained myself to TP little and often to keep my inventory space clean. I usually salvage most things anyway, which also helps. I only come across the error if I’m doing my quarterly material storage spring-clean or if I’m selling items as a result of levelling a crafting profession.

Ah, yes. The confusing error which used to displayed nothing more than “Error attempting to sell”. I agree, it is annoying, especially with the insane amount of loot we get in no time at all.
Even at snail’s pace, you’ll eventually run into the error. It simply limits the number of operations within a certain amount of time. A limit far too low, if you ask me.
I buy/sell dozens of different items per day and I can count on one hand the number of time I have run into any restrictions. I wonder if John Smith has data on how many players see this message and how often; I suspect it’s a tiny fraction of the community.

You must be a slow clicker or sell small amounts of items at a time. This error comes up every time after 6-7 items if you sell them one after the other and it’s extremely annoying

Not for everyone though! I was selling stuff after my SW runs last night and sold 10 different things in under 3 minutes and never saw the message. I dont use the TP to sell things very often as i usually salvage everything.

But the thing is selling 10 items in under 3 mins only requires selling 1 item every 18 seconds. The problem is when you sell 1 item in 3 seconds

Well, thats understandable thats practically bot level of clicking, probably the only reason that warning exists to be honest. I could and used to sell faster, about that rate and ran into it that message alot. but that was before i actually started paying attention to the price of what i was selling.
Thanks for posting this. The answer that I found in the thread, from John Smith, is that the limits were put in place for technical reasons.
I hope that’s helpful information.

My work-around for this is as follows. I adjust almost every price, selling things somewhere between the buy and the ask prices. Since I started doing this, my number of time-outs has dropped to (almost) nothing. Apparently, the little extra time spent changing the price is long enough for the “technical reasons” to do their thing.

Relative to people in my guild, I’m an extremely fast trader. Relative to you, I’m not.
So while I’m only affected rarely and the OP might be affected daily, we have no idea whether this affects 0.0001% of traders or 10% or 90%.
Obviously, if the issue affects a majority of those using the TP, ANet should consider committing resources to address any technical limitations or other issues that create error messages when attempting transactions every 3 seconds. From a business perspective, I hope it’s just as obvious that if the number is less than .1% of traders, then this is unlikely to be worth tackling. In between those “extremes,” ANet would have to make a judgment call.
Incidentally, I don’t think one transaction per 3 seconds counts as “near botting” levels. I don’t come near that because (a) I buy/sell a variety of things and always set my offer price and (b) I rarely buy/sell more than 5+ stacks at a time.
I speculate that only a tiny fraction the community runs into this “transactions/second” limitation. And if that’s the case, it’s completely understandable that that ANet would be unlikely to spend much effort to address this, even though it might be very frustrating to those affected.

Its not “that” helpful lol. May as well just say “Because it is”
