First off while i am new here i have been lurking for years in the fourm and reading all press release and whatnot as i am a huge fan(had this account since GW1, was a HUGE GW1 fan) and am just getting my first character to max level, should be there in a few days. I started late as real life was getting in the way of a new MMO before xmas so didnt start playing till jan but have real life friends who have played since beta.

I have some serious concerns about the direction of the game, having read all the marketing material used to promote this game pre launch and reading dev statement released while this game was in beta i learned alot about what the game was going to be.

The issue is the game we have and the game they talked about are not the same game.

They promised no grinds and all builds/playstyles being supported, there is even a statement released from the owner of the company himself saying there will be no grinds.

One of the main reasons i liked GW1 so much was if you had a max level character and wanted to try a new build that could be done within the hour, including obtaining the max level gear to support your new stat choices. In this game doing the same thing would take weeks if not months to obtain the new gear required for your new stat choices. Im sorry to break it to you but thats a huge grind to find out you may or may not even like the build for what you want to do with it(PvP or PvE or WvW)

And thats assuming your new stat choice if its even possible, i was thinking the other day about how i might like my warrior better if i went power/precision/toughness instead of the power/toughness/vitality build im running now since i got the loads of HP from being a warrior i might like to trade that HP for crit chance so i wont need the HP as i will be getting the kills faster. So I go onto the wiki and find that that particular stat combo is not possible with top tier gear, i mentioned this in guild chat and find im not alone and thats far from the only stat combo thats not offered in the top tier gear, and im far from the only one who is upset about it.

This is far from supporting all builds and makes the statements made about supporting all builds decieving at the best and outright lies at the worst when you dont offer top tier gear available with all the possible stat combo’s.

Also healers are getting kittened up the kitten i had a guy in map chat the other day start raging like a son of a kitten because we had killed a champion monster and he didnt get credit at all for it. While i didnt see him hit it at all and do damage he ran around and healed/supported us that were fighting very well and would even go as far as to say we would not have won without him. Yet he gets no credit? yeah thats really supporting all playstyles guys! NOT. This is probably why my friends told me to play a warrior they said this was a pure DPS game and that high DPS builds were the best and got the best results, so far seems like they are right.

So while im still enjoying the game so far im a little worried about the differences between what was promised and what is happening, i hate WoW and hate to say this but it seem like every patch this game is moving closer to a WoW clone and further from what was talked about during beta.

Which isnt a bad thing i guess if thats what the devs decided to do but why not tell us this during development? Why tell us its going to be some ground breaking game that will appeal to all(as stated in that manifesto video) and then take steps to slowly turn the game into another WoW clone, honesty is always the best answer just come out and tell us what is going on and why you have taken the steps you have to change this game so much from the original design decisions.

Also, not a fan of the level nurfing in the low level areas, if you are going to nerf all my stats and attack down to some level 8 peon level the jesus christ nerf my repair and fast travel costs down to a level 8 peon. Its not fun to go help a friend, get beat to death by some champion you should be able to steamroll solo since you are really 6 times his level but yet due to level nurfing still die, then cause your low level buddy is also obviously dead you fast travel to a waypoint for over a silver, fix you gear for another 10 silver, and even if you killed every single mob on that whole section of the map would not make enough silver to cover your repair/travel costs. This is just stupid, nerf my whole character or none at all, dont nurf my attributes and damage output but still stick me with full repairs and full price for travel thats just kitten

Anyone else have any thoghts on this?

TL:DR

Devs announce groundbreaking game and then take steps to turn it slowly into another WoW clone.

It all changed Nov 15th. They have lost the majority of the population and continue in that direction.

I really wish that they did come out and say suck it this is how it is. But I doubt it. They will continue to slowly mold and progress into the full VP game they want.

Locking you into 1 build is stagnant death. That is a hint for someone special.

My personal thoughts are this.

This is not better than GW1. And the things they are doing are just going to push this game into the same old MMO that’s been around for a long time.

Easiest way to sum this game up for me. If there was a monthly fee I would not keep playing.

To add to this post i think i should say something.

I liked GW1, I like GW2 so far. I do not like WoW, its a good game just not my cup of tea.

Before dumping thalsands of hours into GW2 i would just like to know if they are going to be bringing the game closer to what was advertised and the original plan or closer to WoW type game.

They say the former while all the patches since launch point to the latter, so i think thats a fair question.

Because we need yet ANOTHER thread to complain about the same thing that people have been complaining about. Those other threads weren’t good enough and the OP decided we need a new thread about how Anet said one thing and did something else…and if that were truly the case, well, that would be fine. But it’s not really the case.

A lot of people bring up the manifesto, which said “I swung a sword, I swung it again, I swung it again. We don’t want people to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one likes to grind. We want to change the way that people view combat.”

A lot of people somehow take this to mean that there will be no grind in the game at all, where clearly the type of grind Colin is talking about there is combat grind, as in grinding mobs to level. Since I didn’t have to grind mobs to level (exploring and crafting are far faster), it’s hard to say that was misleading.

This game is different from Guild Wars 1, but even Guild Wars 1 had grindy bits, including getting certain achievements, or very hard to get weapons or armor. People did farm the voltaic spear, after all.

None of the content in this game is gated. The only reason you NEED ascended gear is because it’s in your head that you need it. I do everything in this game without that gear just fine. It’s easy enough to get exotics and even that’s more than you need to do anything in the game.

Anet made a game, and made some changes. Not in the entire direction of the game, since I’m playing exactly the same way I’ve been playing since launch.

And yes, people did leave, but the overall game population is still going up. Those who think it’s not are clearly not playing on my server. In fact, Colin recently said that both the population and the concurrent player population has been increasingly lately.

Yes, some people who took the devs literally and hung on every single word they said were disappointed with some of the changes. And some people think you absolutely must have ascended gear.

Shrugs. Thinking something doesn’t make it true.

Honestly Rifter, It seems like they don’t know what to do with this game. I don’t really see a firm direction. They may have one. But it’s not clear as to what it is.

It wasnt so much the manifesto i think that made people think about there being no grind but the owners comments, ill see if i can dig up a link.
