Confused about the control layout.
Rebind
/15chars.
not a problem really
I use wsad to move 1-5 weapon skills heal skill shift-x utility z x c, f1-f4 q e mouse 3 4, 10=shift-e
Practice :P
Eventually you’ll get a better feel for the default controls unless you’d prefer to keybind them elsewhere. Some people prefer to put some of their primary weapon skills on their mouse buttons. Pretty much just get creative and figure it out as you go and keep tweaking it until it feels right. Give it a chance first, though, unless you know how you’d like to set up otherwise.

In all my years of MMOing I’ve never been able to WASD. Not only do I have small hands, I’m generally muscle-memory limited to one key tap at a time, no combos, and while I’m a fine touch typist I can’t reliably hit the WASD movement keys while focusing on the screen during combat. Hurray for the Naga HEX mouse, with its simple array of 6 buttons by my thumb. That covers all movement needs, leaving the keys free for firing off abilities.
TESO is a bit annoying in that I can’t mouse move forward, but at least I only have to hit W and the mouse buttons do the rest. GW2 and TESO both have nice short sets of buttons needed for the abilities as well.
During combat I’ve gotten in the habit of moving with the mouse, by holding down both left and right mouse buttons at once. I’ve found that it gives me more fluid control. I only have to pause long enough to put it in position for AOE’s.
I never personally liked the default bindings. What I did was build mine from the ground up to something that had a better flow. It took a week or so to be comfortable executing rotations but once I got use to it I haven’t looked back.
This is what mine are. I wouldn’t suggest to copy and paste them, but it gives you an idea how far you can customize it.
S left strafe, D right strafe, Mouse 4 and 5 are forward and backwards
F E R G V for attack skills (respectively)
B N and M for utilities (thumb)
Profession skills Shift + (F R G V)
W heal, Q elite, T swap, A dodge, Z jump, C interact, ~ stow and space auto loot. (space is set to auto loot so it won’t interrupt my utility skills if accidentally pressed by my thumb)
I’ve also added a few rubber and raised keys to my keyboard to give it some structure.
Easily. Just use all of your fingers.
If you have issues with the default keybinds, just change them to fit your needs better.

WASD is pretty easy if you play shooters for years, like most people do.
I just changed the stuff around it quite a bit:
` Hero Panel
1 AoE Loot
Q Skill 1
2 Skill 2
3 Skill 3
E Skill 4
F Skill 5
Alt+Q Skill 6
Alt+2 Skill 7
Alt+3 Skill 8
Mouse 4 Skill 9
Mouse 7 Skill 10
Shift+Q Profession Skill 1
Shift+2 Profession Skill 2
Shift+3 Profession Skill 3
Shift+E Profession Skill 4
4 Auto-Run
R Dodge
G Look Behind
X Turn Around
Z Walk/Run Toggle
C Target Nearest
V Interact

Try this, it makes controlling your character much easier.
- Press F11 key to go to options.
- Check Free Camera in the options. Basically, it’s a sticky camera. The camera won’t move unless you move it.
- Use left click to move the camera.
- Set Q and E to Turn Left/Right.
Video here: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=327239870819509&l=1057124510914289664
Tips:
- If you use the Q and E keys while holding the right mouse button, it behaves like Strafe Left/Right instead of Turn, so you don’t need separate key binds for strafing.
- You can hold both left + right mouse buttons together to run and steer your character.
- Right click is currently bugged: it disables free camera. Left click enables free camera again.

I bought a Razer Naga for the skills. For the movement and other keys such as the interaction, targeting, weapon swap, etc.. I rested my left hand on the keyboard and set the controls for whatever keys fall naturally within my reach.
So I have qwes for movement. Spacebar for jump (hit with thumb)
~ for weapon swap
A for auto run
R for target
c,v,b,n for the profession F1, F2, F3, F4 keys. (Hit with thumb)
Dodge is on the 3rd mouse button as my index finger rests naturally on it while holding down the right mouse button while moving.
Obviously these won’t suit most people but everyone’s hands are a different size and degree of flexibility. You should select a layout that minimizes your weaknesses and takes advantages of your strengths.
ANet may give it to you.

nah it’s not just shooters, i’ve never played a shooter on the computer, it’s that pretty much every single flash game like miniclip games used these or the arrow keys back when i was a kid so yea
Mesmer is unfun to play against and does everything better than thieves.
Hoping those two get gutted with nerfs
imo the standard WASD is terrible. Setting up as ESDF is much more natural. That and LMB+RMB to run when I do need to use 1-4

So the Naga Hex is actually useful for people with tiny hands? I’ve been thinking about it, but since our local stores never have it I can’t test it, and I’m reluctant to just order it when it might not be worth it. I’d be so, so happy if this were a gaming mouse I can actually use comfortably.

I heard some online retailers have a good return policy. I know a mouse can be a tricky thing. I bought one mouse that felt great, only to find out my hand cramps after extended periods, so I had to get another gaming mouse. My hands are mid-sized so can’t help with suggestions either. Although I am using a Logitech g502 now.
While we are on the subject of keybindings, is there a way to bind to the right number pad on a keyboard? I have tried it and it still will only use the top number keys.

Could just be your software, I don’t have any issues with it. All of my UI interactions are bound on it from black lion to guild menu.
However, if you’re considering to play with the left hand for movements and right hand on number pad for skills I’ll have to warn you. There is a skill cap on playing like that limits you hard in PvP. The mouse is necessary for good gameplay.

Yep, it’s not much larger than a regular two-button-with-scroll-wheel mouse. I have it on one of those pads with a gel wrist rest at the front end. My hand’s close to 7" from base to middle finger tip and with the heel of my palm solidly on the gel my fingers reach to the ends of the left/right buttons with my thumb curving comfortably around the side. I rest my palm on the mouse, which meant getting used to how hot it gets over the Razer logo … but I’d say hands in the normal small range will have no problem with the HEX.

Hmm… my hands are a bit shorter (which is why I have been using the same model of tiny, tiny laptop mouse for years), but it sounds like ithe Naga Hex might just work.
Thanks for the info, I guess I’ll give it a try in the near future

Does it make a difference if you try it with the NUMLOCK light on or off?
I use the number pad in game and it works both on and off. It shows in the control options like:
1 (NUM)
2 (NUM)
etc
