It’s very hard not to listen to people when they shout out comments like the following and for some, should this be true, then it totally throws one’s intentions for the future out of whack.

I heard skill points whereto be converted to hero points, okay, I get that… I think, but, I also heard that Leveling Tomes of Knowledge were going to be removed as well. That, I do not know if it’s true or not, and it’s way to early to be speculating I think. I just wanna know if I am being trolled or not on that note. My husband and I, like many others I’ll assume, stockpile Tomes of Knowledge.

IF this is true, can someone please tell me why this feature is being taken away?

  • Skill points are being converted to crafting items for the Mystic Forge:

Old skill points in excess of those earned by leveling and skill challenges will be converted into crafting materials for the Mystic Forge. Items and activities that were previously repeatable sources of skill points will now also provide that same crafting material.

  • Unless I’ve missed it, there hasn’t been a dev statement on Tomes of Knowledge being removed. Given the change, though, it’d make sense to remove Scrolls of Knowledge, that currently grant skill points.

I had discussed yesterday with someone in-game that skill point scrolls were to be converted to crafting matts, but.. that’s neither here nor there.

All I know is, when my husband got wind of the new changes coming and the possible deletion of Tomes of Knowledge, after he has stocked piled a stack of them after so long, he… was not happy and pondered quitting.

I too, have about 70 of my own Tomes and I have to look at this in an objective way. The work it took (before the daily rewards system launch) will be negated completely. People like my husband, who have truly to receive and therefore hoard Tomes of Knowledge before the Daily Rewards would be getting nothing more than a slap in the face if they were taken away. All the work it took to get them… when they were so scarce to begin with before the Daily Rewards would be an insult to people like my husband. He feels, and I agree: He worked for this.

As far as I know, the tomes of knowledge will be kept in the game but will only be useable up to level 80. That way PvP only people can still get to level 80 and get the minimum 400 Hero points a level 800 leveled only with tomes can have. Using a tome after level 80 will not advance the Mastery bar.

“The masteries seen in the demo are just the tip of what masteries will be available at launch, and the team will have more surprises for players. We wanted to know if all those consumables, like Tomes of Knowledge and Writs of Experience, would help players unlock all of these masteries faster. The short answer is that they won’t. The experience bar is going away and is being replaced by the mastery training bar. This training bar is in no way tied to experience, but fills up by going out and doing stuff in the world. So any item that gives you experience won’t help you train masteries.”

I’m genuinely curious, why would you quit over something fairly innocuous that has been stockpiled? What had been planned for such a large number of Tomes? I largely disregard them tbh.

What does it matter what had been planned? We all know what the Tomes do, so… really, do you need ask what the plans are?

We’ll just say all in all, my Husband is not happy. Between the two of us, I’m the gamer in the house and he has little time to play. Stockpiling these tomes to make any future progression he makes in the game easier for him to do is something that should be entirely left to his discretion, as with the introduction of these tomes made that an option for him to do.

He read over the new trait changes coming, he doesn’t like it (which, he’s entitled to feel the way he feels, regardless of my opinion). He’s afraid that with the rumor of the removal of tomes, he’s angry as what he has understood of this new trait system; his being a tank will be largely affected. His health pool is greatly contributed to how his places his traits, after this new Specialization Primer, he livid because he think we’ll all have to buy new armor.

That having been said, I cannot disregard his concern over the rumor of these tomes. I hate to say this but it really does feel like ArenaNet is revamping the entire game system on us, and… a few of us… just wanna know… why? That’s all.

Why listen to unfounded rumors, rather than official information? As far as has been disseminated, ToKs will allow a character to gain a level. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hence my inquiry is there was any truth to the rumor. You can really deny that all “unfounded rumors” are false in nature. Most of what I have learned in this game came from word-of-mouth. It would have been silly of me not to double check it and just believe the rumor and pass it on as if it were fact.

I’m just trying to understand why it would be an issue. If the point is to feedback to Anet (if it is true and nothing has been said yet at all) that you are unhappy about it, stating why would help the cause so much more. Which you sort have in your follow up post (although I still disgaree any issue is at hand, but that’s a different point)

I would completely ignore any rumours as well. Having looked over the dulfy notes and read over the blog in my detail, many rumours have been debunked utterly since they are based on supposition and overflating the actual facts. If you are genuinely concerned over this, I would wait until the actual details are put forward by Anet themselves. I too thought it was an entire revamp, then I read up further on the details and it isn’t at all. A tidy, some streamlining and some future proofing, but not a fully game/build breaking overhaul.

Ive no clue what plans are for ToK (since I barely use them), but until Anet say they are changing, as far as I and anyone should be concerned, they are not

No need to worry, they covered this yesterday on the livestream. Tomes will still continue to grant a level as they do now.

Yup, tell that to my husband who think he will have to spend heaping amounts of Gold to redo his armor after spending heaping amounts to get it the way it currently is.

I have to say, his curiosity of this whole matter is valid in my mind because if that is the pending possibility for him, he would be livid if his Tomes were taken away too, lol.

FWIW, the stat changes will affect those who chose different stats on their gear than they did with traits, but is less likely to matter to those whose traits and gear contained the same stats. If your husband’s “tank” inclinations extended to gear, then the conversion should add more of those tank stats to the gear. If he used traits to get stats that were different from those on gear (example, using Power, Precision, Ferocity gear, but traiting for Toughness, Healing Power, Vitality and Boon Duration), then he would have to replace some of the gear pieces to have the same balance.

And it should be noted, you may actually want to be looking to change your upgrade slot items and not your gear itself. It’s hard to say how much will have to be changed because we don’t know what the point increases are going to look like, but you’re definitely looking at either a shift in runes/gems, or changing out a few but not all pieces of gear.

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Until you see info in print from ANet ignore them. Remember the “you’ll need to use Gems to identify an Unidentified Dye”?

People like winding up others when info is scarce or difficult/annoying to find (4 hour Twitch, summary please beyond “its a work in progress, stuff will change”).

Most likely the tomes will advance you a level if you are below level 80 and after that they will do nothing.

If leveling again after 80 fills a mastery bar, I can see the tome doing the same post 80. That fits with what was said in the zam article previously linked.

ANet said recently that tomes will not help fill the mastery bar as level 80 chars will no longer gain exp but something else (unnamed) that acts similar to exp, is gained by doing things and trains the mastery bar.
