Q:

I recently bought an armor skin, and i thought it worked like outfits. I need a certain item to put it on the armor. I found them in the shop, but i don’t have any gems left. Is there a way to get these items, or get my gems back?

Are you talking about Transmutation charges? You can get them free in game. Completely explore a city on any one of your chars and you’ll get one. You’ll usually get one if you completely explore a map and you can get them from sPvP and WvW reward tracks.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

you can get transmutation charges for free by completing maps, especially the city maps.

One way that’s boring but relatively fast is to make a char to only explore the cities, delete and repeat. Over time though I suggest you do the PvP dailies. You’ll also get exotic weapons and armor as well.

in a bit more detail, you can unlock skins, or you can find skin items. if your object is an equipable item, then it’s an item in itself, binding it to your acount will unlock the skin permanently, and at the cost of a transmutation charge, you can use the skin.
The other version is the item Skin, which isn’t an equipable item, but a consumable skin. In this case, you don’t need a transmutation charge. Using it will consume the skin item and replace the skin of the equiped piece.

Don’t forget: if he purchased armor skins from the Gem Store, they don’t need Transmutation Charges the first time. The item you get in the mail works for free the first time. Just double-click it and apply to the armor you want. However after you use the items you get in the mail, they disappear and you will need Transmutation Charges to use that skin going forward.

Yeah I thought of that. However he said he needed T charges so presumably he used the free charge that came with the item already, possibly on a low level armor, and now found out he can’t reapply without the T charges.
