Congrats Arena.Net!
Clearly the “tech” guys didnt played too much the game.
LOL Time magazine top 10 list along with person or the year list are junk. Any magazine that put Adolf Hitler, Mao and Stalin as persons of the year should be looked at with suspicion.
Anyway did you see the list now that list is funny but then again aside from Planetside 2 and Black Op’s 2012 was a crappy year for games IMHO.
A big congratulations, Anet! Well done!
Grats. That’s Time.

I don’t read Time but I know a little about it’s history. Time’s "Person of the year " is supposed to feature the person that they believe impacted the world the most in a given year. It isn’t always a popularity hug-fest.

You do realize that “Person of the ….” is not necessarily a positive thing, right? It’s only someone who had the biggest affect on the world during the time period they are talking about.
Anyway, AC3, Dishonored and LBP (which is a very entertaining game) were all on that list, so I don’t think that makes for a crappy year.

well, how many people are on the forum? 25% at most? How many of those hate the game with a passion? 15%? Then how many people are actually playing it and enjoying it or thinking that it’s a good game after playing it for a while and moving on to play something else, just to come back to it months later? 85%? Really this game sold 6 million copies. I am happy with it. I’m seeing a lot of in game community being happy with it. I’m not seeing the forum users as a majority there. Really by the sales and being a quickly rising second most popular MMO after WoW I would say that it’s more likely that the complainers are a minority.

I also like to pull out random numbers from my sleeve to back up my theories
Look, I am 26, so that means the planet is 8000 years old.
Its nice that the game sold 6 mil copies. But some of those copies were ppl from my guild, my friends, my family. I am the only one who at least logs in once in a while. Other ppl here see the same trend. So dont tell me that only few % are unhappy.
If we have 25% coming to forums and 15% of them hating it so we can expect the same ratio from ppl that dont come to the forums. So out of 75% 45% not liking it. In total that makes 60% out of total not liking the game and thats more than a half. (NOTE I think this is waaay too much, but just because I think that the game has issues doesnt mean I “hate” the game").
Congrats! Nice award.

If they would dislike it, they would probably come to forums. The population and the speed of new messages being created does not make me believe that we have 6 million people in the forums. I would say 1/4th at most. All I’m saying is that if the game got on that list it has a right to be there. It doesn’t mean that people who rank it don’t play it because all the forum community thinks that it’s a bad bad game. Every single MMO has its own problems, but if you look at the forums you would think that there’s not a single good game anymore.
While I hold my reservations on their development direction in the last month, and some unnerving rumors about “realignments”, I still think at its core Guild Wars 2 is fantastic.
1-80 I absolutely love. Leveled 3 to 80, and my fourth is 71. At level cap, the fun drops off a bit, but its still not bad.
Just…some design decisions and “Oh we didnt see that coming” have me worrying whether or not they can handle an MMO like this for the long haul…if they are up to the task.
But regarding the thread at hand, congrats.
Being named by Time is pretty good. That’ll get a fair bit of main stream attention going in to the holidays.
G4 would have also been nice to add to the list of media accolades, but it looks like GW2 is getting hammered by Dishonored (http://goo.gl/wiEja).
I also don’t even think the game is being considered by Giant Bomb, Polygon or IGN, which is really sad. If you listen to their podcasts they pretty much say outright that they didn’t bother giving the game a fair shake because they are just over MMOs; however, the reasons they are over them are because of a lot of traditional mechanics that GW2 revamped or removed. A few of the guys even had variations of “It looks good but after SwTor…” comments prefacing their dismissal.
C’est la vie. Maybe more non-gaming specific media that aren’t yet jaded to the genre as a whole will give Anet some positive page space.
Edit: As of 12/7 GW2 is now beating Dishonored, but I am not sure if that even means anything since many people thought we were voting to choose G4’s game of the year and they announced that a few days ago as Borderlands 2. Have us vote for GoTy but then announce one anyways before voting is over? /smh.
Also IGN at least nominated GW2 as a contender. So that was nice to hear.

Came across my first bug today, where a bad buff (blindness) kept repeating it’s cool down. 1 bug in a week of solid play. If it had been any other game I would have come across a shed-load of bugs.
Well done and congratulations Arena.net on a game that is worthy of GOTY.

Grats.
now look around the subforums and see the actual amount of bugs.
Some of them – many of them profession related – were being reported since Betas and never reported. Or a PS bug that made it impossible for anyone to finish one of the lines for over a months. The fact that you don’t see it or it doesn’t affect you doesn’t mean it’s not there – it is, in a great, serious multitude.

Yeah seriously…. most big titles aside from maybe COD:BO2 didn’t nearly deliver. Actually there’s a few indie games this year that were pretty good… Hotline Miami is kinda quirky and a throwback to the 80s, but good story and fun. Walking Dead wasn’t bad either and actually delivers more on the “your actions have consequences later on” more than the entire Mass Effect series.
HOORAY! Good job and gratz to ArenaNet! Guild Wars 2 really is a gem.
Of course, that’s where I would have put GW2 too but I wasn’t expecting gaming journalists to do the same.
I wonder if this means we’ll be seeing new players showing up after the holidays as people ask for the game for a gift
Clearly the “tech” guys didnt played too much the game.
Clearly you’re butthurt that people hold different opinions than you do?
Yeah, big congratulations on the achievement!
Might just see it pop-up on IGN GOTY for 2k12 =D

TBH, this game has more than enough bugs, massive laggy events, and loot that fails. Then when something fails, support sends messages telling people they don’t qualify for rewards after fighting through a 4hour laggy events with multiple disconnects. And to top it off, I’ll probably be infracted for saying this and have the post deleted. How can this game be rewarded by anyone? lol
I have to say um no to these companies like the wall street journal, times, and other n on industry standard journalism putting there two cents in the ring in which they have no talent or vision.

Irony right there. =p
When did Time become a game review thing? Oo
The game is worthy of the praise. There are several ideas in Guild Wars 2 that I hope the MMO community adopt, like letting everyone get XP from a monster, or allowing us to raise people who are downed. I have met more people in this game because I am put in situations where helping someone benefits us both than I have in all other MMOs I have played over the last seven years combined.
Yeah, big congratulations on the achievement!
Might just see it pop-up on IGN GOTY for 2k12 =D
I’m sorry, nothing to do with this topic, but why type “2k12”? It’s the same amount of keystrokes as “2012”. Seriously… what is wrong with people these days?
On topic, um, yay for ANet? How many games get named “Game of the Year” in various mediums every single year? Yeah, thought so. Yes, this is a great game, but if it was a monthly subscription game, I wouldn’t be playing it still.

More like what’s your problem?
Pessimistically responding to someone like that, sure. If you don’t agree. But i don’t even see the use of this negativity from your side?
Is your life that much of a complete failure that you have to dive behind the computer because your entire life is a mess?
Please.
Oh, and sorry. I’m not natively english.
It’s easier to pronounce 2-k-12 rather than Two-Thousand and Twelve.
Same goes for the name of IGN’s ‘’IGN GOTY Nominee 2012 (GW2)’’ Which is what it’s called when they got nominated.
So whatever man.

Sorry. In my opinion, it appears that you seem to be butthurt due to a magazine holding a different opinion than what you hold.
Also my post would’ve been ironic if, you know, I disagreed with poster’s opinion. Pity I didn’t.

Because “fun” is subjective. I have fun with the game despite the stupid bugs the game has. People have different opinions. I respect the fact that you have your own thoughts, but please don’t go around assuming everyone sees the game through the same perspective as you do.

Time Magazine. Since when are they Subject Matter Experts on Video Games?
Sagardon Kahn – Guardian
Hagalaz Kahn – Warrior
Congratulations!!
Proud member of the Blackgate community.
And thank you for making what I consider to be the best video game ever!
Yeah GW2 was a lot of peoples first video game ever. That’s who it was advertized to, hence only 2m sales.
And thank you for making what I consider to be the best video game ever!

not really.
a) it made 6 million sales, not 2 million
b) there are some hardcore gamers here and people of all age groups if you haven’t noticed.
Guild Wars 2 provides content for a nice variety of players, everything from casuals to the more hardcore players (no I do not mean those gear grind seeking panzies) can find something to do.
Character Building: No I do not mean anything to do with gear, what I mean is that Guild Wars 2 needs to do more with things outside of combat. They have the character attirbutes of Charisma, Dignity, and Fercoity, but do little to nothing with them; why not make them a mechanic actually used in interacting with the world? They need to more with this kind of stuff.
Waypoints: way too many of them. My argument for this is that there is no real traveling to get to places and as such a ton of potential content is skipped. The game just becomes psuedo-instanced; why even have an open world game at this point?
LFG tool: Wait, let me explain first: I don’t mean an auto-grouping tool, but something more along the lines of the gw2lfg.com website where you can see groups actively looking for members and what they are looking to do, and then have an option to PM and/or just join them. There is a very basic and almost useless lfg in the contacts list, it lacks the detail needed to be a proper tool.
Open World Scaling: this needs fine tuning. Mob spawning needs to be tweaked and not allow for seemingly instantaneous respawn (unless it makes sense, i.e.; in an enemy encampment at least makes sense).
The larger events should be revamped and fine tuned too; scaling needs to be based on the number of players and focus on splitting groups up into smaller units (i.e.: Spawning a “destroy the siege weapons” event a decent distance away that bombards and is considered part of the main event). This really only needs to be done to the larger events and a special select few others.
Open World General: Chests should have a decent chance at giving rare mats like ectos (maybe something like a 10% chance), add Boss/Champion Bounties (maybe even just make champs drop a special token once a day per champ, to be traded in for stuff), do more with the Three Orders, etc.
If they get working on stuff like that; I would definitely say that the Gw2 is game of the year hands down.
I guess, in my opinion, they just need to work on the details and then move on to fine tuning the game; they have the general scope of things pretty well laid out. The world is beautiful, alive, and great to travel through.

I would say, this game still as work to do, and alot of work to deserve such prizes.
It is an awesome game already, but when we talk about “longevity” of this MMO… There’s an big fail, since the actual status (especially about Grind) VS what this game promissed it’s an big distance.
An true revolution of MMO style would convert grind into FUN, GW2… didn’t.
Asura thing.
well deserved and i hope to see more of these rewards

Yes congrats for being the top video game choice in a news magazine. Its really too bad about the VGA and not winning a thing …… Maybe next time
Yes congrats for being the top video game choice in a news magazine. Its really too bad about the VGA and not winning a thing …… Maybe next time
And yet Time’s choices have more sensibility than that of the VGA’s.
There’s some flaws with the VGA choices as well as their current set up:
1) DLC has to either be changed to “content expansions” and include expansion packs to MMO’s just like the DLC for single player games, OR…there has to be a Game Expansions section added (I’m talking about head to head to head Storm Legion, Riders of Rohan, and Mists of Panderia).
2) Borderlands 2 has only 4-player online co-op, yet it won the “Best Multi-player Game”. Honestly, with it having ONLY a co-op, it shouldn’t even be in that category and instead replaced with yet another shooter…or another MMO, or something with real multi-player in it.
3) Best Downloadable Game is redundant to Best Indie Game, thus they should be merged.
4) Best Driving Game should be under Best Individual Sports game, another redundancy.
5) If they have a “Best Graphics” section, they need a “Best Artistic Design” section as well. Journey would have won that, or many other more “artistic” games than just graphically enhanced games.
Overall it seemed to be the same ol’, same ol’ from the VGA’s. More than anything it seems like a flashy chance to get some actor, nearly unrelated to gaming in any way possible, to stand up on stage and push bad jokes. This year, Samuel L. Jackson pushed not bad jokes, but instead crap puns and references to his past movies. Only really great thing of the show was the live musical orchestras that played video game music during interval parts.
Being on Time Magazine’s list as top #1 game of 2012 above Call of Duty, above Halo 4, above that joke Boringlands 2, and other games only says how great the game really is. But it doesn’t need an award to say that, as it’s known already.
P.S. I’m sure Time factors in things like value of content vs. costs (minus subscription). After all, it’s mentioned in the guy’s spot that Torchlight 2 is better than Diablo 3 because it’s same gaming style at 1/3rd the price. That’s beside how fun the game is, how the combat is so interesting, that going back to anything else is nearly impossible, and how explorer friendly the game’s world is.

I m sure customer support alone took a big hit to GW2 consideration as the number one game alone but hey the next time I go to buy a new video game I ll be sure to look at what Time says is a good buy or good play. Sorry you are so hurt over the VGA to me, all games have the supporters and haters. Me I dont hate GW2 just saying they need to still look in to fixing alot of things and do things better.
PS I guess Time didnt take customer support in to their consideration when looking at their number one game
Luckly for GW2 – Diablo 3 was a failure (relativly speaking).
Congrats Anet
Congratulations on the award – no arguments from me, this is certainly the best game I’ve played. My family and I are having a lot of fun and will be here for a long time to come.
This level of mainstream attention might even help us to tempt a few more real-life non-gamer friends to give it a go.
The Path Least Travelled, Gunnar’s Hold
How this game becomes best of the year, I can’t get it. Most of old games are far better. And yes, Diablo 3 was a big failure, no matter of millions copies sold. But GW2 is a failure too. Best part of this game is advertising. Seems gaming industry is in a huge crisis, cause I can invent better game from GW2 before noon.
