There’s definately a few things here and there that you are going for (weapon/armor skins, etc.), but I think GW2 is really the first MMO to forget progression and just go for gameplay. I am one of those guys that could do the same thing over and over again and if it was fun the first time, it’ll be fun again.
I have a lot more fun playing this game than any other MMO- emphasis on “playing.” I do not care if I get legendaries, I do not care if I get any rewards actually, once I am decently geared. I really enjoy just grouping up with people and running dungeons/events. That’s what’s fun for me, and that’s why this game appeals so much, as even without groups, I join many others simply by doing an event.
Unfortunately, I seem to be one of the few. Most people want “progression” and goals to accomplish. I think that’s well and good, but it’s not why I play MMORPGs. I play to have fun joining others to accomplish short-term goals, with the possible long-term goal being a side venture.

“seems from people’s post”

That statement right there tells me that you are letting the negativity of the forum make your mind up for you instead of trying to gauge the game with your own opinion.

So with that in mind, no you shouldn’t try to play again, because you already accepted the opinions of others as a reason not to.

Bear in mind that all complaints are likely to be drastically exagerated.

Yes you will have to grind fractals if you want Ascended gear. But it provides no benefit outside of Fractcals so you don’t need to bother unless you want to do the dungeon a lot anyway, and if you do you probably won’t consider it grinding.

Other than that they haven’t added anything that could be called grind which wasn’t in the game at launch.

I wouldn’t know how balance is in WvW though. I’ve been too busy with the main game to even try it so far.

Edit: I assume from your post that you’ve played GW2 before and therefore already bought the game. There is no subscription so why not just play it and see for yourself whether you want to stick with it? It’s not like you’ve got anything to lose.

You can grind fractals for ascended gear which again people have stated is nor worth the time and effort unless you consider grinding dungeons as “fun”.

You can grind for farm to make mats for legendaries, either grind mobs to dungeons for gold, basically grinding again.

That’s all the PvE content done.

lol, not exactly.

Speaking as an almost purely PVE player my main focus at the moment is 100% map completion, actually seeing everything on the map (which is different to checking off all the points), finding and completing all the jump puzzles and doing every path of every dungeon at least once.

After that I might start working on some of the achivements (the ones I won’t have gotten along the way).

And that’s just the stuff I’m working on. There’s plenty of other content which isn’t just grinding for gear out there too.

At least making coffee would get you something worthwhile for all the grinding. Namely the coffee

The thing is my friend that isn’t what people are looking for when they want challenging, engaging Player Vs Environment content

Sure some people might like running around the map to complete zones but that isn’t everyones cup of tea. 90% of boss battles in this game are a mix of dodge red circles and zerg the boss.. I can think of about 3 engaging bosses. The fact that all end game PvE content can be completed so easily with any pug shows the lack of challenge and engaging content.

I remember in other games, when new end game content came out like an equivanlent to fractals, it took the player-base months to figure out a strategty to fight the boss it wasn’t done in a day.

No sub fee, fire it up and try it. Leave again if you don’t have a good time. Don’t let other dictate your gaming decisions based on random forum posts.

Not everything you read will be true.

I find ascended gear makes no difference as its not a big enough bonus to care about. People blow things out of proportion a lot.

If you love dungeons yes rejoin the population.
But if you dont like them dont come and save some time and aggravation.

Open world/Events – dead (orr as well) Anet nerfed plinx and on top of that every open world loot drop has been nerfed to porous bones. I am barely exaggerating – doing explore this weekend all I got was a few bones and blood and porous bones for 10hours of work and killing.
You get 5 blues for jormag not worth the 20 mins.

Pvp- toast outside a few hours cant get anything.
WvW – stale and old but added a breakout event to help the underpowered.

The games population has taken a huge nose dive especially after Nov 15 and every decision they have made created issue and really got under peoples skin.

New content in Jan/Feb – but there is the gear grind and the ascend gear and the market manipulation going on as well. depends what you are looking for.

The population hasn’t taken a huge nosedive it’s just dropped down a little… Though after christmas it seems like there’s a ton of new people coming in…. Games like this always start off massive and then even out a little later on and it’s going to stay that way….

100% agree on the drop rates though you can’t farm due to the DR and horrid bugs that are plaguing some of the players magic find functioning in revers and DR not resetting The drop rates themselves seem to be bugged as well but that could just be because the nerfed drop rates….. Getting anything decent from the dragon/big orr events is like winning the powerball meaning that just won’t happen…

They haven’t fixed anything (hyper-nerfed rare drops, for instance, or the massive focus on constantly grinding FotM) so there’s no reason to come back.

Oh well, as long as the no-lifer hardcore grinders are having fun mindlessly mashing buttons, it’s mission accomplished (given that ArenaNet sold us on the game being extremely grindy and catering to people that love extremely super-grindy games – /sarcasm).

Play it if you want to. I play it because I enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it, why bother playing? I do think these forums tend to over-exaggerate the negative points of the game, but really all it comes down to is: do you want to play? Then play! Don’t pay attention to what anyone else says. Maybe try joining a different server if you like PvE (I recently switched to Tarnished Coast from Blackgate and love it. What a difference that has made in the experience for me!)

OP, anyone saying GW2 is grindy never really played GW2 as it’s meant to – they simply tried to work in GW2, which for the record isn’t really viable.
I’m nearing 1k hours in and I’ve yet to grind anything, that’s proof enough that there is no required grind.

Why play you ask? To have fun.
If you play with any other reason in mind you’ll hardly enjoy GW2.
Simply, you login and decide how to have fun.
None of what GW2 offers is fun to you? Play another game.

You play GW2 if you find the combat and contents fun, if you don’t you quit.
If you want a long-term goal there are many – whether you want to grind them like a robot or get there by doing things for fun is up to you.

While I think it’s great that you’re having a blast and haven’t had to grind at all. However, not everyone enjoys every aspect of the game.

Like me, I enjoy dungeon content. But it seems like dungeon content is overly grindy for the sake of getting some tokens or ascended gear. This is something that AN had expressed they didn’t want to do but somehow did anyhow.

I also want to craft a legendary some day. This is also very grindy. Rightfully so, but there’s a great deal of grind throughout the game. Many of the aspects of the game that many players enjoy in MMOs.

I don’t do fractals often, not doing them hasn’t slowed me down from enjoying the game. Just got my third character to 80 and set up with exotics, getting more gold than I did doing event chains in Orr (pre Nov 15 patch drops) by doing other things in game…

There was a beta test for a different type of culling to address the ‘invisible’ players in WvW and updates continue on this front, several drop rate and balance changes have been made based on player feedback (Omnomberry drop spawn rate vs Vanilla Bean rate as one example.)

A minor interface change was rolled out to crafting, then reverted based on player feedback.

A new tier of gear has been introduced, and in future updates that gear will be available in zones outside of Fractals. Weather this has anything to do with player feedback about a feeling of ‘lack of progression’ or not is up for debate.

The orbs have been removed from WvW for balance reasons and because they were frequently being exploited.

Balance changes have been made to Thief and Mesmer that closed some of the frequent abuses in WvW (not all, but that’s a whole long other thread.)

A list of broken open world events and bugged personal story steps longer than my arm have been fixed, some bugged events remain.

Fractals of the Mist has been introduced, including a level that was concieved on Rum & Coke, hats off to the dev that shares a joy of my favorite mixed drink.

Southsun cove offers up a different design approach to max level difficulty than Orr. Some people like it, others don’t. If you hated Orr, you may like Southsun.

There are new crafting recipies that offer new stat combinations. Also new recipies for new exotic items.

Out in the world there are some new mini-dungeons, I haven’t had a chance to run any of them down yet, but I’ve heard they’re fun.

For every complaint on the forums, there are a dozen people in game playing and enjoying. And half the ‘complaints’ are really just feedback from people who enjoy the game and want to share their ideas for making a good game better.

Welcome back, hope you enjoy your time.

You know why a grind was introduced with the ascended backs?

BECAUSE YOU ASKED FOR IT.

From 2 weeks after the game was released, up until the announcement of the lost shores update, the forums was nothing but comments of “I’m at endgame and I’m bored cause I’m level 80 with full exotics and I don’t have anything to do except go for a legendary, I need something to work towards”

You asked anet for a grind because you whined about being 80 with full exotics and nothing to do, anet then introduces a grind and you throw it in their faces going “WE DONT WANT THIS!”

Anet make Rev great again.

Oh yeah, that means ZERO grind in all aspects of the game? Could you possibly expect an MMO with no grind? None whatsoever? Leveling is a grind. Gearing is a grind. Crafting is a grind etc etc. Without grind you’d have finished the game in a few hours and hopped back onto World of Pandas, where coincidentally almost every aspect of the game is a grind.

Compare this to GW1 and Pandacraft, the grind is so minimal. If you’re aiming for Legendaries and soon ascended gear, ofcourse there will be a grind. They’re not going to spoon feed you every step of the way. You have to work for it.

Still waiting for the things I love about GW1.

I actually don’t mind a bit of a grind and I have never shied away from a bit hard yakka…what I don’t like is being told one thing and exactly the opposite happens….and they will just get away with it. The bait and switch strategy seems common to most game companies these days.
