Found this in the game archive. The plans for a console release may still be alive and well…

They have been there since the beta, but I wouldn’t read too much into it. There’s also an “awesome smiley” gif in the dat and descriptions about all kinds of unimplemented guild upgrades(wvw spies, guild leader portal, etc), which tell us that you can’t reliably predict the future based on what you mine from the files.

Wouldn’t surprise me they would release a console version for the next generation consoles, since they are the same processor architecture as the computers we use. All it would take then is a new interface and controls.

And you can already use a controller for the game with some clever remapping and the action-mod.

They could simply be placeholder icons for an up coming/planned/scrapped controller patch. Many PC games in recent years have built in 360 controller support, and given personal experience, I’d say that native support for the 360 controller wouldn’t be that hard to do in GW2.
