Consumable: Profession Change?
Critical Impact [Crit]
I thought profession changes, along with race changes were two things they said they absolutely would not do?
Have to see if I can find this info again now…
Race change is one thing, but profession change is just a ridiculous idea and would never be implemented.
Race / profession changes are one of the few things I would actually buy gems for
I would like this as well. Although there would need to be some questions answered.
What happens to soulbound gear for that character? Does it become account bound? Does it stay character bound but unequips if incompatible (eg. switching from Guardian to Mesmer would unequip the armor)?

From what I heard, profession makes more sense bc you just reset all of the skills and refund traits/skills. Whereas changing race would require resetting you’re entire personal story and more difficult to do on the tech side. In my case, either would solve my dilemma.

Why? It’s a good idea.
Profession change is one thing, but race change will NEVER happen due to the infinite amount of problems it would cause with stories, NPC conversation triggers, achievements, etc.
I’ve been under the impression that there was/is a rumor that Anet may offer profession changes in the future. Is there any warrant to this rumor?
I have a lvl 80 ranger, thief and engineer. Each a different race. I would like to swap them around, but the thought of scrapping and re-leveling 3 max characters is depressing. I would much rather pay for a profession change than have to re-level 3 characters.
Profession, much like race, is tied deep into your character creation. Because of this, it’s highly doubtful that they’ll offer up a “profession change”. The only option you have is to create and level new characters. That is why in an MMORPG, making characters is a HUGE decision choice that has to be done wisely. This goes same for your mid-leveling Faction choice between Vigil, Whispers, and Priory.
Profession change also causes tons of problem. Light armor class to heavy class, what to do with the light armors? Weapon?
It’s great in ideal. I’d love to have that option too. But in reality, it’s just too much trouble. It would be even easier to give you a consumable that instance lvl to 80, than implement a profession change.

That’s not really true. You answer a question depending on profession, but that changes a piece of starting equipment or your pet, something like that.
As for the problems, it’s not really that many. Automatically unequip all items and weapons before the change occurs. If they’re not usable by the new profession, you simply can’t equip them anymore just like anything else. For skills, just refund all the points. Anything else?

Only if they offer it for free to anybody that has a lvl 80 Ranger.
So, have devs said nothing on the matter? I really wish they would, one way or another.
If they are never going to add them, then I’ll just get on with remaking my toons. If they are, I may hold out.

Frankly, I think profession and race changing just causes way too many problems and not enough return to be implemented. If you want to play as another race or class, just roll another race or class.
I really hate the whole idea of “Okay so you want to play a different profession, just make an alt and start from scratch.” I mean leveling to 80 once was fun, but now that I have seen the entire world, done all the hearts, etc. leveling another one to 80 is just plain boring unless i spend the 30+ gold to craft it to 80.

Transmute them or salvage them.

Well there is a consumable that gets you to level 20 instantly. Buy a char slot..use that consumable and craft the rest or something. May take a week at the most..
I think many of you guys have it backward. It’s not hard for the game to change your skills, stats and to which armor you can wear is likely as easy as flipping an on/off switch like how they did with armor preview (not saying it’s easy though). I mean, the game changes your stats and skills by picking up environmental objects, transformations or participating in special events. Changing what your character can do is easy.
Changing races is likely not possible though. Not only does it change the character model/animations, it changes NPC interactions, stories, home instance, etc.
That said, I don’t honestly care for either option.
It’s kind of sad that one invested so many gems item/unlocks (Bag slot and infinite gathering tools etc.) on one character but later on wished it has another profession. Time like this would be nice to have a profession changing option.
If it’s not too time/resource consuming I would really hope they can offer this option.
Possible In-game Economic Benefit:
Maybe this will bring more profit on gems sale and maybe this can reduce the number of profession complaints too. Additionally an possible chain reaction of this would be that it can create an indirect gold sink. For example. A character that was previously using medium armor are now changed to use heavy armor will be forced to use in-game gold to buy a new set of armor.

and what of profession type specific gear(heavy/medium/light) that are soul bound to a particular character you want to change profession with? what of the used skill points? some of personal story rewards are class(or armor type) specific too, including the starter gear.
yes it IS possible, but is it easy to change all those variables? NO.
Also, with how ArenaNet is so proud of their personal story, i don’t think race or profession change is going to happen.
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.

I think instead of a full on profession change, it will be more likely that they will reintroduce an old GW1 mechanic, secondary professions. As they were changeable, that will open things up a little, though I don’t know how well it will work with the game’s current mechanics.

I actually really do hope they do something, but maybe just to make it easier on them, able to change profession on the same type ex; Heavy warrior to guardian and visa versa
