And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
Well as a game programmer he’s not paid to be nice to people. It wouldn’t hurt to be more polite tho.
It’s not his tone or anything. It’s just this quote:
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug.
-Bill
That can’t be anything other than a fumbling with words or a lie. There’s no way for game developers to defend an entire items existence as a bug. That just… Can’t be true from a coding standpoint.
Personally, I’m fine with his tone. It’s that lie that bugs me. Although I am fully aware that he likely meant it differently.
IAnd yes, there are a tremendous drain on resources especially when you have a large guild group of about 100 doing world events and 50-70 players pop an ember. I have to put my graphics on the lowest setting every day for post reset activities.
But a right fix to this client-side performance issue (if it was the issue) would be to hardcap the amount of high-poly models for summons in the code and show low-poly non-animated models for others. Like LOD and characters models. sliders for which exist in game settings.
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug.
The bringer of bad news,
-Bill
I pretty sure what you really meant to say was that players are using these consumables in a way that was completely unforeseen by the developers; not that item existence was a bug. Right?
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug. The decision to throw cooldowns on them were for server performance/stability as the patch notes said, not for balance. Period. This was something that was long overdue.
Think of it this way: Between the embers and whistle, those items were effectively doubling/tripling the amount of players active in a map.
As for the Charrzooka, I’m not sure what the reasoning behind that change was. That wasn’t part of the change to summons, or at least that I’m aware of.
The bringer of bad news,
-Bill
You know what’s really long overdue? Bug fixes to classes. But instead you worry about embers and whistles.
Sounds like you have your priorities skewed.
I wish they’d put the dodo-bird transform and mini morph in PvP on a 120 hour timer. They suck.
Things like those consumables should be gimmicks, nothing more.
If you’re can’t see that the change is needed for the game to function better, then you’re either blind or in denial.
Really? Think outside the box for a sec.
They could for example have increased the price of them at the vendor. A higher price means less people will find them worth buying, and the ones who do buy them will save them for when they really need them.
They could have had a maximum amount of summoned companions in a map, so it couldn’t get filled up and affected server performance.
There are other, better solutions to this problem than a 30 minute cooldown, and if you can’t see that, you’re either blind or in denial.
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug. The decision to throw cooldowns on them were for server performance/stability as the patch notes said, not for balance. Period. This was something that was long overdue.

I could give a rip about what Anet “giveth” and what Anet “taketh away”, however what I do give a rip about is what I spend on it. I had just finished loading my toons with 30 gold worth of pets and potions {adds up when you have 8 toons} and now they have become worthless. GIVE ME A REFUND NOW! I am sick of spending my hard earned gold on gear, weapons, pets, and tonics that become worthless soon after I buy them.

Don’t get angry at the messenger man… Instead, work with anet through the forums and think of creative solutions to the problem instead of accusing someone of being disrespectful.
If they change they’re mind, it’s a bug.
Clones shattering? Bug.
Consumables? Bug.
Death Shroud? Bug.
No Grind? Bug.
Probably even the manifesto was just a bug.

Stop beating around the bush.
The items were op, and they were not meant to be spammed in combat like that.
The faster people admit it the faster you’ll move along.I got zero problem with Anet saying so & making a change. Spouting bs to a paying customer is a different story. The faster they admit it the faster everybody will move along.
If people would stop kittening about every single good change they make because they had to nerf something in the process then I would expect ANet to treat us players with better respect.
The thing is you (and by you I mean a lot of people on the forums) as a paying customer (a kittenty one for that matter) for some reason expect to be able to trash talk the devs every time you (again, by you I mean a lot of players) don’t like something. Honestly if I were them I’d file out bans in bulks. Remember it’s a mmo and you are paying for their services, you don’t own anything in this game, and they can choose to terminate their services at any time.I have never done “Teq”, PvP, WvW, or any Dungeon in this game.
I just like to meander through open-world-pve and level up my nine characters slowly.
I use the consumables to aid my solo play but only where they fit in with the character i am currently playing.
My elementalist specialises in fire magic summoning and i like to use both fire elementals all the time, having a third through the use of a consumable was like christmas for me ( i have a fire imp mini and they share the same animations, all 4 flying summoned fire creatures flapping flames around her).
Why is my casual play nerfed because of something happening somewhere else?
How is this a “good change” for me?
MMO, mass multiplayer online. If you want everything to resolve around yourself, please go play a singleplayer game. They can’t fix a game keeping in mind every single player’s needs.
No need to state the obvious, i think i know that already.
I asked how you thought this was a “good change”?
i shall also edit some extra into this post:
your tone is overly dismissive and confrontational, this isnt a battle.
there are several other ways to have altered these items, the worst way was chosen.
they could simply be culled via the graphics settings and made unable to be summoned on certain maps and instances.
this is just a clunky quickfix that has done more harm than good.
I apologize for the tone, this forum pulls out the worst of me. The thing is I stopped beying a nice person here because people love to bash and bash and bash again.
Why I think it’s a good change?
1. Because it trivializes content
2. Puts heavy load on the graphics
I do agree that it’s a sloppy fix that would’ve been dealt with differently, make stuff deal no damage and slap a graphic slide on it. But even if it’s a sloppy fix, it does solve the problem fast. People should also consider that we had the holidays and people wanted to spent time to their families.
I’d also like to apologize to ANet since I actually thought they lied in the patch notes saying that it’s a pure performance problem. I actually thought it was only because it trivialized content.
Bill’s last comment is a bit strange though so I’d like a more through explanation (considering people already started to kitten about it like little kids)
Even after what Bill said though, I still think the Embers actually did trivialize content.

Honestly, every. single. thread. in this forum contains attacks to ANet. Everyone’s being a prick, badmouthing, insulting and generally talking on a sarcastic tone allover.
One then wonders why they never speak with us.
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug.
heh… as a programmer, I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this sentence. When I think of a bug, I think of an unintended abnormality in something expected… not the sudden appearance of an entire line of objects + graphics. That’s like saying the Windows Control Panel was a blatant bug. Not that it’s issues were bugs, but that the existence of the control panel and its available options simply weren’t intended, and just poofed into being without anyone knowing how or why. =D
Go home, programmer. You’re drunk! =D

You accepted an agreement stating it’s their game that they can change at their own discretion. Besides, don’t you think something was going to be done about it considering every man and his dog were buying stacks of embers/whistles? Not to mention there has been previous changes to other consumables.
Works both ways, have you seen how many attacks against ANet does this thread alone contain?
None, just disgruntled customers expecting an actual answer rather than the labeling of “bug” on something that was obviously not a bug for the past year.
It’s part of customer service, I work in it everyday, and this is an example of how not to treat your customers.
This thread is getting entirely off topic though, we need to get back to the actual reason these were nerfed, because MM necros cause far more lag than these fun toys ever did.

Hello Bill. I’m part of the minority of players thanking you for the Ogre Whistle/Fire Elemental nerf. So thank you!
However, please keep us updated on the Charrzooka. I’m sure it wasn’t intended… Was it?
I remember Anet saying that they wanted consumables and enviromental weapons to be useful….wha happened?
What a joke this turned out to be.
If this would cause serious server perfomance problems – why didn`t crash all the servers while fighting tequatl? – If it would be that fatal it would be fixed earlier, I think this is just a reason they gave us for the nerf so that not many ppl would complain – maybe Bill can explain why we had never real performance issues to experience while 120ppl used those items…

Hello Bill. I’m part of the minority of players thanking you for the Ogre Whistle/Fire Elemental nerf. So thank you!
You know, I can totally live with the consumables nerf, but that’s actually not the subject of this thread anymore.
The subject is faith and respect between players committed to the game and developers who rule it. Just read the following:
Items that summon pets now have a 30-minute cooldown. These items were designed to be of pure entertainment purpose but resulted in an unintended combat disbalance as content difficulty is tailored for completion without extra abilities. Furthermore, in large-scale dynamic events excessive use of summon items is also causing server-side performance issues. We apologize to those of you who might have stacked a considerable amount of summon items for regular use.
Now compare it to “mitigating unidentified performance issues” and “ever existing is just blatantly a bug” and feel the difference.
People can eat anything, but they need to see good intent in your actions and trust your experience. That’s common sense of ruling anyone public relations, which just don’t go with the “cheesy purple mesmers” giggles and “blatant bugs”.
The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug.
The decision to throw cooldowns on them were for server performance/stability as the patch notes said, not for balance. Period. This was something that was long overdue.
These statements are contradictory, as others have noticed. They make the developer appear very disingenuous. Challenging the consumable’s existence is not a performance/stability issue – it’s a content/balance issue
The ways game developers prevaricate when it comes to nerfs have always boggled my mind.
There’s other ways to address the alleged performance issue. Disable these during group events, use a different cooldown, disable summoning during combat, etc.
I run dungeons with two friends. The pets helped a little, but it’s still very hard to manage 5-person content since we can’t outlevel it, like other games. This nerf makes things even more difficult for us.
At least be straight with us, please.
A lot of over sensitive people here.

There is absolutely nothing that Bill said that was offensive or rude. People are just making up stuff for the sake of fake outrage. His comment on it being a bug was just incorrect wording.
Furthermore, even if they made that response you posted, people would still cry and whine and stomp their feet. People hate change no matter what.

So your team was designing something else entirely and these items just spontaneously came into existence accidently?
And nobody noticed for a year and a half?
Nice one.
Who needs logic anymore, right?

I’m going to try to keep this as civil as possible. Prefacing your post with: “The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug” was extremely rude, and makes your entire post come off as condescending. I’m going to assume it was either simply a poor choice of words or a failed attempt at sarcasm.
Ignoring that, If the penultimate goal was to reduce server strain, would it not be more effective to impose a limit on how many embers could exist simultaneously in a given map? Slapping a 30 minute cooldown on all items which summon a creature/turret isn’t going to prevent multiple people from summoning their embers/ogre pets/mortars all at once (eg. during a fight with tequatl).
The thing is, even a 30 min cd will not prevent a 150+ people zerg to pop their elementals all at the same time in a boss fight (teq).
So the “server performance” issue is a lie.
Bad fix is bad.
And those same fire elementals will die in seconds and will no longer be in use for 30 minutes. It’s way better than having people spam the fire ele as soon as it dies.
I like this change, I just wish it were on a 5 minute timer.

Well let’s read over the semantics here.
“The fact that most of these items ever existed is just blatantly a bug”
While I personally believe he mispoke and said something different than what he was trying to come across, let us assume for our sake that he did believe that Fire Elementals were not an item that were supposed to be in the game, but a bug (seriously, read over that, it’s absurd and clear that he mispoke)
Can you please expand on what exactly is condescending? Is he insulting your intelligence? Is he ignoring your existence or concerns?
As far as I can see, he is laying the groundwork for why this change happened. That’s a neutral response. The only reason why you and many others are taking it as an offense is because you disagree with the change and reading his response with anger due to this change.
And so you end up reading his remark in a biased mindsight

Is that any different than, say in retail, a manager telling an unsatisfied customer that he cannot return his used underwear/eaten food – no exceptions."
Reall now, you all are taking this in the wrong mindset.
He said “Period.” because everyone here is coming up with speculations and theories as to why they nerfed it. People speculated it was because it was providing unfair DPS. But Bill comes here and says they nerfed it because of performance issues, and only that. That’s what he means by ‘Period’.

I’m sorry but, no no it wasn’t.
I do think he misspoke and meant something more like “The spamming of these items wasn’t intended by the dev team.” Confusing, yes. Condescending, no. Stop reading insults where there are none.
While I appreciate your concern for the ANet developer, I’m certainly not going to discuss (off-topic, mind you) whether or not my feelings for his post are valid or not. I have reported the post to ANet, and have posted my opinion here (as have you), and that’s really all needs be done. If the community team at ANet agrees with you, he’ll be fine, if not, he’ll be reprimanded.
And for the record, I never used the consumables that were adjusted with this patch. I just read his post, read the context, and was appalled by the lack of professionalism in the response. That post absolutely should have been written differently, and I say that as someone who deals with multi-million dollar customers on a weekly basis in the systems engineering field. I kid you not when I say that if I sent that to one of my customers I would lose my job. It’s a matter of professionalism.

Heh feel like I’m watching a bunch of lawyers covering for a client. =D
Client: “I never met that woman”
Third party: “But she’s your mother… whom you lived with for years. How could you not have met her?”
Lawyer: “Obviously what my client meant to say was that they met, knew each other, but he just did not see her the night in question. Yes, what he said is confusing, but the inference is quite obvious if you just listen to his words!”
>_>
That’s nice. I’ve reported this thread to Anet. Hopefully they will shut this thread down.
(edited by xarallei.4279)
Uh.
I really don’t see how the existence of these things can be a bug. What I see is that someone noticed that people were using the pets in order to take down one world boss.
Honestly, we found a way around that last night on Teq, and I’m not going to say what it was for fear that THAT will be nerfed, too. We actually beat her in less time than we usually do using embers.
There really is no one here who actively wanted this nerf and thinks it’s fair, save for the people who didn’t use embers (and who technically shouldn’t have a say.) I don’t WvW, so if a nerf comes across WvW, I don’t comment on it. It’s not my place.
However, I do use embers, and I cannot imagine that this was JUST done for server load, especially because of the fact that only a few servers even do Teq, and that’s only at certain times.

And what if you sent a completely neutral response explaining the reason why systems were changed, but your customer responded with unjustified insult?
You would go to your manager and explain that you were misinterpreted or your comments were not properly explained and came out wrong.
But your client would continue to complain and ask you to be fired, while you are left wondering how in the world this customer came up to this conclusion that you were offending him.
That customer is pretty much you and everyone else right now that interprets Bill’s remark as insulting.
Yes, what he said is confusing, but the inference is quite obvious if you just listen to his words!”>_>
I am an attorney, so this post actually amuses me quite a bit. Haha…
The bringer of bad news,
-BillThis is one of the most inappropriate, accusatory, and unfortunate posts I have ever read from an ArenaNet employee, and I hope dearly that you get actioned for daring to post that to your customers. We are not the problem here, communication like this is.
Please enlighten to me how he offended you. I obviously don’t have the apathy or capability to understand where all this outrage is coming from.
The first line of your post is where you set the tone for the reader. The first line of Bill’s post was extremely condescending and unprofessional, making the rest of his post seem condescending and unprofessional.
Using words such as blatantly or period to emphasize your point makes you sound condescending. Perhaps he wasn’t trying to sound condescending, but that’s the feeling I got when I read his post.
I don’t get the association of ‘blatantly’ with anything negative. ‘Period’ I already discussed above – it’s meant to explain that this change was from and only from the performance perspective – nothing else.
Fire ele’s weren’t only used on Teq. Several servers use them on bosses in order to meet their loot threshold or even tag mobs. It happens on Maw, Melandru, Grenth, e.t.c.
Is there a prize to whoever is the most offended by the dev’s statement?
