Contested Way Points
You know them. You hate them. You are vaguely conscious of their necessity but you still despise them. Here is what really eats me. I check the map to see if the Temple of Balthazar is uncontested (’cause I want Obby Shards) and it typically always shows uncontested if I am in Lions Arch for example. Unless I am located in the Straits of Devastation which is rarely if ever any more, I will typically blow several silver daily, travelling to this site to buy my Obby Shards only to get redirected to the Rally Way Point.
I am short a few silver, I am in a map that I don’t want to be and just a little bit miffed that Anet seems to be actually stooping to a new low to grab money rather than fix this small programming “oversight”. Come on Arena Net you can finesse our money better than that. I know you can. I see you do it every day.
It is part of the LS2 storyline. Mordremorth is attracted to the way points on ley lines. Hence, many on Ley lines are disrupted.
it was always this way in the game. If you can’t afford a silver for a WP, something is wrong.
It used to show all Waypoints as contested, and people did not like that. So, ArenaNet listened to the playerbase and changed it.
Now, of course, people do not like that.
smh
You are already in the map…try guesting, you might get lucky and nothing to lose.
You are “short a few silver” to the point that you cannot WP?? Man, you need to manage your funds better.
Take 10 – 20 minutes and go do a dungeon and make that your “WP token cash”.
Lazy kids these days.

OMG, you’re right ! Its the Eternal Alchemy at work ! Tyria is woven with diabolical Dragons and Pale Trees that scheme to disrupt linear travel ! Why didn’t I think of this ?
Or , it could be just a money grab.

people called it a money grab when all waypoints showed contested..would you prefer that?
I’m happy with how it is, was exactly how it was when a wp would become contested, it’s fine, the next nearest wp, isn’t very far.
This has absolutely nothing to do with LS2. LS2 made some waypoints (ESPECIALLY THE VIGIL FORT IN LION’S ARCH) contested, but the reason why they cannot show the contested/uncontested status of waypoints on your destination map is that your destination map isn’t one map, but a collection of perhaps 2-5 different maps, depending on server load, with different contested/uncontested statuses depending on the events that are completed there. Unlike previously where your world determined which map you’d go to, under the megaserver structure, the game client is unable to predict which map of the 2-5 you will actually be assigned to until you load that map.
Under the older system where people ported to a waypoint which will autoport them to another when it’s contested, there’s a slight loading delay when you arrive initially – and if you enter combat against any mob the combat code will override the waypoint code allowing for people to use any waypoint regardless of whether it’s contested or not. The current system determines first whether the waypoint is contested before loading, and if it is, it loads the nearest uncontested waypoint from its temporary server location. This location is within the server’s framework however, so once you enter a world, regardless of whether it’s contested or not, you will definitely be on that world until you zone out/in again.
It’s more a technical limitation caused by the megaserver system than a deliberate attempt at money sinking. The deliberate attempt at money sinking is the 5% listing fee on the TP. They’re nowhere near the same scale of effect.
OP, while you’re there, farm a couple of herbs, or maybe even try to get a foxfire cluster and make your money back. A single foxfire cluster sells for about 30 way points now. Or you could do 2 events while you’re there and get some karma in the bargain.
Hayashi, I think your explanation says it best. BTW, I am not one to ignore good work when I see it. This is a good game. By and large, I do endorse the crew and their excellent work making this a very enjoyable and extremely playable game with continuing improvements. One such improvement that I will mention are the new green arrows that guide you in , The Grove, for example. For this, I say Bravo ! Arena Net !
And no, Im not hurting for silver or gold. Arena Net privately knows that all too well.
Happy Sunday everyone !
If you must buy Gems to convert to Gold to pay for the occasional changed Waypoint, I do feel for you. Because that is the only way a surprise-contested Waypoint could be considered a ‘money-grab’.
And, if, for some reason, you really meant ‘Gold-sink’, then we should all be grateful there are Gold-sinks in the game.
And, as previously mentioned, once in the map, you could guest (at no ‘money-grab’ or ‘Gold-sink’ cost), and likely find the Temple or whatever in the state you desired.
Geez.
Seems like a technical limitation of the way megaserver works. nothing is perfect and this seems like a reasonable workaround to me.
