Contested Waypoints & Megaserver Problem
There is a problem where you end up paying double/tripple travel cost to use the Waypoint system because of MegaServers!
For example, I am standing in Lion’s Arch and when I look at the map to travel to Plains of Ashford so I can do AC, I cannot waypoint anywhere near the dungeon entrance because of contested waypoints! However, once in the zone (miles from the dungeon) none of the waypoints that were apparently ‘contested’ are no longer contested, and I have to pay again to travel to the destiation I originally wanted!
This is unfair and adds another 2-3 silver per travel every single time. Now although that’s not a lot to quibble over right now, over the coarse of a year that’s going to add up very quickly to a large amount!
Now obviously you can’t just abandon the mega-sigh-servers (even though we would all love that!), so I propose you simply remove the ‘contested’ state on all waypoints. this has further advantages as well…
…for exmaple, CoF and the defending event. If the waypoint is contested and you’re not there, it’s a 5minute trek to get there and the event is over, so you may as well wait and hope that other players are actually doing the event! If there was no contested waypoints, you could travel there, help with the event and get your dungeon done all in one switf move.
This is ‘basic’ logic imo, why is this not implemented? There is no real reason to prevent people from traveling to a waypoint!
Um, if you are in LA, why don’t you just use the free portal to Plains of Ashford and save the money?
Your concern is understandable, but your example wouldn’t be the best choice.

And by that you mean go to BC and walk out the portal right? But that’s atleast 2 load screens more than you would otherwise take if going into AC, time you can’t send party chat saying “hey guys pls wait I’m spending the next 2-5 mins in loading screens” and not all to very few Pugs wait for the final team member to load in meaning they miss an event or boss.
So the “hey you can still go the long way round” statement is a moot point when the whole idea of waypoints is to travel direct, quickly and conveniently. If most waypoints in an area are unusable even if not actually contested then there is no point in them even existing, because they aren’t doing what they are supposed to do.
It seemed the complaint was about cost rather than time in that particular example. I offered another choice.
But, if the issue is only time, and not the cost, then being deposited to the nearest uncontested waypoint when traveling to a contested (though it didn’t show as one on the map) waypoint would be a fine solution. =)
…and here comes the thread lock.
