First off, before I start, I’d like to preface by saying that I never feel the need to post on a forum, much less a gaming forum. However, ArenaNet’s continued disregard of the feelings of the player base on this matter, as well as the recent changes causing the degradation of this game has compelled me to post.

Now, onto the matter currently under discussion; I am ******* kittened. I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but one of the main reasons I play a game, or any game for that matter, is due to the art style. In my opinion, and I hope some of you will agree with me, is that the art in a game is an essential element. ArenaNet is effectively destroying my interest in Guild Wars 2 due to the increasing -actually decreasing- amount of changes to visual spell effects that have been in the game for 3 years.

What’s the point of playing a game where everything is dull and boring? I want to feel like I’m in a fantastical world, having fun with friends, and being sucked into the story; that is not achieved by altering visual effects under the guise of player enjoyment is down due to the amount of visual noise. What a load of bs. Here’s a tip, if you want your game to be successful, forget nerfing **** for PvP balance or Raids – balance can not be achieved in an MMO, so you should also forget that, it’s laughable – and just make an enjoyable experience and that’s fun. Customers will decide what type of game it will be or what direction it will go. e.g., Super Smash Brothers. SSB didn’t start out by trying to be an eSport or a competitive game, the community and players made it so.

Some of you may disagree and not think that this is a big deal, but it is to me, so you’re wrong and **** you… just kidding. I think it’s great that the developers aspire for the game to be more, but I feel like that they’re going about it in the wrong way. You do not change the game in one aspect to please players (does anyone like the forced visual effect changes,) while at the same time negatively affecting others. That’s just, like, common sense.

Hopefully due to the recent backlash regarding this issue, ArenaNet will decide that it would be best to implement a spell effect graphic slider. I believe that would be a better solution than kittening off however many players. I would like for them rethink their stance on forced visual effect changes. I don’t play a game for it look boring. Part of the reason I love playing this game is because of the gorgeous spell effects. The recent changes have negatively affected my enjoyment of the game and if they don’t reconsider, I will be finding other games that will listen to their customers and keep their interests in mind.

I think it’s hilarious just how badly they understand some things, such as the aura change. They were supposed to be obvious and easy to read, otherwise people would miss them being up.

Seriously this war on visuals has got to stop. I want to play on pretty MMO not a failing esport.

A lot of us are upset with these recent changes. Most didn’t think they would take it this far. Visuals are an important part of games like these. Someone in charge at A-Net has forgotten this… Hopefully they wake up soon. It put enough of a bad taste in my mouth that I plan on taking a break from the game.

They are virtually invisible, with just a thin egg shaped outline instead

I’m in the same boat as the OP. I’ve never posted on the official forums before because I’ve never felt the need to, but these recent changes to the visual effects of spells and abilities are so egregious, so uncalled for, and so unnecessary that I feel like I need to come on here and add my voice to the growing mass of people who are unsatisfied with these changes. One of the things I love most about this game is its art style. I think GW2 looks freaking gorgeous and a big part of the visual fidelity of this game has been its flashy spell effects. Now, it seems like Anet is trying its hardest to kill the aesthetic theme its built.

The backlash on these “visual noise reductions” was very strong during past nerfs, I thought for sure that this patch would dial back on some of the most dramatic ones (looking at you ele fireball!). Imagine my disappointment when this patch didn’t reverse the earlier changes but instead introduced even more visual nerfs.

What it ultimately feels like to me is Anet trying to force its players to play the game the way Anet wants us to. No we’re not allowed to have options or sliders because Anet doesn’t want us to choose the level of visual effects we have on our screen, they want to choose for us. There was and has been huge outcry, and really it feels like valid community feedback is being ignored. It’s just saddening.

What an absolute shame. The more they do to this game, the less interested I am in it. I have 12 level 80’s….1000’s of hours in this game.

I’ll stick with fallout 4 for the time being.

Their Esports thing will be a big fail in the end when they end up with a lot of players leaving for other games soon enough. They don’t even realize they’re killing their own game, especially in a season where a lot of new games are introduced.

I think they’ll realise it when their jobs are down the drain.

Count me among those on the verge of quitting. Apparently the people in charge don’t understand the importance of keeping the former beautiful special effects. I am certainly not getting a substantial reward by getting a few exotic drops daily and an ascended chest every two to three months.

Stripping the visual appeal from GW2 doesn’t leave much else for many considering most players post level 80 are striving for a superior & unique appearance in the form of flashy weapons, armor, and effects. This is exactly why people invest so much time & money into obtaining a legendary and earning gold for gem store attire. How can Arena Net not be aware of this?

Like others, I find the timing for these visual nerfs very suspicious… after Heart of Thorns was released… after months of bombarding us with how cool elite profession combat skills & powers would be… only to have them taken away shortly afterwards. It’s both sad & infuriating.

Hopefully, Arena Net will come to their senses, but until then I’ll put GW2 on hold & devote my gaming time to Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, and Mad Max.

The e-sports ship sailed on this game 3 years ago.

And Anet has yet to realize it.

Trying to make this game become a MOBA game . Good job Anet !
Look at League of Legends , each champion just have 4 skills , 1 passive and they have to blances them every patch by nerf , buff their skills or remake them as a new champion with new skills and passive . For GW2 , i can’t imagine how they can do it ….
Anet should focus on WvW , Event , contents , storyline …. in game than trying to make MMORPG become MOBA .

You are right, Esports are precisely that because they don’t have that many abilities, which makes both understanding them and watching them easier for viewers. No matter how much the visuals are toned down GW2 will never be an Esport because it is not simple enough. The visual clutter is merely a symptom of the complexity if the game. The balance patches are also not frequent enough.

I think that the devs should stop being so adamant about GW2 becoming an Esport and focus on the strengths of their game, instead of giving them up for a pipe dream.

I’m saying that they simply shouldn’t bother with Esports unless they are willing to make PvP completely different when compared to the rest of the game.

sigh, why dont they simply give us the old animations back for our own character. The other ones can use the new ones, as it wouldnt matter for most what others do and would improve the fps in big battles.

Personally I think that culling the visual effects hasn’t even gone far enough. I am tired of attending a boss fight in PvE and having to assume that the boss is underneath that white ball of nothing in the middle of my screen, while dozens of melee players drop dead because they couldn’t see telegraphs of the next boss attack.

Having said that I’d rather have a slider or at least a few distinct options like “tone down all effects outside of my group” or “tone down all effects other than the ones caused by me”.

That’s entirely the result of impact particles, which haven’t changed at all since 2013, and have only changed slightly since 2012. They stack and scale with mob size.

Agreed, Nobody cares about GW2 Esports as it is an MMO. There was no reason to cull the visual effects and simultaneously not even allow players to adjust the effects based on what they can handle on their computers.

Let the community decide where it wants to go like how Super Smash Bros Melee’s community chose where to go with the game. Clearly GW2 isn’t esports making for pitiful numbers and not even being considered in any major multi game tournaments.
