Convert Skins to Transmutation Charges
Wouldn’t that render the “buy transmutation charge for gems” useless?
Intriguing idea, but wouldn’t that just be an automatic upgrade?
Convert to a specific skin —> Convert to any skin?
It’s been brought up before.
I suspect that folks at ANet probably agree and that the only thing slowing them down from implementing it is… other priorities. It probably won’t happen until they are working on other changes to the transmutation/skin/wardrobe system (assuming I’m correct about them being in support).
Wouldn’t that render the “buy transmutation charge for gems” useless?
Yes, but no. Really if you PvP enough, or just do the story on enough characters, you can already get enough transmutation charges that you wouldn’t need to buy them. Those players who would buy them will probably still buy them because they can, and just don’t want to get them through game play. The idea is to give a little value to extra skins, and I doubt it would drastically affect the sales of transmutation charges from the gem store.

Not sure what you mean by an automatic upgrade. It would only give you a transmutation charge to let you change your character’s look using skins you’ve already unlocked, so it wouldn’t be just ‘any skin’. I’d be happy if they just stopped dropping a skin I already have unlocked, and instead give me a random crap item.

I don’t see an issue with that because there aren’t all that many ‘skins’ that we acquire for free; there’s usually a quest or gem cost or something that we’ve already “paid.” (The notable exceptions are GW1 HoM skins + AP chest skins, although those arguably also have a cost.)

Yeah, it’s a minor issue at best. It perhaps would add some value to items on the TP such as the Pink Quaggan Backpack Cover, though I’m too lazy to calculate the additional value with the API currently down.
It’s been brought up many times, though ANet has not commented on it that I know of so I fear that hoping they are only avoiding it due to coding issues and time constraints is likely only wishful thinking.
I would love this to happen. My bank space (which is maxed, they can’t sell me any more of it) is clogged with unlocked skins that I have not yet found the right use for. Yet the gem value of the amount of charges I’d have to use is huge enough I don’t want to delete the one-free-use (not that I ever directly buy transmute charges, but I do tend to hoard them so I never would have to buy them if I wanted to change an armor or weapon look, and converting all my unlocked one-use skins to fungible charges would be awesome).
Functionally, these skins are transmute charges. Why not let us turn them into charges rather than having to use bank space against future wardrobe changes? If we “burn” them on skins that aren’t the specific skin, what harm is there?
Locked skins that are still tradeable should of course be exempted, but once the only thing we can do with an unlocked skin already in our Wardrobe is apply it to our own gear, it would be major QoL to get it the heck out of our inventory.

That’s why I think post Wardrobe System they should have let us salvage the transmutation charge out of it. The skin is now in the wardrobe and these one time application skins are simply cluttering the bank or for me a character slot for an armor skin with charge mule character.
RIP City of Heroes

I get about 100 or 200 skins a day that i already unlocked. That would mean about 200 transmutation charges a day. Thats way more then you could ever do on pvp. And not even the richest of the richest would keep buying thoses charges if they get 100 for just playing an hour any kind of content

Ah, what they’re talking about isn’t every weapon or armor that you get, but the actual free transmute skins that are given with certain items.
For example when I recently purchased the Gemstore Phalanx set it unlocked all 6 pieces in my wardrobe and additionally gave me 6 armor pieces as free transmute skin items. You can’t equip, salvage or sell the armor skins, only use them or destroy them. I used the pieces I liked but I did trash 3 of them because I didn’t plan to use them now. Not a big deal as I value 3 inventory/bank slots over 3 transmutation charges, but it would be nice to salvage them into transmutation charges instead.

Would be in line with the black lion chests substituting a key for a duplicate exclusive item.

I’m a hoarder, too, but I managed to successfully break myself of the unhealthy habit of saving skins already in my wardrobe. I came to realize that I accumulate charges faster than I use them (through map exploration as well as the occasional wvw or pvp), so I made myself destroy most of the skins. I didn’t manage to get rid of all, but I’m still trying .
Oh, and in case when I do use transmutation charges I often only realize afterwards that I still had a free copy of that skin lying around somewhere, making saving those skins even more stupid.
