I definitely like the idea of r500 Cooking, although I think it could be made much more useful than that. Here’s my idea:
1. Quadruple Stat Food – Dishes that are crafted at 450 onwards give two major bonuses and 2 minor ones. There’s no need to create entirely new recipes for this tier either; there are a lot of r400 foods that would make for good candidates to be elevated to r450+. For example, the recipes from the Molten dungeon (most of which require large amounts of ingredients as well as subsidiary dishes), recipes from Southsun, Dry Top and the Silverwastes and the new HoT recipes. It would help give more sinks to the otherwise unwanted tons of Passionfruit, Nopal, Sawgill Mushrooms and Cassava Roots that are available on the TP.
2. Perma Stat-Boosting Elixirs – At r500 Chef you gain the ability to craft Elixirs, which give a small permanent stat boost to the character that drinks them (say, maybe 20 points). Each character can only benefit from each type of Elixir once, and each Elixir requires an enormous amount of base ingredients to craft. For example, there could be an “Essence of Berries”, which requires 250 Blueberries, 250 Strawberries, 250 Blackberries and 250 Raspberries. This is then further combined with 250 Omnomberries and a few other ingredients to create the Elixir.
Elixirs themselves can be sold on the TP, which gives Chefs a nice new potential revenue stream.
We’re not stuck on 400 cooking. There’s simply no need for 500 cooking.
The 400 to 500 increase in the armour and weapon professions was just there to burn mats and give you Exotics to salvage for Dark Matter.

You know that just because its in the game you dont have to do it. If there’s 500 cooking no one will make you gring a few hours for it
“You don’t have to do it” isn’t much of an argument. Also I think you missed the point of the “for the last time bloodstone dust has no culinary application” joke, it’s gently poking fun at the idea of Ascended cooking.

The only reason I would see cooking go up to 500 and meet the other crafts is if they introduce fishing and that is how you leveled it up.

I like the idea of having some collections based around cooking. It would give a reason to craft some of the lower tier dishes. Maybe a collection or event that would change from time to time.

It might be a con for those who use those mats for existing recipes. However, I’m not sure that the “huge numbers of mats” thing that comprises L500 crafting would be as palatable for consumables as it seems to be for permanent account bound items.
Introducing things for people to do is kind of what MMO’s do. MMO’s create time sinks, and some people want those. This would be a pro for some players. It might or might not be a pro for ANet depending on whether the system could be created with comparatively little dev time and whether enough players care. Given the issues they had with L. collections, I’m not sure that ANet wants to do more stuff like that with the legacy content.
The game really does not need more power creep. It contributes to the “game is too easy” mentality because content is being built for a median point in terms of numbers. There is already a numerical difference between the “Gotta-have-it-all” and “Just-want-to-enjoy-myself” players. I wouldn’t be too surprised if at least some of the negative reaction to HoT mobs being “harder” comes down to players who don’t bother with Asc. everything or with food.
Enough people would not be pleased to spend the time/gold to get to 500 if there were no numerical advantage. So, ANet would have to supply such an advantage. Thus, I think the outcome would be more “too easy” complaints, and were that to be addressed, more “too hard” complaints.

I agree with your whole thoughtset, but my original point was more about the cooking collecting and having a complex recipe as a reward, more than it was to have cooking lv500, which isn’t necessary to add the collection.
Also, since we’re talking about a consumable feast rather than a consumable inventory item, I’d figured they’d be acountbound, maybe even limited to instances, not allowing them in open world. Lv.500 Cooking should have Ascended food that turns you into a combat Quaggan/Skritt/etc that allows you to use your normal skills in that form, along with the statz.

I’d have no issues with a cooking collection for those who like such things, though doing at 400 would be, imo, better for the game. That would allow both the increased mat prices and the goal, without opening a can of worms.

The foods arent stronger than common foods, just longer lasting and infinite in use.
I cant see a negative effect it’d have in wvw that food doesnt already have.
And why does all content have to available for everyone?
You raiders now got the only decent looking legendary backpack? What do we have.. fairy wings and shattered crystal wings
grandmaster cooking could be used for fancy mount foods that upgrade specific mounts.

[..]We’ve talked a lot about what we would want 500 cooking to be and have a vision for it. As is the way of it, I don’t know if or when we’ll be able to fund such a project. Cooking was my baby, probably my favorite systems work I did for GW2. I’d love to see it brought to 500 at some point. Part of a long list of stuff I’d like to get to, heh.

I also believe we should make the jump to 500 cooking. Food and utility buffs are a great way to complete a build which is just missing that ‘something’. Food buffs are also much more versatile and easy to use than stat-juggling/gear-changing etc.
The possibilities for ingredient-combining are also much greater than with any other craft- we could use those millions of +1 fractal infusions to create various stat-boosting recipes (which could be for fracs only or be more general with a boost inside fracs). I think 4-stat food is a great idea too; how it’s implemented is ofc up to anet as i’m not sure how the core-game-only accts would get HoT items…
Although we already have the food primer from the gemstore, having more hour-long food items would be welcome.
However, I’m strongly against making the journey to get from 400-500 as arduous as the OP. Levelling cooking (for me) was a horrible experience because it was not intuitive or as common-sense based as the other crafts. Although i used guides to minimise my costs for the other crafts, for cooking i had to use a guide to actually tell me what to make next in order to level it up because there are no hints or unlocks to indicate how to make progress (i hated having to make 25/50/100 of the same item just to move the progress bar).
It would also be nice to have a drop-down menu to filter what to make by stat, whether we have the recipe unlocked or not. At the moment, i use wiki’s food-by-stat tables because the only other way is to hover your cursor over the food item to see what it does.
But yeah, go for 500!
I like the idea of leveling cooking to 500 (OCD wants them all the same, kitten you cooking and jewelry).
A few new food recipes could be added such as Koi Cakes or the other holiday food not able to be crafted. You could require the ingredients that currently don’t sell for anything to increase their demand. Adding bloodstone dust or other ascended materials could lead to it being acct bound so it would give a desire to level up cooking. You could add duration to the currently available foods to bring them up to 1 or 2 hours (thereby not voiding the gem 12 metabolic boost) but would make it much easier for WvW without having to worry about food/wrenches all the time.
Another benefit to just adding a few foods already in game but not able to be crafted and extending duration is that no one would “have” to level up cooking as this would mainly be a QoL/convenience feature.
Anyways, depending on how it’s implemented I’d be all for leveling cooking to 500.
I wouldn’t mind the idea of making a legendary dish of awesome that lasts 24 hours or something xD
and ofcourse: Pick your own effects!

I could use a huge Fryingpan as a hammer (I can see use for the sound effect.) a meatfork as a trident..
A cleaver as an axe? A dough roller as a mace.
I could use a set of measuring cups as focus and a choppingboard as shield…
We could get a scepter made froma saucepan and a staff from a reack with cooking utensils all dangling and swinging, clinging and banging like well utensils….
And last of all I could use the cooks outfit being reworked to an armor skin…
or at least the cooks hat. this would be nicew for lvl 500 cooking

Interesting that 500 cooking was discussed as being on the “to-do-eventually” list as recently as 2 months ago, and that the devs already have an idea what they want to do with it. I would be against power-creeping food via bigger numbers, but I think there are potentially interesting products that could be added to the cooking profession that might justifiably be gated behind cooking levels greater than 400. Chances are what I am about to suggest has already been discussed to death by Ms. Murdock and others, but out of ego and since this is a suggestions thread, here are my thoughts:
1)Feast recipe unlocks: feasts are a cool system and they encourage good play, but I don’t see players engaging with the system much because the barriers to entry are so high – this is due almost entirely to the 50 mystic coins required to learn each recipe via the forge. Tying feast recipe unlocks to crafting levels instead of gold would make the system more accessible, and is also a more intuitive way for the player to progress towards feast crafting.
2) Infinite food. Another obvious suggestion. The whole schtick of food is that it is a use-limited buff, but as the fractal potion overhaul has shown there is some value in offering players an infinite version of a timed buff as a high end convenience item. The way I would handle it is by introducing a generic “Infinity Cloche” item (crafted using a vision crystal and other high-end crafting materials). This can then be irreversably combined with 10 copies of a food item of your choice to create an account-bound infinite-use version of that food item. The advantages of this approach from a business perspective are that it encourages repeat engagement with the crafting system for players who want to have endless copies of multiple foods; and that it provides yet another way for shared inventory slots to prove useful.
3) Infinite feasts. Combine 10 infinite foodstuffs of the same type to create one infinite-use feast. Provides a long-term gold sink and ultimate prestige item for the best of the best chefs.

Just wanted to say that this is one of the most positive statements about forum use I’ve heard for a long while. I play quite a few MMOs and I’m often starting a new one or going back to one i haven’t played for years. There’s little more discouraging than having a question or a problem, googling for an answer, finding a link to a forum thread that’s directly relevant and then going there only to find it locked.
Yes, you can start a new thread but a) that’s more daunting for a new player than simply posting on an existing one and b) a new thread from a new player is less likely to be noticed or receive replies.
I wish all MMO forums operated a policy of “is this comment still relevant?” rather than simply looking at the date-stamp on the thread.
