Cool downs in crafting...?
Welcome to the new expansion.
Grind Wars 2: Gates of Time.
I don’t think the cooldown is 4 hours. I believe it is 1 per day and you just happen to be 4 hours from the reset of the dailys.
It’s meant to control and mitigate huge fluctuations in price for the very small % of players who will want to hoard and rush through crafting ascended.
If we didn’t have a time-gate for this item, it would have caused the materials to rise to prices far higher than they would if we had time-gated mats.

you’re probably right.

eh… ?
The materials for crafting these lumps… iron and platinum, is a joke and easy to acquire.
What you said makes 0 sense to me.
wow you’re right about it being annoying and unnecessary I’ll give you that!

I don’t have the time to explain a simple concept of supply demand. But you can look alone at the prices of iron and platinum before and after ascended crafting is introduced.
Remove the time gates and you could see those prices rise even further.

Lets try a different angle: They could make these high level materials cost like 50 orichalcum which might take you a day to farm and cause them to be rare and enter the market slowly. Instead they make them easy to make yet still force them to enter the market slowly because these are for high level recipes and not intended to be super common. The goal is to take time, not be overly expensive on their own.
This also keep the market from spiking artificially at the release of the recipes as everyone is trying to acquire them. Suddenly iron and platinum prices are sky high as ppl try to buy it up to make the high level stuff – not so much of a joke to aqcuire when you can’t spend a few silvers at the TP. The “cooldown” period helps keep prices steadier than otherwise by stretching the demand out over several days.
I’m not saying I particularly like or dislike the system, just explaining what it’s trying to accomplish. Its effectiveness in accomplishing its goals is up for debate

If someone has already spent the time playing the game, by basically turning their time into the gold that they already have, and will spend it on mats to create ascended material, what difference does it make. That’s right, none.
It’s an annoying artificial block on the player that has no reason. It’s putting a block on players that have already played a lot. Wow, that makes a lot of sense…. not.
It’s a bad mechanic and has no place in the game. I do not like the direction this game is going in. I read your posts, but all I can say is: Does not compute. I don’t get it, and to me it’s just a straight up dumb thing to do in this game, or any game for that matter.
It’s like forcing people to play casually, when not everyone plays casually. The last thing you want to do as a game designer is force people to play a certain way. Letting people do what they want to do is better game design.

For people who would farm the mats to aquire the materials to craft the lumps instead of spending gold on TP to get them, it’s definitely a barrier.
For those who would spend their saved gold on buying the iron/plat to craft the lumps, the cooldown is a preventative measure against artificial inflation of those prices.
Say you can get 1 iron ore for 10 copper (disregard actual prices, this is just explanatory). If there were no time-gate and you could craft at-will, then the price of ore would shoot up tremendously and it might take a silver for 1 iron ore. The value of your gold just dropped significantly, devaluing all the time you spent acquiring it. This is Anet protecting the value of in-game gold so things don’t blow out of proportion like in other MMOs of the past. It also protects the value of your wealth.
On the opposite end, if I stored up iron ore and then sold it all on the market while prices were supremely high due to crafting with no barrier, I’d get very rich off of resources that you mentioned at first were “a joke” to acquire (as they should be). Anet doesn’t want this to happen either for the protection of the economy.
I would actually be interested in reading a blurb by John Smith (the resident economist at Anet) about the specifics of how a time-gate such as this impacts market values within the game, because economics, even in a controlled game environment, is still a complex subject to wrap one’s head around.
I get what Vol is saying, and others, and I am sure it was some protection against an insane rush on the materials. But the real issue here is uncertainty.
Many people are continuing to craft asceneded materials for fear they will be used on something else, and that time gate will just prevent them from doing that whenever that item comes out quickly (think lumps of mithrillum required for heavy armor).
So what is happening is that people will just continue to buy up those low end resources (like soft wood), until it reaches a price point that is too much for them to bear. This is something that would certainly have happened the first week ascended crafting was released (with no time gate), but once everyone had their items, the prices would drop again.
Right now the prices are being held high, because people are continuing to make time gated materials with the hope they are going to be reused in something else. Just like charged crystals, if you MIGHT need it in the future, you can avoid the time gate part by staying on it now. If there was no time gate, you wouldn’t see this problem.
Either way, those resources will continue to rise in price, and will get inordinately high if they are in some way used again. I feel very sorry for heavy armor users…. at least the wood prices will taper off as they are likely not used in any armor.
My only question is…. this entire system was designed to make those low level mats valuable again… (mission accomplished), but what is your strategy now? At what point do those materials reach a price that is unreasonable (like Dust), and what do you do?
A weekly limit would work so much better than this daily thing.
Like, you can craft 7 max per week: if all in 1 go or 1 per day is up to you.
With current system it feels more like a chore – as dailies.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.
It was under the guise that it would let players craft them and make a profit.
You know what ultimately happened? It cost more to make these items, then it cost to sell on TP.
Can you even sell them? Most (if not all) of the ascended materials seem to be account bound.

Deldrimor steel ingots and spiritwood planks
deldrimor steel ingots and spiritwood planks can be bought on the trading post. Time gating them ensures that their value will remain high.
Spirit of Faith [HOPE] – RIP
I agree that the cooldown affects economics.
However, I believe the original intent was gating content, not mudflation.
One is intent, the other is a side-effect.
Oh wow. Just two of all the ascended materials you can make. What’s even the point then? They could at least let you trade off the unrefined stuff as well. They let us do that with Quartz Crystals. Why make it even worse? Well, at least Ascended will hopefully be the last tier.
Their current team is pretty weak when it comes to adding content with true longevity so they have no choice but time gate people and make them waste days/weeks on old content.

Let’s not sugarcoat it, it’s called incompetent.

They are account bound, and the materials are easy to acquire and are not rare at all.
Cool down is there to prevent instant flooding of spiritwood and deldrimore and making them worth 1 silver each on the tp….
Didn’t you just complain that crafting isn’t profitable, well it will be even less profitable if there was no cool down…

instant flooding?
I don’t think iron ore or platinum is very hard to get. Removing the cooldown would change nothing.
You talk of TP inflaming but the first thing I did was buy enough iron ore and platinum to make 7 ascended ingots. Putting a cooldown there does not change anything whatsoever regarding the TP.
The only reason its there, is to slow progress down for no reason at all because the person in charge of loot is incompetent. That woman should have been fired a long time ago.

Edit: Spiritwood planks and deldrimore ingots are trade-able…
Can you create 20 spirit wood planks on day one? no you cant… thus TP is not flooded….
If there was no timer, all the people who are rich or that have hoarded materials will insta craft 10000 spirit wood planks, and compete selling them…
The other kittened thing about this is that you can simply buy the ingots off the TP to get them faster, then get your money back by selling a single ingot a day for what you paid for negating the money you lost.
The cooldown is pointless because you can simply go around it by doing this.

The cooldown is not there to limit your ability to craft account bound weapons….
as you just said, you can just buy the ingots/planks….
What it does do, is no matter how much you try, you can’t create more then 1 per day, thus you cant add to their supply more then 1 per day…. thus supply is limited and keeps their prices high….

the prices don’t really matter though if you can get your money back eventually though by going around it like this.
I get what you’re saying, but it seems pointless to me in the long run.
The prices on these aren’t even that high compared to the material requirement though. You’re only looking at a around 1 gold profit from making all 3 of these ascended time gated materials each day… and that’s dropping rapidly. Should we all suffer this time gate for all of 1 gold profit just 3 weeks later?
…and the profit margin will continue to keep dropping… just look at the price trends.

People should NOT be making planks and deldrimor ingots as an investment. They are likely to keep dropping in price unless Anet comes out with newer ascended skins.
Speculators such as I instead are hoarding the time-gated materials such as Lump of Mithrillium in the event that these time-gated items are required for ascended armor or even precursor crafting (which benefit from time-gates)

I could definately see them using the lumps of mith in precurser crafting, as a way to make that process personal and slow. IE you MUST wait 30 days, because the precurser costs 30 lumps.
As far as the ascended armor though, I would feel certain that will use ingots… it only makes sense as it is the next tier of crating materials.
It won’t matter if you stock up on the t7 metal/leathers as the cloth will be time gated as well.
As far as precursor crafting… no one has any real information on it so I would wait until we have some idea. For now take the free 1g/day… it’ll become less and less.

Lump of mithrillium has a daily cooldown? Which seems highly unreasonable and simply annoying. If someone has the materials why not let them use them?
I don’t get it, and I hate mechanics like this that seem forced.
This dumb cooldown should be removed. There’s no actual reason as to why it should be there in the first place.
I absolutely despise this. I have all 3 of my weapons crafters at 500 now after earning it, and having earned a ton of mats with WvW and Orr Champions. Now I have to wait 9 days (IN REAL TIME) to get enough Spiritwood Planks for one weapon, and I’m trying to equip 8 characters. Completely unhappy and annoyed by this idiotic timer.
