Q:
Cosmetic upgrade components
On the one hand it seems like something that should be done but on the other hand it probably affects less than 100 players.

It affects a lot more than 100 players. According to GW2 Efficiency, about 1% of folks who have clocked 4000+ hours have at least one. There are about 10-20 listed on the TP at any given moment and roughly 10-20 are sold/month.
Regardless, ANet doesn’t seem much inclined to address this any time soon. There are auras attached to infusions (that cannot be used with exotic gear) and auras attached to jewels (that cannot be used with ascended). They’ve changed ascended amulets to take “enrichments,” but haven’t released any auras associated with those and have only offered one that includes an aura.
(Thanks to infrequentia for pointing out that Koda’s Material Sink Warmth is an aura-producing enrichment.)

The overall idea of “cosmetic upgrade item” has a lot of long-term potential, however.
Especially with gem store items frequently surpassing legendaries in splendor, maybe upgrade items are the way to go here.
For example:
- A sigil which when applied to a weapon gives the liquid sheen look of the Juggernaut.
- A set of runes which, when applied to armor, make it fold away into town clothes when out of combat (also opens up another inventory slot to equip town clothes in).
- A sigil applied to a ranged weapon which turns the projectiles into plasma like HOPE does.

Bringing utility and cosmetics into conflict is a terrible idea.

Koda’s Warmth Enrichment is an enrichment , but its only 1 of its kind

right. (and oops)
thanks for the correction — I completely forgot about it (tunnel vision, since I haven’t unlocked it myself)
I’ll update my post accordingly.
