Cost of Bag Slots is too High
I agree. I have 20 toons and have no issue buying even more slots but the bag slots should only be 100 gems. I’ve never bought a single one
When the game came out 400 gems per bag slot was no big deal. Gems are inflated now and it still costs 1200 gems to upgrade one character to max bag slots.
Sorry to tell you this but gems costs the same as they did at launch….800 gems for €10
Prices should never be determined by the Gold to Gem ratio.

Agreed. I’d pay 100-150 gems, 400 is silly.
So your really arguing that You think its reasonable to pay $15 to upgrade 1 characters bag slots to max for a game that is now 3 years old, and in addition the other method of obtaining these bags has also risen as I have said, to a staggering 180g in game currency as well. No matter how you look at it the game has aged and the price of buying something that is considered essential Utility (even more so now that so many new items have been introduced thus taking up even more space) has risen “Overall” when you take into account all of the methods of obtaining gems.

As Glox says, the only exchange rate that matters in this case is the real world currency cost (pounds sterling, gems, euros). The gold:gems conversion is a convenience for cheap players (such as myself) who don’t want to (or perhaps can’t afford) the cash to buy gems.
It’s typical in all games that this rate increases all time time. That’s why I recommend that people frequently convert gold to gems.
- When the rate is relatively low (as it is now at ~16g/100 gems, vs 20g/100 a few not long ago and in November).
- At fixed amounts (e.g. 20g/week), regardless of rate.
- At fixed percentages (e.g. 1% of the coin in your wallet), regardless of rate.
This ensures that whenever you “need” or covet something in the gem shop, you’ll have enough gems, without having to convert at the premium rate.
No matter how you look at it the game has aged and the price of buying something that is considered essential Utility (even more so now that so many new items have been introduced thus taking up even more space) has risen “Overall” when you take into account all of the methods of obtaining gems.
The extra bag slots are not an essential utility, though. People can and do play the game without adding any extra bag slots to any characters. The extra slots are simply an optional luxury item. So, I honestly don’t consider the price to be out of line or exorbitant, even if the game is three years old.
How about instead they just give all characters another 1-2 bag slots? As you’ve said, there are so many items now…Even more coming with ascended salvaging I think and legendary/precursor crafting.
I’ve got all 18-20 slot bags. Find the price ridiculous as well so havn’t bought any. Yet my character is constantly full half way. That’s pretty absurd. This isn’t a f2p MMO…sure feels like it tho…
PS they are like never on sale it seems either. Putting them on sale a ton more would help as well…
I’ve only ever obtained one extra bag slot, for one of my characters. Otherwise I seem able to get by with the basic and 4 extra bags. I don’t even use 20 slot bags as 10g for the rune to craft a 20-slot v. 2g for 18 seems pricy. While I might buy a few more bag slots were the price reduced, I’m not sure that I’d max out my stable of characters (which is no doubt small compared to some players’).
Whenever I hear requests for no-cost or reduced-cost access to convenience items sold in the store, I always ask myself the following questions:
- Are there enough players who’d buy at the reduced cost to make up the revenue Anet would lose by cutting the price?
- Is the gem price at its current level as an enticement to those who don’t want to spend the time collecting the gold to buy gems that way to whip out their credit cards?
- If ANet reduced the price to suit those who don’t want to spend so much and those who don’t want to spend the time to farm, what would they have to sell to make up that revenue?
My answers to those questions, when I consider the OP’s post, are: (1) not likely anywhere close; (2) almost certainly; and (3) I really don’t want to know, as it’s likely something I’d not want to see available.

quoted for truth. I have ‘a few’ characters, and of those characters two of them has recieved a single bag slot upgrade each. I haven’t really found a need to expand them fully, or give the expansions to any other character, despite carrying around copious amounts of fun items (tonics, balloon, etc) wherever I go (even into dungeons and on world boss runs) on whoever I’m playing.
I can’t imagine how much junk you must carry around with you OP if you think upgrading bag slots is a needed thing…

I think you would find that the vast majority of players believe that the bag upgrade is hardly a luxury purchase and in addition that the price of it is exorbitant compared to other gem purchases as it is one of the most mundane purchases you could make in the game and it is essentially a quality of life (in game) purchase (ie. its not cosmetic or fun).

But it is a luxury. More or less the very definition of it no less.
You don’t NEED more than at most 20 slots. You might WANT more, but in no way or for do you NEED it. Thus having more is a luxury.
But okay, lets say that they would lower the price: What should they add into the gem store to make up for the loss of profit from the bag slots?

look im not arguing this with anyone anymore the vast majority of ppl I know are always low on space in their inventories. If you think having a lot of inventory space is a luxury then you have problems,
Secondly if you really think the price of bags is not exorbitant compared to similar like utility items (say bank upgrade which is only 200 gems more Is accessible by all characters on the account and gives you 30 slots which is the equivalent of the bag purchase for the bag upgrade and then some) then I dunno what to say I guess we should all pay a lot for something I see nobody buying simply because too many people I have talked too think its too expensive.
But your right technically we don’t need anything to play this game I guess we could argue we shouldn’t have a bank or guilds or a chat box. there all LUXURY ITEMS.
So your really arguing that You think its reasonable to pay $15 to upgrade 1 characters bag slots to max for a game that is now 3 years old, and in addition the other method of obtaining these bags has also risen as I have said, to a staggering 180g in game currency as well. No I’am not arguing about the price on the bag slots, just your claim that gems are more expensive now than at launch.
I do agree that the price of the bag slots are to high if you only look at pure value for money. Thats why I have bought a few extra character slots instead since you get more bag space compared to what you get for your money on one extra bag slot.
However you should also add what ever value you put on convinence for the extra bag slot. With the extra bag slot you could save a trip to the bank and the time it takes to transfer stuff from one character to the bank and then to the mule character and the other way round once you need the items.
I did however buy all bag slots for my main character, but only when the bag was on sale (yes they did go on sale at least one time after launch can’t remember when) and to me that was value enough for my money.
You should also keep in mind that the exchange rate could change even more when the bag slots go on sale or drop in price, since alot of people would most likely exchange their gold for gems in order to get those bag slots and then it would cost you even more gold to get the gems and by that even more time than it would take for you to buy gems for real money.
There is a solution if new players find the bag slots too expensive, actually there are several solutions:
1 – Instead spend their precious gold not buying gems but buying better bags for the slots they do have. 20 slot bags in 5 slots (5 is what we start with right?) is plenty of space until they can afford to get the extra bag slots. It would be wiser doing this than buying slots from converted gold to gems just to use those slots with small slot bags.
2 – Buy gems with cash and just buy them outright.
3 – Use the free teleport to enter the pvp mists to empty their bags by selling drops and banking until they have more inv space.
Lowering the price on these items simply because of inflation of gold to gems converting is a silly reason. There are the options I have offered. No one really needs all slots open. Heck I have opened all slots on 8 of my chars and have 2 more that have done or are doing world complete (1 has a few maps left to go). On these last 2 chars I have not unlocked the extra slots as I do not plan on keeping them (already deleted one of them) and the 5 slots with 20 slot bags have worked perfectly fine for me.
With the option to send mats to bank at anytime and now the quick free trip to the mists for selling to a merchant or banking there is no real dire need or excuse for complaining about inv space. Sorry that is just my opinion.

I think you would find that you have not interacted with the vast majority of players sufficiently to establish an informed opinion as to what they believe and that implying or claiming otherwise renders your input on the matter questionable.
I don’t understand the need for more character storage space. Most of my characters don’t even have 20 slot bags across all slots. What kind of junk is being carried around that is taking up so much space?
All of the loot I find ends up salvaged. Salvaged material can immediately go to the bank. That almost always keeps my bags mostly empty. In the off chance that after salvaging everything that I am still over-burdened, I just pop into WvW for a second to unload on the banks/merchants there and I’m right back to where I left off.
More bank storage space needed, definitely. But character storage space? I can’t imagine needing more.
When the game came out 400 gems per bag slot was no big deal. Gems are inflated now and it still costs 1200 gems to upgrade one character to max bag slots.
For a player just starting out that’s somewhere between 180g-200g just to max out bag slots on one character. A little ridiculous for someone just starting out.
Would be nice if the 3 additional bag slots were given free or the price was cut by a minimum of 50% to a more reasonable 200 gems per slot making it cost 600 gems total for full upgrade.
You realize that you’re measuring that in Gold-to-Gem conversion, which is not the sole -or main- way that A.Net wants those obtained, right? 400 gems is exactly $5. So to upgrade a character fully, that is $20, or roughly 1.33x a month’s subscriptiokitten5. However after obtaining all these for that $20, you’ll never have to worry about it again. At the end of this month -August- it will be 3 years of GW2. Still far cheaper to purchase bank slots and bag slots for characters instead of paying 3 years of subscription for a game such as WoW.
P.S. Gold-to-Gem rates are not intended for new players starting out. They are intended for players who have been playing for a while who have surpluses of gold to spend on things like that.
the vast majority of ppl I know are always low on space in their inventories.
There’s a type of confirmation bias in referring to friends and acquaintances you know well enough to know what they think. That is, people are more likely to get to know people with whom they share opinions, play-styles, etc. than they are people with whom they have nothing in common. Thus, it’s questionable to use this type of anecdotal report as support for generalizing a point to a larger demographic.
If you think having a lot of inventory space is a luxury then you have problems.
Inventory space being a “lot” is relative, rather than absolute. There is no practical threshold at which everyone is going to agree, “That’s a lot, while that’s less than a lot.” Space is also relative to how much crap you plan to carry, how much extra space you want for drops, and how often you tolerate stopping to salvage and get rid of the crap you don’t want to keep. People who think that a 20 slot backpack and 4 x whatever slots bags they put in them (in my case, 18, so a total of 92 spaces) is a lot of space obviously have fewer problems than you — with inventory.

i agree fully with you on this . and the same goes for unlimited harvesting tools too. as well as bank slot tabs . and even with lets say 200 gems for new bag slots or bank tab,s and 400 gems for unlimited harvesting tools. they still will be making money . who knows they might even have more toon slot sales from it as well too
I have never bought a even a single extra bag slot, i always just had enough with the space i have. And when its full, i go to a merchant.
While the price maybe a bit high, it’s a luxury item at best, it isn’t needed at all. So i dont think the price will go down.
I don’t even use 20 slot bags as 10g for the rune to craft a 20-slot v. 2g for 18 seems pricy.
psssst. Buy 3000 candy corns or 3 candy corn cobs and exchange for a cheaper 20 slot bags
Incoming Quaggans [iQ]
400 gems is 68g at the moment. I can do that in a day where someone else might take a week, but i dont think its out of reach. You can get by rather well with just one extra bag slot if you craft yourself some 18 slot bags. If they lower this i might have a melt down with all the characters that i maxed out with 8 bags.
On the one hand I agree they’re expensive. I’ve never bought any because I just don’t think it’s worth the cost.
On the other hand I don’t agree that they’re essential, especially not for new players. I’ve been playing since launch and as I mentioned I don’t have any extra bag slots. Sure it might be easier to have more inventory space, but you can manage without it.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
You certainly don’t “need” any of those things, 15 slot bags were good enough for most of my characters until I bought bigger ones.
I would agree that it is overpriced though. You are paying 400 gems to upgrade a single character’s inventory for 400 gems when a bank tab is worth 600. Apples and oranges I guess but it is annoying. Now maybe if they’re running a sale… cough
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
I think it would be a fine price (or could go up a bit) if it was all characters. But I’m also a cheapskate that wont buy unless it looks like a GREAT deal.
Eh I have max bag slots for 40 characters so 120 bag slots purchased in total.
I bought gem cards from Target or Best Buy when they are on sale and then waited until the bag slots were on sale in game.
As for the bags, fractal boxes cost relics or candy corn buckets are around 3-5g depending on price of candy corn.
Do you need more bag slots? Not a necessity but it does make things a lot more convenient since you won’t need to salvage so often to make sure you have space.

I disagree. I make around 300-400 gold per 1 sitting in SW pending drops RNG. With that, I wait until gems drop a bit as they fluctuate. Last Sunday I bought 2k gems for 316 gold. Enough to get my alt inventory completely open and bought orange salvage kits with what I had left over.
I dont think a single good long gaming session is too much to ask for full inventory unlock. Sorry.
And if you play only 1 hour a day for very few days, well, thats because you are a casual player with a very good job and LOTS of disposable income. Again, sorry, but those are the 2 ways.
Why even do you need so many bags?? There isn’t even enough worthkeeping loot in the entire game to fill a 20 slot bag o.o
bags are probably more of a necessity than a luxury item. Makes sense to make them expensive. Though they cost as much as when the game started. In money. Buy them with cash or convert your grind. Simple as that.

The game did not become cheaper to run and develop for because it’s three years old. Gem Store items are priced according to real world currency and never by the gold to gem exchange rate. In reality it’s not gems that became devalued, because they cost the same in real world currencies since launch, but gold became devalued relative to gems.
But good news, the lack of anything new or returning to the gem store in the last several weeks have caused the exchange rate to drop from 18 to 16.5 gold per 100.
RIP City of Heroes
The easiest way to increase your inventory isn’t to spend gems, it’s getting rid of stuff you don’t need. On the whole, you’ll make money tossing stuff rather than spending money to hoard more.
Everyone I know who suffer from lack of space have that problem even after adding slots. They gain 15 slots and they end up using 16, for example. This is more an issue of inventory management than it is of insufficient room.
There are a lot of tips and tricks you can use to keep your inventory tidy-ish. Unfortunately, none of them work unless you are willing to spend some time weeding out the stuff you don’t need.
I’ve never considered buying extra bag slots, even when they were on sale (were they on sale? I vaguely recall at least one, but was too uninterested to really pay attention). There’s greater value to be found in spending those gems on a copper-fed salvage-o-matic (which all but eliminates the need for additional bag space) or 800 gems for a character slot that you can make a mule with five bag slots (and a free 20 slot bag).
Obviously, the ‘vast majority’ of players (or a representative section that use the forums) didn’t read this thread, because it seems most (who did) don’t agree that Bag Slots are a necessity.
I’ve never bought one, nor plan to. I don’t even have all 20-, 18- or even 15-slot bags on all my characters. It’s easy to pop into HotM, WvW, use a Royal or Airship Pass, or pop one of the stacks of Personal Merchant or Banker consumables many have collected over the months.
Whether I/we agree or disagree about the cost/value of the slots, I don’t think the price will be lowered (except during the occasional sale). And…as many have noted, the cost is exactly the same as at launch. Any Gold-to-Gem conversion, at whatever rate, is still free!

Bags are a necessity, and we are given enough bag slots to have 100 inventory slots without having to buy a single extra slot. Extra bag slots are definitely more along the lines of a luxury item.
One of the focal points of marketing for Anet is to fill up inventory slots so that players purchase more. I don’t think any kind of change that would make it cheaper to store items is going to happen in this game ever.
It’s probably also why we will never see anything larger than a 20 slot bag or a discount on runes of holding. I’m actually amazed they put in the collection reward 20 slot bag as well as allowing maize balms to be perpetual.

Same here, to be honest. I’ve never bothered with anything higher than 18 slot bags, and a couple of my least played characters still have 15s. /shrugs.
I never said that bag slots were a necessity, I have no problem with inventory management personally. All I stated was that this gemstore purchase unlike other gemstore purchases, gives you the least amount of product vs every other thing on the gemstore, and it is not a purchase that is fun, it is a utility purchase that many players could use, and it is not a fun cosmetic purchase like other items, therefore I suggested the price should be lowered since most people actually need this and most people DO NOT BUY THEM because it is too expensive for what you get.
This thread pretty much sums up exactly why this guild wars 2 community is absolutely awful, you should all really read the troll responses you’ve all given, micro-analyzing every sentence and being politically correct about everything when all I suggested is that the gem price be lowered on bag slots.

Naw, this is just not something you’re going to get a lot of support for. Most people don’t care about the bag slot expansion at all. I’m kind of in your corner, as I think most of the gem store items are overpriced, but realistically the best you can hope for is that they go on sale sometime around the HoT launch.
ok well
400 gems buys you one upgrade slot on one character – you still have to buy the bag ( need 3 of these to fully upgrade at 1200 gems for a max of 60 extra slots)
600 gems buys you a bank tab with 30 slots accessible by all characters on your account
800 gems buys you a new character with 5 bags slots – bags not included……..
why are individual bag slot upgrades SOOO EXPENSIVE in relation to these other gem store purchase when you take into account what they give you?
for now, I find the use of a bank charcter to be way cheaper then buying a bag, seeing how you can easily have like 80 storage slots for cheap, and able to hold most items you may not use daily.
I’ve never wanted to purchase bag slots, not for the price but the fact they are soul bound. Allow me to move them from one character to another the same way I can move my unlimited salvage kits and gathering tools and I’ll be the first in line next time they are on sale (I rarely buy anything that isn’t on sale). Otherwise I’m happy with my “cheap” 4 × 15 slot plus 20 backpack, total 80, capacity. I normally don’t let stuff build up for a long period of time when in the field without stopping for a minute at the nearest NPC vendor to flush junk, salvage sub rare items and transfer mats to my mat collection.
It’s cheaper for me to spend gems on collection expanders and bank slots than additional character bag slots. And I’m a pack rat and hoarder.
You’re just wrong Jumpin. Most people don’t WANT to purchase bags period. Even back in the day when it was less than 1.5g per 100 gems. It simply made more sense to buy bigger bags than more spots.
RIP City of Heroes
Maybe what ANet should sell in its gem store is not bag slots, since they are soul bound and lost if the char is deleted, but a bag expander. Use the bag expander on a 20 slot bag and it doubles in capacity to a 40 slot size. Then you can pick it up and move it between your chars.
ANet may give it to you.
I agree with you, OP.
I think they are too high.
200 gems would seem more reasonable.
There again, I’m a WvW-only player and don’t wish to skip>stack>melee my life away in dungeons, or do other equally mind-numbing things, so I’m an in-game pauper.
Basically, there are a lot of fundamental issues with this game.
With a little tweaking I feel it could be a lot better and a lot more popular, but certain people don’t seem to want that, for whatever reason(s).
So, it languishes, permanently, in second place.
Shame really.
I think bag slot upgrades should be account bound and not soul bound…
Having 16+ toons, only one is equipped with max bag slots.
….. And Elementalist.
