Traveling cost at 80 is annoying with how much I quick travel. But i never quick travel back to LA or any main city. You can goto heart of mists then take giant portal back to LA to save you on that atleast then use portal to other main cities when you need.

I’m only level 42 and they’re already a game breaker for me. I know its probably to deter people from porting around a ton but I don’t particularly like running from place to place or cripling myself financially just to meet up with a couple friends. Its ridiculous really. On that note I believe the game needs mounts. I think they’d help overall but the prices on the warps points needs to be removed altogether. Maybe add a cooldown instead?

I know you’ve all probably heard this a million times by now but its ridiculous. I’m level 47 and I’m already spending more than half of what I make on warps alone. I know its most likely to deter people from warping around a lot but at the same time who wants to run through the same area again and again only to risk getting downed by enemies and wasting even more money on armor repairs?

The problem is making the waypoints cost so much isn’t getting people out on the world maps, its only keeping us from desiring to travel any further, at least that’s what its done to me. Personally I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not even doing the renown hearts because I don’t feel like paying the silver to get back to Lion’s Arch or Divinity’s reach and I’m definitely not walking all that way back.

As a side note I’d like to add that mounts would be a cool way to fix the problem but a complete removal of the warp prices at this point would be even cooler. Perhaps put a 30-60 second cooldown on them instead?

I agree that the game needs mounts. That would make traveling less painful and fun for the folks who enjoy mounts. If you dont, then don’t use them.
Unfortunately, it will never happen because Anet needs to bleed us to push us to buy gems. Its just me, but I’d rather pay a sub than suffer death by a thousand cuts. This is the first MMO I’ve played that I’ve felt was designed by Ebenezer Scrooge.

Outside of walking how do you suggest I get around? If I walk I get attacked by other creatures, my armor is worn down, I have to repair, and am still crippled financially. Even then why would I want to walk for two hours to meet up with a friend and do an instance? Its killing the social aspect of the game, killing my desire to do renown hearts, and overall diminishing my enjoyment of the game.

How much does an average lvl 80 waypoint cost?

Cost is based on distance. To travel from the northern edge of Frostgorge Sound to Cursed Shore is somewhere around 4.5 silver. Mapping to the closest waypoint (e.g., on dying) is around 1.5 silver. The cost for repairing one 80 exotic armor piece is 1.64 silver, so waypoints cost more unless you are traveling not very far at all.

As to just running everywhere, this can get complicated in places where the mob density means fighting something every 35’. That can take a long time to get anywhere, but there’s always training a large group of mobs onto someone else by running by them, like a lot of kittens do.

How much does an average lvl 80 waypoint cost?

1s 42c <-4s

Put another way:

1 level 80 Dynamic Event <→ 4 DEs
or
3 level 80 Mob kills <→ ~15 Mob kills

In other words. Not much.
I run a ton of WvW (lots of repair costs, and siege costs), run explorable dungeons, and port around the map to help guildies, and I don’t ‘farm’ events or trolls.

I’ve never found the cost of waypoints prohibitive in any way. I do not understand at all how people are managing a net negative with how freely money is given out in this game. I’m sitting at 14g myself, yet many of my guildies who farm dungeons and dragons are nearing, or have surpassed the 100g mark.

Though even at lvl 40 it is getting a bit too much.

A new mode would be great like a half cost jump once a hour, if you´re standing right next to a waypoint.

Waypoints cost a lot but it is not excessive at 80, I can waypoint to a map that I want to explore make the money back doing one heart and vendoring my drops.
It is not a problem. The rest of the time I’m playing I don’t use them unless I want to log out in Divinty’s Reach.
Last night a friend wanted to join us but he had no points on that map, he took the nearest one he had, we simply ran to get him, it took 5 min and we could continue on our merry way.
It really doesn’t stop you playing with friends at all.
Also armor repairs? I can’t remember last time I repaired my armor and I am a Mesmer.

I use waypoints pretty liberally, and I have yet to experience any ill effects from their cost despite being level 80. 15 minutes in Frostgorge/Orr for some ori to sell covers those costs easily with plenty extra, not to mention the money I make running dungeons.

And…you don’t actually take armor damage unless you die. Strap on the best mobility/swiftness set of skills you have and just run past everything if you’re traveling and the waypoint costs are really such a bother.

Then again, I’m probably biased because I’m a Warrior and I have easy access to 100% swiftness uptime and spammable mobility skills.

For topics like this there are always people suggesting what to do to cover the teleport cost and think it’s not a problem. But IMHO if there aren’t any problems, there is no need for suggestions right?

Because if you have to actively do something to compensate the charge, it means the charge is significant, which contradicts the dev’s purpose as of “paying a small fee to use waypoints”.

So how much is too much? I guess it should be proportional to the normal money you receive for doing an event or selling your loot. When an event at L80 still pays you less than 2s, and one piece of loot only give you less than 1s, the teleport fee of over 1s is too high for me, at least when I only wanna travel in the same map.

Some people said cheap teleport will discourage exloring. But don’t you think exploring should be encouraged more to lower level players, when they haven’t seen much of the area? When you got to L80 and have covered a certain amount of the map, it’s not longer about exploring.

Well but that’s only my 2 cents. Seems that the majority is fine with the current waypoint cost.

I use waypoints like a madman (I’m level 80) and I honestly don’t notice any sort of detriment to my finances.

I literally don’t walk anywhere and the costs, to me are fine.

Go eat an Omnom Berry Bar, do a dungeon, go do events, get your daily. Also, are you in a guild that loves to give mf boots?

Making money is easy if you know where to look, and if you knoe how to make money the travel costs become irrelevant. To be blunt, how fair we perceive these costs to be are in direct correlation to hoe good we are at making it.

Edit: Also, in the time it took you to write your post you could of made enough money to warp at least three times!

Even then I don’t see the reason for costs at all. You’ve already explored the area once. If they want you to get out and see the map then you’ve already done that. My problem is that when I’m out in the middle of a map I have no desire to waste my money getting back to town and even less desire to walk back there. Thus I usually find myself sticking in the towns, no longer adventuring. In my mind the costs only deter the desire to actually play the game.

To some of the others you can deny there’s a problem but a lot of us are dealing with it and I’m not the only one to voice this complaint. Even if the costs aren’t hurting everyone, removing them would harm no one.

I can only imagine you bob all over the map using WP’s. Try walking instead.

But as for costs, honestly, kill stuff, one decent fight and thats your WP paid for. 5 minutes gameplay tops

Charging to port was an ill conceived idea anyways, free ports means people are more likely to get out and do events. High costs means people are less likely to jump into an announced event.

Huh?

Free ports mean people jump right to where they want to go and then straight back. They won’t come past gathering nodes. More importantly, they won’t come past events that happen to happen along the way.

When I need to go someplace, I usually port to the closest city via the mists / Lions Arch. Then, if it’s still far away, I port. If it isn’t, I walk. If I happen to come across some event, I help out. If it’s a short one, I finish it. If it’s a long one, I stay a while and then leave, only to have the silver come in later.

Walking from A to B is profitable. Doing so occasionally pays for the times you port directly.

Also, someone mentioned armor being worn down. OK, a clothie glass-cannon in Orr might die unexpectedly. But especially at 80, there isn’t much besides Orr that will cause you to die and thus have repair costs. In Orr however, I simply don’t rush it. There’s events all over the place. Half the time I get to where I wanted to go via escort-quest. There’s so many events and players, it’s hard to die a lonely death-by-NPC.

This always seemed like a good reason to me to reduce drastically or get rid of them. If we also had some sort of system where you could know world wide where events were going on, where people needed help, you might spread the population around more and keep events rolling in some of the lower level zones.

I would have a blast popping around from zone to zone looking to help out with anything in any zone, and alternatively my alts would love for help to show up while leveling. I was all by myself in Kessex with an alt the other day nary another soul at some of the events I was coming across.

Soo… anything but the most remote areas costs less than 2s50c, the most remote areas cost less than 3s if you waypoint from the next city. One event will net you what? 1s20c, I think. So you’re still 2s short of covering your costs. That’s roughly one green and one blue item. It’s a smallish stack of grey trakittenems. During the cause of one event, I usually loot more than that.

Also, some people make it sound like they’d just love to port to some random waypoint, enjoy the scenery and then waypoint out again. Huh? Usually, if I go somewhere, I do it for a reason.

Most activities are yielding money, so I just consider whatever waypoint costs I have to be normal expenses. Just like repairs, if they happen, are a part of what it means to run a dungeon. I don’t consider 3s something for two deaths to be crippling me economically if I receive 26s plus loot in return. Why should I consider 1s 64c in waypoint costs to be?

TL;DR: I really don’t know what the fuss is all about. You have to randomly port to and from locations where you don’t do anything again and again for waypoint costs to cripple you financially. That’s not the type of behaviour the system needs to be geared towards.

More importanly I think the waypoint costs are crippling the social, partying, and the ability to go and help mates, guildies, join in with DE’s, events etc, ability of the game.

It’s making it feel like a single player game, very lonely at times, sometimes I feel I have the whole zone to myself.

I am only new to the game, but the cost so far seem to be right. let me explain what I mean, I compare porting around as like using a bus, taxi or a plane in real life. So it should go like this. to port around in the same zone should be cheep as hell like a bus or taxi( I know taxi are not all that cheep), but in real life most people cant jump on a plane and fly from say France to the US every 5 hours., you would have to save for it. but the same person can ride the bus 5x a day if needed. I am not saying you need to save to port from one zone to another. but if it takes you 2-5mins to farm the cost of a port oh well suck it up, All MMOs are made to kill time remember.

If waypoints in the “open world” worked like the waypoints in cities (free in zone, costs out of zone) then people would use them all the time. People would use them to quickly move to the next event to help and play with other players.

As it is now, that doesn’t happen as much as it should, but I would imagine there is a very real profit associated with players buying gems to convert to gold to spend on waypoints. It seems unlikely ArenaNet would voluntarily part with that profit.

How much are you warping? I never ran into severe financial issues when leveling, but then I did not buy anything except for gathering tools and salvage kits. I was worried about hitting level 80, but since then warping only costs me in the 3s or so range for my longest warps.

Also I do not know how people cant get money, I just did some events got some exotic gear and some skins from the Halloween event and now am rolling in gold that I don’t really use all that much.

I don’t say this to be mean or start something but instead of complaining did you ever try and adjust or adapt your play? Instead of seeing an obstacle and crying about it try finding a way around it, its what makes things interesting.

I haven’t had an issue with it at all. When I’m playing on my own I almost never use them so when I do the cost doesn’t bother me so much. Plus you can cut the cost down a lot by going via cities. (Particularly go to the Mists, then to LA, then to the nearest city and waypoint from there.) It’s not as quick, but a few extra minutes usually doesn’t hurt, especially if you’re trying to round up guild members to help because you can do that at the same time.

As for why you’d want to go over areas you’ve already been to, you’d be surprised. Yesterday I came across a non-halloween DE I’d never done before right in the middle of Queensdale. In this case it was part of a chain and I’d never seen it because other people always stopped the chain reaching this point but I guess they were all too busy with Halloween stuff this time, but there’s others that are just rare which I’ve missed too and I’m hoping to catch one day. There’s probably at least some I don’t even know exist that one day I’ll run into.

Most of the players are not power gamers, that’s how. Also, the waypoints are presented as a piece of Asuran technology in the game (the second most convenient way to travel as compared to their gates). Why should they make travelling costs higher for high level players?
I don’t see a problem with the approach I already mentioned: keep the higher costs in high-level areas, but limit them the the corresponding level range in low-level areas. You don’t earn much in those areas, and you’re less willing to travel back and help out there if it just means high costs. There’s always the way around the Mists and Lion’s Arch, but this seems more of an exploit and somehow broken than anything else.

Besides, porting to the Mists→Lion’s Arch→any major city means having at least 2 loading screens… and loading times in this game, for me, are a major problem.

Most zones are petty small, unless there is a compelling reason to warp from place to place, I just run through the zone, generally there are opportunities to harvest various crafting materials. If you are a cook you can kill birds and worgs for meat. you can catch events that are going on. However, I do agree that the cost of warping is high, espeically the double whammy when dying, you have to pay for the warp and then pay for the repair. This is hard to swallow especially if you are participating in an event where dying can cost you 2x what you make in particpating.

As far as training mobs. If you are using ANY kind of runspeed buffs, the mobs will give up. If you aren’t, however, the mobs will follow you for quite awhile…hence the training of the mobs. If someone has a ton of mobs behind them, they are likely doing it on purpose.

Not sure what waste-land you are pulling a Nightcrawler in, but WP really isn’t that big a deal. Follow these easy steps for total mitigation of WP fees:
1. Waypoint.
2. Pick a direction and run until you see an orange circle (usually 15-30 seconds).
3. Enter the orange circle.
4. Do the thing that the circle demands.
5. When the circle is satisfied then you are given money, karma and experience + all the loot from monsters if the circle required killing.

If you have no time to screw around with circles, run in the direction of your goal and kill some stuff along the way. This is usually the case for Dragon spawns or meta-events; the rewards for those will reimburse you travel costs and more. Possibly lots more.

If you just need to get to a town, go to the Mists, then go to Lions Arch, and then to a town portal. Its two more loading screens. Maybe 40 more seconds of your time.

The only way I can see anyone being affected by waypoint costs is if they are jumping between every single one in a map to expedite map completion. But even then, completion of a map rewards more than you would spend on the tolls.

Or maybe if they are role-playing a pacifist, vegan, animal loving, Patchouli smelling Tyrian hippy that is trying to get to level 80 only by doing non-violent philanthropic events. Then some money constraints might come in to play. But those characters shouldn’t be using waypoints anyways because I heard they are fueled by the tears of baby Quaggans.

Ok I should have titled this thread…..

“Cost of waypoints pretty much a SOCIAL game breaker for me”.

Because I would have liked this game to be much more of a social interaction for me, doing things with other people, by charging, what are quite high costs for waypoints for casual players (We all don’t do dungeon runs every day blah blah blah) they have pretty much put people off being sociable, and being able to travel easily to group with other people or events.

Lets try to consider the social impact, not the “I have shedloads of gold” syndrome.

PvP tab go to heart of the mists take portal to Lion’s Arch – that makes one leg of going to the bank/merchant/changing zones free

I don’t like Lion’s Arch. It looks cool. But it has a poor layout for crafting/bank/tp, and the map chat there reminds me why I hate so many MMORPG players – it’s intellectually insulting.

So I don’t usually want to be in LA, and the number of loading screens involved (even with SSD and fast internet) is punishment for going the mists/LA way.

I have plenty of gold so travel costs are no biggie to me but I can see how it would suck for people who don’t have as much time to play, who suck at accumulating gold, or who aren’t as good at playing and die way more than they should.

Yes, you can recoup your loses from wp travel…. IF you make that travel productive. Basically, I have to play a very specific way, of essentially min/maxing my time, or else I’m financially punished for it. How is that casual-friendly? Oh, casuals shouldn’t be so concerned about their gold amounts… why? Given player behavior and corresponding buying power, wp costs are basically regressive taxes by nature.

If I go back to a lower zone to help a buddy out, I don’t necessarily recoup that loss. Also, because it’s so much more cost-effective for him to wp around, I can’t keep pace with his movement… I’m basically slowing him down if he walks with me. Luckily, I can more or less maintain constant swiftness on my engineer so that he can solo for a bit and I’ll catch up eventually.

And if wps are going to be so expensive, then areas like Orr shouldn’t have a large portion of them contested. There should be more than one/two wps that are never contested and evenly distributed around the map so you can at least be somewhat near the intended destination.

I’m one of those players who is rather confused by how this is so game-breaking for so many people. I am by no means a power gamer. I play at most a few hours a day. My level 80 character salvages (and banks the mats) all whites, vendors all blues, throws all greens into the forge, and salvages rares for ectos. Which is to say, I don’t get a whole lot of money from item drops because the only ones I usually sell are blues.

And yet, despite using waypoints to travel quickly, even occasionally all the way across the map because I just heard a dragon’s up somewhere and I don’t want to waste time on the loading screens involved with the Mists route, I always stop playing with more money than I had at the start.

Sure, it’s not a lot more, and I’d obviously have to change my playstyle pretty radically if I decided I want to ever have a legendary weapon, but I still manage to make money in the long run and don’t have to change how I play in order to do so.

I used to think the same way for the cost of wp’s but then i stoped thinking like that once i opend my invo from completing 1 event while in orr. It was full. Full enough with trash to sell off to more then pay for 10 wps costs within orr. From 1 event.

As is completing any event basicaly pays for a wp travel cost itself. And dont forget the loot you can sell off to the npcs. Either way you are making money.

Only way i see people losing money is purely using wp to get around for no reason at all.

Btw if you wana save some silvers simply port into the mists and go into LA and pick a portal you want to go to……Thats free btw.

And the repair cost is super cheap imo..What isnt cheap tho is the gear getting damaged each time you get knocked down and even tho you dont die lol.

Also from reading your post seems like you need to spend some time in the mists to perfect your build on the training dummies and fightable npcs. I know some of the monsters in orr can be a pain the kitten to deal with but there are many ways to fight them.

I just prefer head on.

You all seem to be missing my point about social interaction and are more interested in “I have/make enough not to have to worry about waypoint costs”.

I think waypoint cost are quite considerable if I want to go off and help anybody with something and then have to waypoint back again.

(And I have said “Game breaking” was a bit of an overstatement).

It can stop me being “sociable”, and I have asked for help on several occasions (Nicely) and not had any response at all.

It seems like people are talking about two different things in this thread – the cost of waypoints while soloing and the cost for playing socially (helping low-level guildies and people in map chat).

Yup got it in one, I want to play with people (Be social) and not be penalised for doing so.

I don’t understand why

A) The system isn’t distance based, and
B) The system doesn’t allow free waypointing within the same zone

Seriously, why should we pay to use waypoints in the same area? ESPECIALLY if they’re close to each other? On top of that why isn’t the system calculating travel costs by distance? In Gendarran Fields there are two waypoints (one of them is Nebo’s Terrace Waypoint, can’t remember the other) that are literally fifty yards apart. It takes 15-20 seconds to run between them. And yet at 80 they both cost 1s50c to use between each other. How does it make sense to have two points so close together cost the same amount? I could understand if going from the south-easternmost WP to the north-westernmost WP cost some money, but any closer than that within the same zone ought to be free, and any out-of-zone waypointing should be calculated on distance. Kessex Hills to Queensdale ought to be much cheaper than Kessex Hills to Malchor’s Leap.

I like how people defend the game so much that they tell the OP he needs to play differently. Shouldn’t have to change how they play. The price simply is outrageous and needs to come down or add types of mounts which I know most will hate but it already is a pain for some to make money. I wish for once fanbois could just admit when things are wrong and potentially game breaking.

ok how do you get anti-social from currency cost of using a wp?

Seems to me you are just being lazy and looking for a reason.

Seriously currency in this game is easy to get. Just because its not fast paced like other games..its still easy.

Im allways broke because i use my currnecy to buy things and get around in the game. I know i will make it back and realy helps that im not a gold horder as the vast majority of gamers are..OMG i need all the gold!

Stop being lazy and just go play the game. You will make your precious coinz back.
