Could You Play ONE Class Only?
I first made a warrior, and recently made a thief…for a time i did play on both equally…but over the time i just focused on my thief… I worked hard in the last few months to have my Incinerator, Permanent gathering tools, permanent salvage-tron, and right now working for my ascended set.
I guess it’s all about time. I have time only to play for 1 character…and do everything for that one…it’s like with kids…you have more, you have to share something between them….but when you have only one, you focus all your time money and energy in that one.
I spend more time on my Guardian, but play all of them at least a bit. I have 10 toons on main account, 5 on second, 4 on third. So spreading out the love obviously limits time spent on any one.
I find after I’ve spent too much time on the Guardian, I need a break and switch to another profession. Helps from getting bored. Partly it depends on what I’m in the mood for, for example, if I feel like working on leveling one of the non-80s.
In short: I’m all over the place!
My first 80 was a thief, mostly because I was enamored with Dreamer and wanted a character who could make the most use out of it. I main an elementalist now, I am in complete and total love with the profession.
I have all three of the light and medium armor professions up to 80 (no heavies, I find them painfully boring) but I kept going back to Elementalist.
I switch around a lot. I find it makes things more interesting to play different professions and use their different skills rather than playing the same profession and using the same skills over and over again.
Also, they all look different and I like to see them more than just briefly on the character select screen. I did get them all to 80 and I enjoy each one, so why limit myself.
ANet may give it to you.
I only play one class. I always have in every MMO, I can’t stand starting over.
I am also a Main only person.
I have dabbled in some alts, but alts are always temporary – only to enjoy the combat with other classes. When I get bored with them they get deleted.
I wish I could hide all the empty character slots on the start screen – annoys me to have 4 empty slots and only my mesmer.
Edit: To clarify – compared to mesmer, everything else just gets boring very quickly. Only melee ranger has given me a decent amount of satisfaction as an alt – but still temporary.

Each of my characters has a preferred game mode. I play my ele the most, everywhere in PvE. The current state of my characters:
Ele- all PvE content and sometimes wvw
Warrior- dungeons
Thief- dungeons that need stealth
Ranger #1- world bosses
Ranger #2- wvw/pvp
Mesmer- wvw
Necro- pvp
Engi- wvw
Guardian- tequatl
Edit: forgot to add, I suppose if I had to choose just one, it would be my ele.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who only play one character.
Personally, though? While I’m sure I COULD play one character if I really wanted to, I definitely much prefer to play a variety of characters. I have 6 right now, eventually plan to have one of every class, and I swap between them all fairly regularly. Sure, I might be in a mood for a certain character and play them a bit more one week and then neglect them the next, but I rarely avoid a character completely for any real period of time.
Nope. I enjoy playing too many of the classes to just restrict myself to one of them
I have 7 80’s (no necro), and while I do use some for specific purposes (Thief – CM/sometimes TA; Ele – AC; War – WvW roaming/small group havok; Mes – helping friends), I’ve spent nearly 70% of my total playtime on my Guard.
In any MMO I play, I generally have a single main, who I fully equip with all the best stuff, then a few specialty characters that I just can’t get into enough to play more.
It really comes down to the player. What is their play style? How much free time do they have? What sort of goals do they wish to achieve?
For me, I am a “variety is the spice of life” kind of player. I have 12 character slots, and I try to divide my time between them as best as I can. I get enjoyment from creating a character, designing their look through armor and weapons, and even to some extent a back-story. It is what makes the game fun for me. While I do main as a Guardian and spend roughly half of my time on him, I also jump onto my other characters when I feel like I need a change of pace. I play all classes, and participate in PvE, sPvP and WvW with all of them. While progress is much slower per character, at this point I’m not sure if I could ever focus on playing just one.
On the other hand, my sister spends all of her time devoted to her Necromancer. She doesn’t play anything else.
Well, I’ve got 13 characters, all L80 and map complete, all professions, but 2 necros, 2 guards and 4 Eles….. If, I had to choose just one it would be Ele, but don’t make me choose
I have one of each class, and many are at 80, but I do all my dailies, LS stuff, and other events on my first character, my ranger. She has far more playtime on her than all of my other characters combined.
I have 15 characters on my account right now. 13 of them are 80s. No, I don’t think I could play just one class, let alone just one character. Sure I might have streaks where I play one more than the others, but I swap to someone else eventually. I regularly play my ranger right now, but I still end up swapping to an ele, or a mes, or even a necro for certain things (sometimes all in the same play session).
Nope, not me. I need an army of alts in any mmo I play, and in this game they are all classes. I won’t play all of them equally but they all get a run. I’ve played with people who run only one character and I’ve always sort of admired the focus they show.
If there’s one class I could not play its Thief. I have one to 80 and I enjoy running him around but every time I try another it just feels meh.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

Got 10 characters now. I enjoy all classes except engi, but I still have a main (guardian). Played my main for half of my total playtime.
So yeah, while I like switching things up, I generally enjoy guardian the most.
I’m doing it right now. My Necromancer is currently my ONLY character.

Your skin will wrinkle and your youth will fade, but your soul is endless.
I love Engineer but Ranger is my most effective class. Any others I could happily never play again.
Hell no. I even get bored of different builds quickly, and am usually broke because i spend all my gold in buying new gear for one of my 10 level 80’s
Solo roamer, all classes.
I have a friend that has only ever played a mesmer since the release of the game. She is by no means an “elite” player, having tons of natural skill, but she has gotten to the point where she does not make any mistakes in dungeons or fotm, and only ever dies if it’s due to a fault of the rest of the party. And although she isn’t really in to pvp/wvw and usually only does them for the dailies, I’ve never seen her lose a fight. It’s pretty insane.
I have multiples for each type of gameplay. I like some classes in PvE while not others, same for PvP and WvW.
Depending on what I’m doing, I switch it up bewteen them.
I don’t think I could play one class in all types of gameplay.
No, but I do have 3 level 80 thieves.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
I just recently started Guild Wars 2. Tried to play a Necro first, got up to around level 30, decided it wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be, switched over to a Ranger, which is now my main. I did create an Ele, Thief, and a Guardian. All of which I dabble with(Necro too). But, I spend about 75% of my time on my Ranger. And, to answer the title question, no I couldn’t play just one. Would get burnt out.
Rindyu – Human – Archer
No. I have one of every class and feel like I never have enough time to play any of them.
No, I have one of every profession.
I always stick with my main character. I might take a month off and mess around with an alt but it never lasts. My main character always looks like me and I even use my real name cut in half and no matter the game or class archetype, my main character will have a build for the same type of movement and utility that lets me get around in the action without thinking.
NSP
I’ve been with my engi since the beginning of Gw2-and I love engis. I never get bored switching builds and kits.
If I could play only one class it would be necro. Hand down. Period. End of story.

recognize my command!”
I only play Mesmer (I have 4 of them) and get bored of the other classes very quickly, Mesmer seems to play like a transfer of will more than the other classes (I want to go THERE, i want to kill THIS) and so feels like an extension of me. I don’t get bored of it ^^
I have one character for each profession. After I got the looks I wanted for them, there wasn’t much to do on the classes I didn’t like…Now I only play on ranger and ele. If I absolutely have to stick to one character, I’d go with ele. Easily the most fun and versatile class. Funnily enough, I spent the most gold on my guard for his looks and gear.
i did spend the majority of my early playing days on my elementalist only. once he got to 80 i stayed on for a while before exploring other professions, finding the guardian to be my next best fit. nowadays i find each profession fun in its own way to play, so i can play each easily. (though ranger remains my lowest liked – even from gw1)
Ele is the only class I can handle for extended periods of time. Its hard to get bored when you have 12k hp and 2000 armor and 30+ abilities available at once Only other ones ive been able to play for more than a day have been engy or mesmer which still get boring after a while. The rest of the classes you just seem to spend 90% of your time auto attacking, outside of pvp ofc (and some of them still do in pvp *cough longbow rangers)
Anyway unless youre planning on making ascended armor (and if you are do it for the class you do dungeons/fractals on), theres no reason to pick a “main”. Exotic armor only takes like a week to get and once you have that just pick which class you feel like playing that day. Easy.
Aeneaaa – 80 engineer
Aeeneaa – 80 Ele
I originally started with the intent to just play one, then for awhile got interested in crafting so started more.
Got 8x 80’s now and some in the pipe-line.
7 of those (got 8 but one isn’t 80 yet) are made so they look the same (all human) reason for that is multiple characters based on race can lead to some not being used if you’re not keen on a race.
So with them looking the same (a race you like) the only thing different is class and the name. So it just a case of which class do I fancy using today.
Works for me.
Yeah, I think that’s kind of what I’m going for. Though I keep saying but never get there, I really do want to get into PvP one day. I know I’ll never be “leet” I think it would be fun to really learn the capabilities of a class playing against another person rather than mobs.
I have also tried all classes and have an 80 thief that sits and crafts in LA. I have deleted an 80 mes, never could get far with ele for some reason. Also deleted an 80 guard, as I found it boring as kitten to play.
I think for me, my time is too limited to get anywhere with more than the 3 I have, and even then, as I stated in my OP, I’m thinking of paring down to just one. I love dat ranger tho
Could I? I’m doing it now, no problem.
I’m an alt-o-holic, so there’s no way I could play just one class exclusively. I “main” a Ranger and Elementalist pretty much equally, and experiment with other classes on the side.
I do have a Thief and a Guardian at 80, but I feel like I barely understand how to play them. A big part of that is probably thanks to how ArenaNet has handled the leveling experience, with traits being very slowly drip-fed into the late game. I think it really discourages people from getting to know their class in-depth. I shouldn’t be max level and still have no clue about the potential of my class…
I couldn’t do it. Playing only one class pretty much ignores large chunks of game content and playing styles that I would miss experiencing.
I could and generally i do, but sometimes i have to change when others in my party/team have the same class and won’t or can’t change.
No chance, I play my Ranger/Guardian/Warrior all a pretty solid amount and couldn’t imagine picking only one. I like them all for different reasons; it’s just so nice to switch around instead of using the same thing all the time.

Not in this game I couldn’t. I’ve got at least one 80 of each, and several each of my favorite professions. Most of them have RP stories to further differentiate them. If I’d had to stick with just my first one, the RP would have held up ok (he’s had the most story of any of them, though several have been tightly woven into guild plots) … but I’d have been miserable in the game play because he’s a Thief and far too squishy and low dps. (I do PvE 99.99% of the time).
Now, in ESO … I’m just approaching the first level cap on my main there after a year of play, since GW2 is my main game time sink. She’s a Dragonknight heavy armor archer and completely murders things. I have one of each other main class. None of them feel remotely comparable, and the game is designed much more to do it all on one alt, so yeah, I wouldn’t weep too much if I got locked to just her. Other than the Clothier crafting I’ve raised on my Sorceror, that is.
But in this game? I’m an altoholic and proud of it!
No. GW2 is a very alt-friendly game. My first toon was an ele. And I love her to death and planned on focusing on her and only her alone, not making other toons. But my curiosity always gets the better of me, and can’t help but try another class. After I finished map completion on my ele and fully geared her with exotics, I made a warrior coz I loved the heavy armor skins. And I fell in love the 2nd time. She became my main for many months and I gave her Twilight and Kudzu and full ascended set. Then I got bored with PvE and decided to try PvP. I made guardian, thief, engineer, ranger, necro, just to know how all profession works, know what animation to dodge, and their strengths and weaknesses, so I can beat them on my ele/warrior. I came back from PvP more in love with my ele than ever before so I gave her bifrost, incinerator and full ascended gear. Ele, Warrior, Necro are my favorites when PvPing. I have all classes at lvl 80 and fully geared(except ele #2), and I use them for the following:
Ele #1: open world, all dungeons
Ele #2: PvP only
Warrior: open world, all dungeons, PvP
Mesmer: CoF p1, jumping puzzles
Guardian: Arah, CM, SE, TA
Thief: Arah, CM, SE, TA
Necro: PvP only
Engineer: mule
Ranger: mule
Yeah, engi and ranger are my least favorite.
You are the useless log of flesh we have to drag behind us as we move forward.

Only have one character, a mesmer, and i never get bored of her!
But I do have alts in different lvls too but hardly play on them and are mainly for storage.
All my MMO life I’ve played only one character.
GW2 is the first MMO ever that has me playing two. I play them about equally and I honestly have no vested interest to go beyond that.
Well, maybe if thief get’s rifle for it’s specialization and it’s really cool… maybe. Maybe. But I’ve already tried playing more and they just… don’t get played.
They’re great for extra storage though.
Think two is my limit. But I’m invested in both heavily, I don’t think I could pick one over the other.
Never thought I could play two, so maybe that will also change someday. I dunno.
I only ever play one character, who is a warrior. Of my 2.7k hours in game, 2000 have been on my warrior (everything else has been in pvp only which doesn’t really count because I only did it for the AP). So yeah my recommendation would be to play only one class and focus on getting all the cool skins/full ascended on one character and have loads of gold to spare rather than spending more on gearing up multiple characters. I am not sure why I only play one char, probably just because that is what I have always done but I find it fun still after all the time I have spent on that character.
PvE- Grolex (Warrior)
PvP rank: 20 Rating: 1864 (season 7)
One of my guildies only has one character and never plans on making another. He plays engy and engy alone.
Whereas me, well, check the signature. I’m totally the opposite!
So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”
I have multiple characters that i use for different objectives:
My main: Guardian.
On my guardian i play WvW, Dungeons, PvE, Worldbosses.
Getting the best gear for her.
Other charachters:
Warrior: If a dungeon group needs a warrior or for WvW.
Thief: If a dungeon group need a thief or for WvW roaming.
Ranger: Just for the really nice combination in armor + longbow+ pet to go afk..
If you want to go with one character only and you are used to play with different characters you will eventually start a new character or go back to your old chars. Even if its just for fun.
my advise: Do whatever the meoww you like! Why force something on yourself if that’s not your playstyle?
That’s exactly what I’ve ended up doing. I started this game almost 2 1/2 years ago and have played every day. Started with guardian because I’m the hero type and got that to 80, then decided to try elementalist and that was fun for a short period of time until 80. Why not try a mesmer? I ended up loving it so much that it became my new main. I’ve played 5282 hours with 4281 being on my mesmer. I’ve created other characters just for the AP of the personal story, but I’ve lost interest with other classes for the most part. My mesmer is like an extension of myself at this point and the one I always go to to do anything I want to get done.
