for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I really don’t understand why certain crafting components, say, Damask, have a longer progress bar than most other items? Is it just so we can cancel it? Is it immersion that I get to see each individual item crafting? It didn’t annoy me that much until I tried making some Fulgurite which has a really long crafting bar for no real reason. And you can’t just have 1 fulgurite.
Right now as we speak , I’m crafting 900 bolts of silk (which deserves its own rant), and I’m not sure if it’ll be done by the time I type this post.
Maybe just have 1 yes/no for mass craft, and just do it immediately? Crafting is already insanely boring as it is as I go down the laundry list of what I need, and I already spent so much time getting the vast materials needed for ascended. Being stuck to the crafting station while I watch it happen is like an extra slap in the face.
Edit: It’s still going.

It provides immersion because in real life you couldn’t instantly craft 900 bolts of silk.
At least it speeds up after the first few… Try crafting in WoW – every craft is the same slow speed.
Moral of the story, don’t plan to craft a large amount unless you are looking to kickback for a bit.
Crafting is actually relatively speedy in this game when compared to other MMO’s. But not speedy to a point of ludicrousness.
When it comes to crafting, I just wish all tab-categories began collapsed — that would be a dream-come-true…

I second THIS motion!
I wish we could select several items to craft (maybe by toggling a tick or a flag next to them) then click a button and have it craft them all in sequence.

I’d hardly call it a slap in the face. I’ve been slapped in the face a few times in my life. Never over Damask though.
But seriously, sometimes I don’t understand why some items are slower than others myself, but I don’t think I’d craft so many at once of the things that do take long. The longer stuff tends to be the stuff you make the least.
Try making like 42K silk. It’s one of those things where you leave your character for a few hours and just check back every 50 minutes to move them a bit so they don’t get bumped to the login screen.

I can’t imagine there’s a large percentage of people out there making 42K of silk at a time. The ROI for the developers would be minimal.
I wish cooking would be made more streamlined. I want to make the final product not all the other stuff trying to do the math so I don’t have spare ingredients left in my inventory. I just want to click the food I want to make and if I have everything just mak it :s

And there is a logical reason why you needed to craft that much silk bolts all at once? You are outside of 3 sigma of the general population who craft in terms of amount, too bad, your needs don’t get catered to.

I wasn’t suggesting that a change should be made. I was just giving my experience and what I typically do while waiting. Yes, there is a logical reason why I craft so many at once. It saves time.
In hindsight, the amount really wasn’t necessary to include as “I have crafted a lot” would have sufficed for what I was saying.

The length of time it takes to craft stuff doesn’t bother me a bit because I’m pretty kitten patient.
BUT what Razor suggested here I SO want!

While that’s an extreme scenario and even the idea of storing all of it scares me, even removing a dight would be quite an issue, considering you need 2400-3600 silk bolts for a single set of ascended armor… and then there’s also the elonian, and then there’s also something else. These things just come in such large quantities no matter what.
The other thing is that not doing it all at once doesn’t actually save any time, if I have to do something for 5 minutes 6 times, or 30 minutes once, it’s still the same amount of time. If anything the former method spends even more time if we count the time spent for loading in with your crafter, or sending a character to the crafting station. So I’ve found it best to do the procedure exactly once and just let it rip since the more times I have to do it, the more error prone it gets.
OTOH, it was worth it in the end, since I was mostly venting off excess materials. Originally I was going to just make damask and elonian and sell them, but I then found out I could combine it with all those HoT materials to make jeweled damask patches for a bit more gold while getting rid of useless things like Airship Oil and Obsidian shards, the later of which i really don’t know how I even got so many.

Well, ever since GW2 release, there was lot of updates. Changes for traits, transmute charges, skills. Changes for PvP WvW and lot of other things. But nothing for Crafting Stations at all. My suggestion is not to make them instant, but to add a Queue system to it.
For ex. While my 150 elder wood logs to 50 elder wood planks in progress, i can’t start another refine unless current ‘150logs into 150planks’ is finishes\canceled. But with queue system you can place another refine in queue, so it can start immediately when current one is finished.
I am trying to do a daily ascended material farm ( it is after all about 16-18 gold per day ) and i need to wait and place every refine one by one. I could have placed them all in queue order and go make food or samething
Queue system won’t make crafts fast, but it will save some time if you have lot of them to do one by one. And of course things like pre-made queue lists will be good too. Click one button and wait.

That only holds true for some items. Look at how fast dowels (which happen to be almost worthless in some cases) are crafted.

Seconded. That’s the concept I was trying to convey further above, but you said it much better.
There are a couple of reasons game developers slow down crafting:
I can’t imagine ANet speeding things up much.
What they could do is allow us to queue up several crafts in a row. At the moment, if you want to make a hammer from scratch, you have to make each part one at a time. They could set it up so that it crafts all the parts in sequence — it wouldn’t be any faster, but it would be less tedious (and less prone to certain kinds of mistakes).
When it comes to crafting, I just wish all tab-categories began collapsed — that would be a dream-come-true…
Agreed. However I’d really like it to remember the expanded state of each category, per character.
Can be stored locally, no need to persist it server side.
Oh, oh, another QoL adjustment that I would love, is for some materials that can only be bought (such as Thermocatalytic Reagent), ot be added to the crafting menu. Having to close the craft window, to go the vendor, and go back again (with the tabs expanded!) is aggravating…

I wouldn’t mind that. What I do now is stand in a spot that allows me to have both windows open, which works for every crafting station except for 1-2 in LA and scribe in both guild halls. I barely remembered (until you mentioned it) that it used to be an issue.
There are a couple of reasons game developers slow down crafting:
- If it’s nearly instantaneous, people don’t value it.
- There are economic ramifications to rapid crafting — slowing it down assures that people think twice about what they want to craft and when.
- It gives an illusion of having more stuff to do.

You forgot the most important one:
Database query speeds.
Making crafting take time means that it is far less likely that the item database servers will be overwhelmed with simultaneous requests, since they can schedule tasks much more efficiently by shifting each only minute time frames which are imperceptable in the full stack of a crafting que. Additionally, making most items craft one at a time means those queries require less CPU instructions to complete at once since you’re simply saying increment a value rather than adding an integer every time and filling the integer, which requires defining the integer, comparing the two values, and doing integer math on them.
In a single player or small multiplayer game this isn’t a big deal, but when you scale up that math to an MMO the size of GW2, in which every region needs to run on the same cluster for character/item databases those little calculations can quickly snowball in to big lag.
What we really need is the EQ2 mini-game that happens during extended crafting! O.O
