Hey all! Question. I am trying to discover this myself.

When you are crafting on a character and you go to the discovery tab and use random materials mashed together to discover a new recipe. Do these discoveries become account bound or will you have to rediscover them on all characters?

Thanks!

Recipes learned through discovery are only unlocked for the character that discovers them.

Consumable recipe sheets you learn will unlock for all current and future characters on your account. Recipe sheets that are available for multiple crafting diciplines (such as: armorsmith, tailor, and leatherworker) will unlock for all of those disciplines.

There’s something charming about rangers.

I learned this the hard way when I started a second tailor and bought an inscription without noticing the character already knew it, but found out when I double-clicked on it. After a little looking at all my crafters I realized this was the case and luckily, it wasn’t too expensive a lesson with the low-level inscription, which had no use except to destroy.

It’s worth knowing that this recently changed, and prior to that recipes were character-bound even from sheets.

Aha! Well, that may explain why this caught me off guard. I only recently started playing regularly again after a few years and when I played before, this was likely not the mechanic. Thanks for that info.

Yes. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Recipe

Crafting recipes must be unlocked or “learned” before they can be crafted. Recipe unlocks are account-based: learning a recipe on one character will unlock it for all other characters on your account (as of the July 26, 2016 update).

It was changed like, 7 months ago.

The wiki page there^ doesn’t indicate that it’s only recipe sheets and makes it sound as if it’s all recipes, but it was in the patch notes: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Game_updates/2016-07-26#General_3

Recipes unlocked through consumables are now unlocked account-wide. Logging in with a character will add their known recipes to the account.

Hmm…..in fact the wiki doesn’t indicate at all that recipes learned through discovery are only unlocked for the character who discovered them. But I’m pretty sure that’s the case. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting#Discovery

I think they left discovery recipes character-bound as learning them is the main way to skill up in the craft. Take that away by having them unlock per account and you’re left with the very inefficient crafting things you already know for minuscule xp.

You said exactly what I was thinking. Makes perfect sense.
