I wish there was a way we could craft ascended item as gifts for family and friends who have been on our in-game friends list for at least a year. As your crafting you could select the intended recipient and it would automatically be mailed to them on creation.

I can’t see ANet trying to establish a rule for “who’s a good friend and who is not”. What if you accidentally removed someone from your friend list? What if your brother just added an account six months ago?

Further, they bound ascended gear to the account for a variety of reasons.

Instead, you can gift virtually all the components, except for things like vision crystals. Or gift the person a nice skin with a similar value and let your family/friend decide whether to sell and use the coin for ascended.

tl;dr a lot of work for a niche use that ANet might not want to support and that you can already achieve (sort of).

  • Can’t give account bound items.
  • Told that account bound items are account bound for a good reason.
  • Complains that spirit of giving is dead.

Anyway, if you want to gift an ascended item to a friend, give them the components to make it (sans Vision Crystal) and pay their way to crafting level 500. That would be an exceptional gift.

If gift giving is your thing, there is a thread under Players helping Players “Gifting Strangers”. I say this because the spirit of giving is very much alive in Tyria and more so with Wintersday right around the corner. So … dont complain about what you cant do. Recognize what you can do and make someone elses day…. If your “spirt of giving” is as a live as you inadvertently claim it to be

MERRY WINTERSDAY!

My thing is giving a gift to a loved one who is a casual player and doesn’t have the time, patience and focus to craft to 500 in the short term.

I really don’t understand why ascended items are account bound or even any weapon/armor for that matter. If legendary weapons can be sold on the BL store then why can’t ascended? When doing discovery I’ve accidentally crafted weapons that were exotic and account bound. It wasn’t something I could use and I couldn’t sell it. I had no choice but to salvage it or it was just sit taking up space. I really don’t see any valid reason why crafted items should be account bound.

My thought about the year on a friends list is if they absolutely have to be account bound then time on the friends list could be used as a way to filter out gifts from black market sales of crafted items. Few if any black market sellers would have the patience to wait a year for a sell. I’ve never accidentally removed anyone from my friends list. Accidentally added yea (thanks LFG tool) but never removed.

You can’t gift your good friend an ascended weapon. Therefore i crafted a legendary to my best friend. Too bad i can’t stop him from leaving the game due to wife issues.

You don’t even realize the irony of that comment, do you?

I indicated several ways in which one could be generous, without changing the nature of binding. I also explained some of the reasons for binding. You don’t have to like the situation; I only ask that you respect that there are reasons and that there are alternatives.

Here’s one more alternative:

  • gw2crafts.net offers an easy route to leveling crafting enough to produce ascended gear
  • It has a shopping list, so you can gather all the necessary ingredients for your recipient.
  • You can look up the recipes, copy them out, and get on voice with your friend and walk them through the 30 minutes it takes.

Here’s another alternative: I help my buddies in lower-tier fractals so that they can gain enough fractal relics etc allowing them to purchase ascended gear from the BLING golem. Although it’s more costly in the long run, the gear works just the same as that you craft yourself.

tl;dr the spirit of Wintersday is in the giving, not in the specific gift.

I feel like people are misunderstanding me. Ok, GW2 is a complex game and I have a friend that has ADD. They can’t play for long without getting distracted, usually only plays it when they get in the rare mood and mostly wonders around PvE. The person isn’t an achievement hunter. I understand all these steps that people keep saying however as people say “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”. If someone can’t focus to follow those steps then no amount of pointing them at the crafting guides will help. I just think that it would be nice to be able to gift crafted ascended items people who have been on your friends list for awhile. It wouldn’t kill the game economy. It would just be a nice gift for someone that doesn’t have the wherewithal to follow the steps.

I have a friend with ADD with several sets of ascended armor he crafted for himself so maybe your friend just doesn’t want ascended armor because its not a priority.

My last gift to my wife was to do all the tedious work of leveling up a crafting on one of her toons, so she can make ascended items and refine excess of basic materials.
It was a work of love.

1. He can return your gift to you, which you then can sell — no loss there for you.
2. The alternative to gifting ascended gear cannot be the crafting of legendaries. That’s insane regarding the time it takes.

Everyone agrees it would be a generous gift. People also point out that there are other generous gifts you could also give instead, which would serve a similar purpose.

This game requires a fair bit of attention to certain details. If a person isn’t able or willing to do any of the possible things that result in them acquiring ascended gear, maybe this game isn’t a good fit for them.

Could always gift your friend exotic equipment. Not quite as good as Ascended but decent enough. If he wants ascended jewelry and back pieces there are the new maps to gather the currencies needed and get kitted up.
