Isn’kitten bit stupid that in order to get your ascended gear you are FORCED to level ALL the professions? I mean, I have a lot of charcaters and I play all of them so I need all kind of armors (light, medium and heavy) and basically every weapon in the game. basically, I need 1000+ gold just to max every profession I need+of course all the gold I need for the actual gear. I mean, isn’t crafting supposed to be something optional? I’m trying to slowly level up at least the most important disciplines but it’s a long, boring and expensive process. Plus you can’t get a single copper out of your discipline, you actually lose money even when you craft and sell exotic gear. Basically, we are just forced to level a specific discipline in order to get the ascended gear. I think they made this choice since crafting was uselss so they wanted to force us into it, but it’s a terrible choice. And don’t tell me “you can drop ascended gear” because you know it’s not possible. I’ve been playing since the first day, have around 3500 hours and I’ve never dropped a single ascended items (I’m not counting the enormous amount of rings from fractals). You can actually drop something but it’s more like a miracle so you can’t rely on that. What are your thoughts about this matter and crafting in general?

I like crafting. I do lots of Teq because I enjoy it, but I’ve never seen an ascended drop for me. I don’t have any real need to get ascended gear, but I have 2 crafts maxed and 3 more within a handful of points from 500. Two more crafting disciplines are at the halfway point and on hold until I decide to level that character. I never felt like I had to level them, but just did it because I like the discovery system and the XP gain. I haven’t found it to be a big deal, although I do wish there was more potential to earn gold at max level crafting. I play very casually and have never felt like the cost to level crafting was a huge burden, although I suppose I’d have a lot more money if I didn’t level them. I don’t feel obligated to level up crafting either. Perhaps if I wanted to raid or do high level fractals, I might feel that pressure, but I think exotics are fine to get you through most content, particularly when supplementing with ascended laurel gear.

Crafting was best in UO, where it was possible to play as a crafter, including running your own shop. GW2’s crafting is alright, but there’s room for improvement.

I find some particular Exotics sell for a pretty penny on the TP. Maybe you should research just which ones to craft, to get your Gold back.

Of course, I don’t buy mats off the TP, I gather them, so it’s all pretty much profit for me. I’m pretty casual, and working on my like, oh, I don’t know, 5th? Ascended piece (not counting the plethora of trinkets, of course).

There are definitely exotics and items you can make where you can recover most or all of your costs or even make some gold.

I think you came on here when you would have been better served searching for answers. If you had googled gw2 crafting you would have found something that halved the cost you are quoting without ever having to farm anything. Ofc farming, salvaging and using buy orders makes that amount smaller too.
I admit, now is possibly the worst time to be starting crafting due to the increased demand spikes on several materials from G Halls etc but it really isnt that bad until you get to 450ish.
As far as making gold from crafting, the problem is that if you could make gold then everyone would be doing it which kills the market, hence you will (almost) never be able to do it to make money. Crafting to 400 usually takes me under 30 mins with preparation (Ive done it on a few accts) – past 400 usually a little longer as I like to plan to minimize the costs.

no one is forcing you to do any thing in the game you dont want to do .
2.i got 4 toons only for my crafting . and you need no more then that to do all crafting.
3. you do not need 1000+ gold to do crafting with i get a lot of my stuff from drops and salvaging . at best i might have spent 500 gold in 2 years time on crafting stuff at best.
4. my thoughts on this is some one is doing it all wrong .
5. on crafting i like it and does me well in a number of ways .
