Crafting necessary?

Hello! Brand new to Guildwars 2.
One of my least favourite parts of MMOs is crafting/professions. Running around gathering materials to make items always feels like more work than fun for me. But I get that in some MMO’s, crafting is pretty necessary for progression. I’m always trying to figure out that balance between fun factor and reward.

Are the rewards for crafting worth it for somebody who may not enjoy that aspect of a game? Is it even an option to not craft and still perform well in end game?

Thanks!

Basically ascended armor and weapons, but since you dont really need those unless you plan on doing fractals, there isnt anything thats totally necessary, same with legendaries. Unless you really want one of them.

I hate crafting in any game mmo or not because its so boring.

You can do perfectly fine in end game without crafting, so long as you dont want to do higher up fractals!

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Thanks!
I’ll go without it for my first character and see how much the high tier end game stuff even interests me.

I would still recommend carrying sickle/pick axe/axe to get the nodes as you pass by them. You can then either keep those materials in your bank, or sell them off in the Trading Post. You get experience points for every wack at those nodes, so it does make it worth it to still collect from the nodes. If you sell the material, you will make some good income out of it.

I had absolutely no problem when I was first going through the game getting level appropriate gear. Crafting, while it can be helpful, is not absolutely necessary. The crafting is a bit different than in most games, though, as – with the exception of foods – I never had to craft the same item 50 times just to get to the next tier. Well, that’s not entirely true. I crafted a bunch of spear heads and markers, for instance, but the final products were unique. The grind to find the crafting materials isn’t that complicated, either. Grabbing the ores across the world (or salvaging it from appropriate gear), cutting the trees and harvesting the food is one of the fun parts of world exploration.

For the first character, you can either go by without any crafting, or dabble a little bit to see what it’s like. Crafting also gives you bonus XP, which can help you advance, but do it early if you want to entirely avoid grinding vendor junk.
