I don’t see anything wrong with the idea. I don’t see what relation could it have with “realism” either… but it would open a lot of useful posibilities to mix and match armor. My norn and human females would be really thankfull for this. Some male norn would be able to show their tatoos at last. Etc.

I have no conceptual objection to the proposal.

I do have a practical one: I don’t want ANet to be distracted by changing the setup. With the current requirements, it already takes them ages to add a full set of armor (for two genders and five races) and even then, we’re not satisfied with the quality.

So I’d support them adding gender-neutral sets, but only if that saves time.

I’m consecutively against every proposal that doesn’t add anything functionally to the game. Wearing opposite gender clothes won’t make me fight better in raids, kill dragon minions more efficiently, or skritt against braham for ignoring orders of a superior commanding officer.

We were promised a purely cosmetic endgame, so it’s totally understandable to want to focus on that part of the game.

Also, one can argue that being true to one’s character can improve performance with said character.

The main problem with crossdressing is that all the outfits were built for a specific build, and there is a big difference between the male body and the female body, at least for the humans, norn and sylvari. To have some of that worn on the opposite gender would require it to be redrawn somewhat.

I wouldn’t mind that, the new outfits being for both sexes. Right now they make a “male” and “female” version. They could still make 2 versions and sell them separately, each wearable by both sexes.

I don’t suppose they’d want to do all the extra art-work for that, although it’d be cool. There are other games where the female characters have such trashy revealing outfits you’d want to dress them in male clothes. There’s one where where pretty-much every females costumes provides up-skirt panty shots and most of them look like sex workers or dommes.

I agree it would be nice if they could do this. It would give all characters more choice of armour skins (less so for charr and asura where many of them are unisex, but there are still some gendered ones). It would also help solve my problem with the lack of sleeveless tops for men – I want to be able to show off my male characters fur pattern/tattoos/bioluminescence but it’s incredibly difficult to find armour that doesn’t fully cover them.

But I also agree that it would probably be a lot of work as male and female characters have different models and I doubt simply stretching or compressing the skin would work. They’d have to actually re-build them.

They’d also have to either split them in the wardobe – so every armour skin is listed twice or add a UI function to select which version you want to show.

What girl hasn’t worn her boyfriend’s jeans at some point?

No girl I know, anyway. We prefer to wear our boyfriend/husband’s hoodies.

I can’t wear my husbands jeans because he’s a lot taller than I am, I’d be constantly tripping over them.

But some of my favourite jeans are a style called “boyfriend” which is basically mens straight-leg jeans in womens sizes. They even have pockets you can actually put things in! Like a whole phone or a wallet! (Or a bat or a small snake, if you’re me.)

To be honest, I’m surprised a game as progressive as this one, with a single queen and lesbian couple, hasn’t incorporated this idea already.

A single queen isn’t that unusual. England first did it in 1553, 464 years ago (and currently has a ruling queen – she’s not single, but she’s the one who holds the power, such as it is). And many other countries have done it before and after.

I’m pretty sure female characters don’t actually have nipples. Designers don’t tend to waste time adding features to character models they are not allowed to show.

That would come under the “can’t just copy across the existing skins because the models are different shapes” category of reasons this wouldn’t be a quick change to make – they’d have to modify some of the armour sets for various reasons.

Heh, that’s surprising. Especially since I’ve seen a similar screenshot of a male character and their anatomy was definitely lacking.

But my main point still stands – they’d have to modify the armour slightly because even without a nipple I doubt they’d be allowed to show the female character’s chests fully exposed.

Actually most real-life animals don’t have nipples (because they don’t produce milk for their young), so technically it’s us mammals who are weird. And even then some mammals just excrete milk onto the skin (but that might be only the monotremes who are especially weird). And they nipples aren’t always on the chest either – bats for example have their nipples in their ‘armpit’ – directly below the shoulder joint where the wing joins the body.

I think you’re right about both the charr and the asura – charr are like real-world cats in that their don’t have breasts and their nipples are hidden by their fur. We don’t know much about early asuran life stages but it seems likely they don’t breastfeed their progeny.

Then there’s the sylvari who cannot reproduce at all. Presumably the Pale Tree can, although that might require another living tree of the same species, and she may not want to. But the Pale Tree modeled them on humans so their appearance is mostly the same.

I like this idea, but I think it would take a lot to implement. My concern would be clipping issues on all the cross-gender stuff. Although there has been improvement, consider all the clipping issues with the charr. Applying something made to stretch on a human frame, to a charr frame, creates issues. I would predict similar issues with stretching a female dress to a male body, and vise versa… especially when you consider the proportions of male norn.
Something that I would appreciate, which would be easier to implement, is undershirts for characters.
In World of Warcraft, you can put an undershirt beneath your armor. This is useful if, for instance, you like the design of a female armor that is skimpy—but would prefer a more modest variant. The undershirt has no armor value, and is there simply to cover exposed skin, or to add additional color, to a given armor set.
In addition to this, Arenanet could also focus on creating new armors to give us options where options are lacking. For instance, more pants for light armor class (especially females), more non-trenchcoat options for medium armor class, ect. They could even design armors or outfits that bend gender roles—a “dress” that is made to fit male characters in the first place for instance.

re models: google Stav Strashko (bonus points for adding toyota to the mix)

re jeans: male jeans often use sturdier fabric (and more reliable sizing) so they get ‘borrowed’ often

Back on topic though. It would be interesting to not have outfits/skins not tied to genders. There was a big call for this with the wedding outfit (think same-sex weddings). The ideal way is with unisex wireframes underneath, like with the Asura. When you have different models under the clothing you open up a whole can of worms, everything from accidentally revealing something that is not normally shown in public to clipping issues. While it might be a nice idea in theory in practice it would be a HUGE headache.

Which is ironic, since one of the first historical mentions of pockets-in-clothes (below the waist) was for a queen of England (she wanted a place to keep her hanky and baubles). People saw her with her hands in these “pockets” and quickly went to dress makers for the new fashions, the artisans added ‘slits’ without any fabric to hold stuff — all anyone could see were the hands hidden beneath the dress; they didn’t realize for a while that this was form following function, not just a fashion choice.

Men’s trousers (or tights) didn’t get pockets until much later. And women’s clothes lost the built-in pocket in the late 18th century.
