Crowd funding for more weapon/armor skins?
Is this deja vu? I could have sworn I saw this exact thread/post earlier today!

More like something they did in GW1.

It actually produced some pretty kitten weapons (far better than most of what the staff made). The only real issue was virtually every one of them ended up as super rare drops in endgame content so it didn’t add as much to the game as it could have.
Yup, it was moved to suggestion, since I think it is more suitable, but I think it can open the door for more discussion, I hope to get more opinion about it in the general discussion section.
Ahh….well, you might get in trouble for creating it, again, after a Mod moved it. Good luck, though! =)
Those “design a weapon” contest are rare, because it take time and it doesn’t have tangible profit.
With crowd funding, the developers will be more motivate and confident that the skin/new content they are working on, is what players want.
There is some legal issues when it comes to user created content being used by developers I’d assume.

I thought it is on the developers part to put forth idea/concept, then players choose which one (or all of them) they want to appear on gemstore by backing the concept.
I’m sure there are artists at ANet who have great ideas about armor/weapon skin, but we never get to see it because they didn’t make the cut.
How many time, we want that armor that never made it into the game, well now at least the majority can decide if it is in game or not.
If it really work they can for a team just for that, let say the target is 2000$ for a weapon skin, backer can buy more then 1 and gift it (since we can do it now in the gemstore)
100 gems costs 1.25$, a skin cost around 500 gem, so about 6$
They only need 350 backer.
With a little organization, this is a win/win scenario.
NCSoft is a publicly traded company, isn’t it? If so, it is already crowdfunded. Buy stock.
This is not a tiny independent company that runs on a shoestring budget.
All of this is already funded by our gem store purchases.
But more power to you if it brings gamer media attention to ArenaNet’s focus being on RNG boxes rather than armor skins and other items players keep asking for.
They hear us, as the new skins from Aetherblade show. But they need to hear it louder.
JAH Bless – Equal Rights and Justice for all.
Justice And Honor – Tarnished Coast.
When they put stuff I like in the gemstore, I’ll buy it. When they put stuff I don’t like in the gemstore, I don’t buy it.
With enough people doing that and providing feedback on the forums, I think they can figure out what we want as time goes by. I don’t like the idea of them expecting money BEFORE delivering on something.
THAT having been said, they might take a page from something City of Heroes did. At two of the CoH gatherings, they let players suggest several costume set ideas, went with the most popular one, and took feedback right there on what the set would need. An artist even made some rough sketches on an overhead projector. This allowed them to deliver on something highly desired by the players.
It would be easy for them to toss some armor set ideas up on the forums (NOT Facebook!) and get some feedback from players.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

It takes many months to design and add content to the game, especially things such as new armor and weapon models. There are already clipping issues with models already in the game, how much worse would it be if they had one month to go from concept to live game?
Basically, if stuff wasn’t already at least in the planning stages when the game was released, it is only coming into the game now and over the next few months because they had to collect data, discuss their options, make plans and develop the content.
No matter how much you post about something, it’s not going to happen when you want it to, it will happen when it’s done.

This is not the point of crowd funding, how much stock do you think you need to buy before they allow you to choose what they add in the gemstore/future content?
This is just another way to bring more funding for the development of the game, but this time it is the player who decide which concept/project they will be backing.
If this turn out to be profitable (enough support from player), they can dedicated a team for bring new skin in the gemstore regularly.
This will allow player to see what the artists are working on.
I know that, but if I were to take any of the things posted here seriously, I might as well superglue my palm to my face.
RNG boxes exist because it has the potential of better profit, but is it RNG, and it lack transparency from ANet, it doesn’t inspire confidence from the community (a lot of people dislike RNG boxes).
In the process of creating new models, they have to create a lot of concepts, they can update us with those, so we are not always in the dark., this won’t take a lot of their time.
The forums do not represent an accurate cross-section of the game’s entire population. And given the predisposition of forum posters to complain about anything and everything that does not happen exactly as the poster wants it to, anything posted as a potential addition to the game and then dropped is going to cause a kittenstorm from the person or persons who liked the idea and cannot accept that they are in the minority.
In short, such a proposal causes many more problems than the nearly non-existent ones you propose to solve. The devs have already learned that any statement they make will be picked apart, misinterpreted, misrepresented, and thrown back in their faces at some later date.
If this didn’t happen, they could probably do something like that, but, well, you know, human nature and all that.
Also, money is not a problem. Anet has a big enough budget to do whatever they want, it’s time, manpower, and what they choose to focus the game on that is the issue.
I know that, but if I were to take any of the things posted here seriously, I might as well superglue my palm to my face.
ANet doesn’t have to do exactely what the players suggests, that wouldn’t be logical. If the idea is ridiculous, even with a million of backers it is still ridiculous.
Ideas come from ANet and their vision of the game.
The artist at ANet put forth some concepts, players back the ones they like.
Player get to see what the developers are working on before the developer puts in months to finish modelling the skin for all race.
They work on those that are successfully funded.
I get what I want, they get the money.
I sure want that.
And since we are backing a concept with money, there is a lot more weight in it.
I already responded to the idea in my post above yours. I don’t see this ever happening for the reasons stated.
Money isn’t a problem for them, but it helps. Not enough artist working on new skin, throw in some money, hire more.
New skins doesn’t have to follow the theme of some future contents, they can be developed independently.
At least with the backers, those complaining about everything have to accept the fact that the skin that appear in the gemstore is actually chosen by the players.
At this point, I personally wouldn’t care if they brought back all my favorite skins and new ones. If they want to be greedy and continue to put this crap in rng boxes, Im out. Not playing the lottery just so I can have my character looking nice. I dont like gambling unless im the one profiting off the suckers playing. Anybody who always argues with ’’it’s just skins!‘’. You tell me what I should do after I go through all the content thats offered to me. That’s right. it’s time to play dress up and spend some of that money I made from spamming 1 in dungeons
