Curiosity here RE: Chairs and Tables
If the Guild hall furniture was functional, I’d be inclined to waste more gold on it.
A few more animations/emotes wouldnt hurt either.
Apparently it’s not as easy to design for a game with 5 different races at varying heights as one might think.

“So, what’s the deal with chairs?”
A brief, surprised laugh. “You know, I honestly have no idea. One of the great challenges that we faced with chairs, and this is kind of ironic, is that because we put in five different races of differing heights into the game, we found we had to make every chair uniform and have everyone always sit on them the exact same way or build an entire system that recognizes the height of the chair and appropriately animates your character.”
Johanson adds dolefully, “We kind of forced ourselves into a corner where we either go back and re-art every chair in the game, or we build this system for sitting. I think in the grand scheme of things, given all the other projects, we have going on, sitting, as important as it is, is not something we’re currently working on.”
Maybe what they could do is sell a chair gizmo in the gem store that has a skillbar with a sit animation.
ANet may give it to you.
Colin addresses this on Guild Chat, as well. Again, saying it’s technically difficult to provide the ability to ‘sit’ on chairs in-game.
I believe it was during one of the Guild Chats focusing on Guild Halls, but I’m not sure.
Good luck.
When I play my female RP character to sit on a chair, I find /kneel is enough for me. Most chair’s there’s room for that if you get it just right (Though sometimes you’ll sit ‘horizontally’)
And an RPer, I let imagination do most of the work for me, which is a good thing. We don’t want everything spoon-fed into us. Same with emotes, I think the /em custom emote is fine as it is.
Anet, ever considered allowing our characters to actually be able to sit in chairs?
They did, prior to launch. They couldn’t figure out a cost-effective way to get characters of all sizes (from the smallest asura to the fatest/tallest norn) to be able to sit in one-size-fits-all furniture.
I mean do you not find it ridiculous that you have tables and chairs; chairs more specifically, that you cannot sit?
No, I don’t find it ridiculous, or at least no more inconsistent than anything else.
It’s a video game, in which meteor showers fall on foes and allies alike, but damage only foes. In which ‘burning’ doesn’t burn, it just causes DoT pulses. In which a foe with a single HP left can cause as much damage as one with full health. In which you can sometimes walk through a highly-visible tree, but you can’t walking over a tiny root of the same tree.
I mean, let’s look at it more closely. You walk into a bar, pub, or a well respected place of establishment, and you see a table in the corner, and with that table in the corner you have chairs, and with those chairs you have people STANDING by them.
Not too much in the game can handle being looked at too closely.
To be clear, I don’t RP seriously and I’d still love to see usable furniture. However, there are tons of other things I’d prefer to see in the game first.
tl;dr usable furniture would be good; I still think ANet’s made the right choice to focus on other things.
