Why do so meny people are making more and more alts? I have 1 main thief and othet none above lvl 9 just wanted to check out, but there are people with 8 alts all lvl 80, i dont get it dont they have 1 fev char? Why is that

Because there are rewards that you can’t achieve with only one character? Becoming member of the three orders need at least three. Getting all cultural armors need at least one character of each race. And so on…

To farm more is one reason. To experiment. To explore various build and capabilities. Some likes to see how it looks. Various reasons actually…

I have 8 alts; 4 level 80s and one level 65 on his way.

Yes, I have a job…I’m just lucky it allows me to play a lot.

Why do I do it? Two reasons:

1. I enjoy testing out multiple characters and builds so that I can experience as much of the game as possible. It also allows me to understand my opponents and their strategies in WvW and PvP.

2. I enjoy PvE and play in a pretty active guild. I like the ability to bring the class that is most needed for a given situation

That’s not to say that I don’t have my favorites. For dungeons, I tend to use my guardian first (unless I’m using the dungeon to level up a character). For WvW and PvP, I bring my warrior or thief.

Because there is nothing else to do? I mean what can you do, dungeon hit DR after two its done. Farm for low drop loot? How many hair pulling hours of that would you do?

There’s only one choice make a new character. Most of what Anet did after 80 is pretty poorly done almost amateur hourish. Which honestly have they really ever tackled something like this, no.

Anet’s redeeming quality is the craft they put into the world and stories. Though ya they all end individually at 30. It’s still fun. I’m only working on my third right now though.

Why limit yourself to 1/8th of the gameplay offered?

I like playing all styles, even if I have a favourite. My alts aren’t 80, since I don’t rush them, but it’s still fun.

And yes, as a little bonus you have a few achievements, and in some cases it can be handy to have a different char availlable.

I like the possibility of exploring every race and class. So far I have 4 alts:
Main elementalist asura level 80
Alt necromancer sylvari level 80
Alt norn thief level 20
alt human ranger level 15
alt charr warrior level 3 that has so far only been used in PvP
I tend to do dungeons on my level 80 and I re-experience the fun in leveling on my lower levels. I’m able to do all professions. My level 80s can get high level mats for my low levels to work with, my level 80s can share their money with my low levels. I figured out my faw race, class and my favorite zones. Still when all of those hit level 80 I’ll probably get enough gold to buy gems, will get an extra character slot and start yet another asura. After all I still have engineer, guardian and a mesmer to try out

I am so tempted to make a shortbow thief. But I ONLY like the shortbow, don’t like any of there other weapons, hate stealth, hate steal, and like very few of there slotted skills.

But the shortbow is so much fun…

Guild Wars was always about the little goals you set yourself. For me I really enjoy getting into the different playstyles of the professions; at the start I made eight chars, one of each profession and including all the races, (will help when the birthday presents start coming next year) and one of my goals is to get them all to level 80. So far I’m about halfway there. Levelling is not exactly slow in GW2.

Each profession is another 100 hours or more of entertainment for me, on top of which there are opportunities to see different parts of the story, earn more map completion rewards, try out different builds etc.

I may not play them all regularly but I do tend to find jobs for several of the characters – my main tends to be the one I’ll go to for high-end content such as dungeons, I have another geared for WvW, another in MF gear for farming, another geared for group play and support etc. It’s fun to be able to pick a char and play without fiddling with gear, and the variety of gameplay keeps it interesting.

I agree this approach is not for everybody – there are advantages to just playing one character – but this is my perspective for the benefit of the OP who wanted to understand the motivation.

Because end game means doing fractals now, and that’s not fun. So we’re playing alts and trying to pretend like the Nov 15th patch never happened.

Only reason I do is for karma jugs. That’s about it from me.

Because playing with such a limited selection of builds per character is extremely boring.
