Let’s hope this will come with an inspect feature and auto-grouping.
Maybe even filter players by gear(infusion)score? Did you find anything hinting towards this?
You never know.
Yeah, let’s really hope this will come so we have no more reason to waste our time playing GW2.
Occam Pi (Ele), Acaena Elongata (Warrior), Finja Salversdotir (Ranger),
Bytestream (Engineer), Vim Whitespace (Thief)
It is quite possible that it is a tester-only item that somehow managed to get into the live code.
It does feel quite logical for them to have these kind of tools when testing balance and such.

Agreed
Well, if this is to be a progression-game, we need the tools to help us progress. That includes DPS-optimization (and DPS-recording partymembers to see who’s slacking) as well as gearchecks so I know whom I invite to that level 22 fractal.
Do I want this? Kitten, no! I hate it like mad. But it’s the logical extension of a progression-based MMO and I can very well understand anyone who asks for it (as well as an LFG-tool).
If it’s finally implemented, it’ll be time for me to quote Traherne, for once: “This isn’t going to end well. Moving on!”
This might be a dev-only tool for monitoring and playtesting…

why are those any worse than gear/ stat linking?
I know you were hurt by your casual play in other mmos but dont blindly hate on tools that give useful info. Its bad enough that you cant optimize your play for lack of ingame ehp/dps/ hps figures.
I want this feature in the game and here’s why;
Tools like this provide me with empirical statistics which improve my ability to play the game. Guild Wars 2 combat has A LOT more to it than just stationary damage dealing – but I want to know how I can perform under ideal conditions and strive for that ideal condition whilst supporting my group.
People who use this feature as a “I’m better than you” tool are idiots. You know who they are – they’re the people who spam /party with recount after every encounter. You do not want to group with these people.
I want to know what, exactly, is the difference if I drop 20 power and gain 10 precision/10 toughness in REAL combat terms. Tools like this provide obsessive people like me great enjoyment. It’s about improving myself, not about telling other people they’re “bads”.
Seems to me that it’s a dummy dev only item that is spoofing the “tps report” from Office Space.
As a gear progression game, it is only fair that the players are given the tools to better compare their items. This also allows a player to discern who is a viable party member for the most difficult content based on their statistics.
In order to get maximum enjoyment out of “vertical progression”, a player must be able to see the numerical increase in their effectiveness.

It’s not an item, also the dev stuff seems to be prefixed by TEST or QA.

Inspecting someone and being asked to link something, though achieving the same expected result, are somewhat different in how someone’s well-being is handled. Inspection is borderline invasion of someone’s privacy, while asking someone is consensual with agreement from both parties regarding information being traded.
Personally, I never liked being ‘inspected’ without my consent; and I don’t know many people who like to be inspected without their permission. That’s not saying I’m trying to hide something, though that could be the case for others (which a search warrant is often requested from superiors if it involves the law), but if someone is interested in what I have, they could always ask me about it. I don’t mind responding appropriately to it.
As with DPS meters, I see the good intentions with this, but I have seen tools like these used the wrong way almost all the time. Often times, I see them used as a way to prove one’s “leetness” with other party members instead of as a personal assessment tool.
What I can see, however, is some kind of “contribution rating” meter that is calculated based on a large variety of parameters, damage being one of them. Other things that could be considered would be providing your party members support with boons, helping downed members get back up, using crowd control abilities, and using environmental items that may be required to complete the encounter. It could work similarly to the Bronze/Silver/Gold rating system used for Dynamic Events.

As Ari said, the intentions might be good but after playing wow for a long time and seeing addons like recount and gearscore being developed and used in an elitist manner (not seldom by people who werent really up to par).

People have been enjoying themselves just fine, and did in other games as well even without any measure of dps. The problem with meters in guild wars 2 is that there is no holy trinity. There are so many other things to do to help the group rather than just blindly dpsing and healing aint that super. I doubt most people would need meters for maximum enjoyment. Maximum enjoyment =/= maximum dps.

There is more to meters than dps. You could measure healing rate, how ofter and fast you pick downed people, boons used on team, conditions cured, damage blocked, projectiles blocked, skill usage, time of keeping aggro from boss and probably many others.
Then after run you could see if someone was doing high dps, was supporting team or just doing nothing in his MF gear.

I believe the post you are quoting is meant to be a sardonic one in regards to the current direction this game appears to be heading in. Do not take it literally.
…And so it begins! Hello Gearscore, goodbye cruel world!

We’ve been awake since March 2007! Please help!
“GW2 the game with more rolls than roles!”
I’m finding it hard to get enraged by that tiny picture with no context of the in game discussion around it.
So, if we count the symbols and traits like the guardian’s virtue of justice, to whom will we count the dps for?
Why would a guardian even activate an ability like that, if the run is a dps race?
Why use symbols and allow party combos when you can use only self enhancing abilities?
Especially in a game that has no tanks and healers, this means that all 5 will be running the selfish race towards the top of the recount table.
I think that the actual measurement which is probably very hard to accomplish is the team contribution score.
This will take into account dps, heal, revives and how much your abilities/combo fields and utility skills contributed to the rest of the team.
A guardian that does 1000 dps, but doesn’t die and gets his party to do 1000 dps more by activating virtue of justice and shileding them preventing down times (which reduce dps) worth much more than a guardian that is self centered and does 1500 dps.
I understand though the frustration from forming a group to go FoM with a level 50 character that don’t have all traits and the gear is by far inferior if not totally lacking, or the situation where you go FoM level 15 with someone who has no agony resistance.
Sorry, but a recount would not work in this game.
1. It’s not all about DPS in dungeons. People with support specs would be labeled unwelcomed by the narrowminded DPS kittens.
2. Condition damage spells (except bleed up until 25 stacks) only count for the person with the highest condition damage stat, the rest only add duration. People with just a few point less condition damage would lose the whole tick, so wouldnt really reflect actual dps.
People shouldnt be forced into the min-max playstyle due to a stupid dps meter. I’ve freely chosen to spec my engi and mesmer as glasscannons (although, mesmer doesnt feel half as glassy as engi), while my necro is more a DoT tank with high toughness.
I keep seeing more and more misconceptions in this game. Like say the new fly “lf1m for X, need heavy armor”. Many fail to see how fragile a heavy armor class is if they dont come with toughness.
Would however like to see some form of inspect, to be able to detect the MF leeches.
