A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
People tells it affects only drop from mob.
Many of us started to notice how too often if you play the same stuff you ends up with no rewards.
I m recently playing lot of fractals and seeing 3 between blue and greens in most chests (even final chest) tells me DR affects more than anet told us.
You are supposed to drop 5-10 items not 3 blues afaik.
Now before you suggest the “unluck” answer, just mind i waited 1 year before even posting this looking at how drops worked.
I was possibly too lazy to write data and collect screens of everything, but we could start now if people wants to.
Mostly because i suspect its also the reason why first timers and casuals gets so many drops in fractals.
I think we have enough signals to suspect DR affects stuff it should not (as happened in the past).
There will never be a clear explanation of DR because that defeats the purpose of DR. The idea is that if people knew exactly what DR is they could program bots to get around it.
I don’t believe it’s supposed to affect chests, but it could be bugged. Would take a lot of data to suggest it though.
I’ve had my fare share of issues with Droprates as well
for example I spend several hours farming tree nodes for Firefox clusters a few days back and after compining about it in map chat the day later I find 2 of them in the first and second node I find in Drytop and then another 2 in the same node the day later..
I also spent days running around collecting Buried chests for utter garbage rewards 20+ keys wasted and then yesterday again after compaining in map about droprate I opened 11 chests in one sandstorm and got 2 exotic nomads recipies 3 rare weapons and 2 Exotic Adventurers scarfs..
from recent experience it seems that complaining about droprate in map makes me lucky lol
but seriously though I’ve had a lot of bad luck with droprates in the past
it took me almost a years worth of playing to find my first random exotic drop while wearing magic find armor for almost the whole year
it seems I have on and off days randomly.. sometimes I find many rares and some exotics in a short time and then most days the only rares I can find are guaranteed drops..

Pretty much DR (Diminishing Returns) would more likely to trigger if you start repeating same content.
Atleast on wiki, dungeons have minimum timer for DR of 30 minutes.
Perhaps same applies to PvE, once you kill the same mob second time, DR starts to tick and add up, refreshing the timer and adding more points…
But dunno, it could be 1 hour or more for PvE, since it’s easier to repeat, than dungeons usually.
Best way to not invoke DR, would be to move to another map and do stuff there.
Diminishing Returns was clearly explained in GW1, the exact same system is in place in GW2.
Simple: STOP DOING THE EXACT SAME THING IN THE EXACT SAME AREA.

Incorrect. DR in gw2 is random (if not broken, no way to tell really). Theres been many times where I can literally see DR kick in within a minute of the first event in Orr for the day. You get some gear, some crafting stuff and such then bam 9 out 10 drops is suddenly greys.

I don’t do same stuff twice in short time periods, not even dungeons. I still seem to get same rewards everyday, wether I played Water/Arcana/Staff Elementalist or Full Berserker GS Warrior.
The way DR works was also changed with the feature patch / megaserver.
It now starts slowly that you get less exp with each event instead like before where
you suddenly go from 10.000 exp to 100 exp or whatever you now get maybe 9.800
den 9.500 .. den 9000 .. or something like that.
Its however also harder to remove it now. Before if i just logged out for an hour
i could do the same events again for an hour, now that doesn’t help anymore and
you really have to do things in other zones for a while. Even just doing 2-3 events
brings you directly back to getting 9800 .. 9500 .. 9000 and so on.
Thats at least my experience from leveling my last character in Dredgehaut Cliffs.
So players like me, who have done dungeons to death and now just play PvP and fractals are entirely short stopped. I have 100% map completion, I have legendary, I have ascended gear on multiple alts. So In order to circumvent bots and farmers, regular players who just stick to what they enjoy are poorest. I guess high level fractals and PvP is the most non challenging content to stick to and therefore if you only play them you should be rewarded less than champ train zerging. Makes sense now that i said it out loud.
However I can tell you this. If I move map zones, my Pvp chests reward me better. If I then play any content, the loot tables are better. So much for the notion DR does not affect chests. I played 20 hours of PvP with 240% MF and got 2 rares and 4 t6 Mats from chests. I move three zones and played a little while in each and returned to PvP. My next 4 chests all contained either a rare or t6 and that was after my birthday booster bonus had gone and I was back to 120% MF.
I play this game these days just for time wasting. I stopped thinking it rewarded players a long time ago.

From what are you stopped ? The only thing is that you get less exp / karma when you
farm the same events in a very small area for over an hour.

I’ve only been affected by DR once in all my gameplay. That was when I did the Queensdale train once to get my monthly. Once I changed characters, it was promptly removed.
OP, I don’t believe you will ever get more explanation than the quotes from Devs you can find on the Wiki.

I have leveled quite some chars with a specific double-event in Dredgehaunt with
use of guesting so i could repeat it again and again on 3 different servers.
And the last time i tried that after Megaserver patch it worked different for me.
Before it was always very fast going down from max exp to nearly zero ..
Else .. i also just had DR when Cursed Shore farming tunnel events was popular
back in October 2012 ^^

It generally takes 2-3 days of not playing that character at all (forget doing different stuff map completions etc) before DR resets so I start getting Rares/Exotics at all.
The whole character is bugged and drops from everything is lower than it should be.
Account DR:
Where the whole account suffers from DR regardless of what you do.
- This one seems to require doing the same thing all the time (regardless of character): eg doing fractals every day will result in diminishing returns.
Generally from experience it seems to require several days offline or doing something else to reset for a long period of time.
I agree with the poster that DR seems to be a heavy handed and implements too quickly (affecting chests, drops and all rewards). There are many styles of play where individuals will specialise in one aspect (such as Dungeons or Fractals) once they have completed the other content that they enjoy (eg PvE – 100% mapping etc).

I am not too sure about that. I’ve run the same dungeon paths on consecutive days without any noticable DR. Same EXP, money, and loot was sometimes better on a second or third day. Also with fractals. I used to run fractals daily as well. Sometimes 2-3 a day, and didn’t experience DR with those. Again, sometimes getting an ascended drop on later consecutive days. Of course I would do my next highest personal level, then go back and do 10 levels lower for the karma, and never noticed a change.
I think some people are confusing DR with bad RNG. If you take a few days off, go back to a farming area and spend an hour there, with RNG you could get poor drops, but attribute it to DR. I have a few farming areas for T6 mats I like to go to on a daily basis. I recently went to one of those places and after spending an hour there, I wasn’t getting much mats at all, T6 or otherwise. The next day went back to those same places and 95% of mobs killed drop a T5 mat. The third day, a few T5s and several T6s. So it would seem that I was experiencing DR in reverse :P Either way don’t confuse DR with RNG as far as drops. It could be you were just having a bad RNG day and thought it was DR taking effect.
Also from what I understood was that DR didn’t kick in until you were farming an area for at least 2 hours or so. But that of course is based on personal observations and not what it may actually be.
