Defiance & Unshakable accepted?
The alternatives to Defiance are two:
a) remove it, bosses will be simply stun-locked by multiple players, making encounters pointless
b) something new. And this is the hard part where very few (if any) solutions have been presented so far.
It’s been discussed on a regular basis, enough that most people are tired of discussing it and really hoping that ArenaNet have got the message.
One simple approach, for instance, is to make Defiant have a duration, so that instead of having to waste X long-recharge interrupt skills for one interrupt, you can simply space them out… so it prevents stunlock, but you can still get a few stuns in. Another possibility, which could be used in concert, could be to make it so that there are skills that are cheaper than actual stuns which can be used to remove or even steal Defiant, possibly simply by making Defiant into a regular boon that can be stripped or stolen by boon removal (which is usually a lot “cheaper” than hard CC). I could see there being a place myself for Defiant to be a mechanic available to players as a softer alternative to Stability.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
I really like the idea of defiance being a regular boon. I also think it’d be easy to counter the stun-locking. Bosses could for example have regular attacks added alongside the one-shot-abilities-you-need-to-dodge-every-15-seconds. I know this suggestion is shallow, I’m just throwing ideas.
I dont mind defiance at all. When i first started playing elementalist i was really annoyed by it because ice bow 5 never worked on bosses lol but it became a new challenge. If you have five people in your group you should be able to easily strip the boss of his defiance stacks with some patience and planning. I actually have fun sometimes watching what other members are doing, mainly warriors and guardians to know when i should put down ice bow knowing stakcs will be gone or to use my own ccs. Im not opposed to changes to make it easier for pugs where a warrior will runin and use mace 5 but i like the concept in general that you cant always stun and you have to pay attention to do it properly
It’s up there with PvE conditions. Discussed to death by the community (and those discussions expose a prevailing general dislike for the mechanic as is) and zero news/updates/mention of it from ANet.
Works fine for me, but in pugs you need to be fast if you want to use Deep Freeze for example. However, I think Anet might have realised the curreny state of things is not ideal, as most big bosses since the 2nd Jubilee are completely immune to CC.
Have the community really accepted Defiance as a working game mechanic in PvE?
Mostly people have given up on discussing each and every feature that makes PvE poor, and decided to leave the game.
The thing with Defiance is that it doesn’t really matter. Even if it did not exist, there would be no point in using interrupt because there is no situation in which using an interrupt would be better than just dodging. Unlike in the original Guild Wars, interrupts are mostly useless here. That flaw should be adressed and then Defiant reworked, but we all know that ArenaNet won’t do either.

That’s pretty much I’ve gathered since it was introduced.
They must be replaced by a generic autobalance system that also works for all other creatures, and that takes into account the creature’s rank (“player” being also a rank for this mechanic) and how many players are around for how they work, and that has additional settings to adjust them for particular creatures.
Once the system is in place, it’ll work for everything: Damage, conditions, control effects.
And for all creatures, no matter if they are just normal rank enemies or epic bosses or event players.
Done right, it could replace defiant, unshakable and even indomitable, and keep in check loopholes in balance that are often abused by meta builds.
