I tell them that I find the game to be the most artistically pleasing game I have played, including the music… and no subscription fee. Not having to fight other players for farming nodes has resulted in my WoW/ Lotro/etc induced hatred of other players dissipating. If you like to jump, the jump puzzles are fantastic. I always point this out because JPs are one of my favorite things. If they want the Holy Trinity, don’t buy this game. Same if they enjoy hardcore dungeons and raids.

I enjoy the combat mechanics, albeit that is mostly PVE. The closest I come to PvP is WvW and I am usually a zerg baby because I suck so I really don’t hold an educated opinion.

The game has a massive problem: dev interaction with players. Anet has a history of really messing things up and not being receptive to criticism, constructive or not. It also has unresolved problems that have been borked for 2 years now (like condition damage) and that the RNG is the most brutal I have ever seen.

I tell prospectives specifically about the trait problem because I think it is the most damaging current issue and send them the thread. Then I let them make up their own minds.

I used to be a diehard fanboy so have had people coming to me for GW2 opinions. This is the gist of what I tell them.

I am going to try to describe this game as I would to a friend who asks me. I will try to avoid my fanboy vision of this game.

I will start to say if you happen to like WoW you will probably not stay and play GW2 too long. There is now gear threadmill and there is no point in doing Endgame conentet as there is no special weapon or armor that is better than anything else. You don’t need to farm for the best stuff in the game since you can do everything in the game with just mediocre stuff Except for a special dungeon where players advance in Dungeon levels and as the levels gets higher the dungeons gets harder and require you to equip special gear (That you will get in that dungeon). Most of the content in the game is focused on casual players so if you are a hardcore Raidplayer you may be disapointed as the difficulty is pretty easy. But if you usually don’t play games very much and you lack reactions you may find this game very hard as the Dodge system is the core of survival in this game.

Many people may claim that you have to grind/farm in this game and in some places in the game world you will find farmers that take advantage of failing “Quests” so that they will repeat fast and so that they can farm. There is no purpose of farming in this game, the only thing that it does is that you will get stuff quicker. If you just play the game and enjoy it you will eventually have what others farm their socks of and in my opinion as you farm you will get tired of repeating content and stopp playing. But if you like farming, there is a possebility for it.

I said “Endgame content” before, well this could be untrue for some and true for others. So as there is no gear threadmill and no raid and no Hardcore gamers stuff there is no “Endgame content”, but there is WvW, The special dungeon and Living story and these stuff can also be called “Endgame content” as they are best played when you have got maxed level and good gear and compleated the main story. These “Endgame content” is always there and there will always be something new for you.

Living Story? Well it is GW2 main thing and I think Anet is focusing on this. Living story is like what happens after the mainstory and it affects the world as it continues, it is an interesting story and it feels almost like following a Tv-show series as it has one new episode every 2 weeks except when there is breaks and that has bothered me the most. The breaks are way to long. I can’t decide for you if you like the living story so you will have to see it for yourself or read about it here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Release .

One would of course question why people that quite clearly don’t like the game still hang around on these forums everyday instead of just moving on.

Because we want to see this game be as great as it could be.

But this is the misnomer. As great as it can be for who?

Different people have different ideas of what makes a game great. I’m pretty sure a game I thought was great would be something many would hate, and vice versa.

Just seems a bit presumptuous to think that one way is better, or the way any one person would want it to be is the best way.

In some areas this game is like a lot of other games. One of this is players.

Those who don’t like it, are few but noisy and consider their personal view to be a law of nature, those who do like it are busy playing and don’t care about useless discussions about how this game is worse than its prequel or missed opprtunities – and sometimes they also consider their view as a law of nature.
At the end of the day, constructive criticism wins by a big margin. If you don’t like it and can no longer be constructive, step away from it for a time and then return, when you feel better – or do something else, but stop being toxic. Your aversion is yours, you don’t need to try to spread it like a virus so you don’t feel alone with it anymore.

On a side-note: I stopped playing GW1 when it came to Cantha, couldn’t convice myself to stay around Kaineng for very long, in my personal view the most awful maps I ever experienced anywhere. I am quite sure a lot of you disagree and that’s normal. All of this is about personal taste. So relax and don’t overestimate your importance.

generic

LMAO this game generic? This game was talked about as being original by almost all reviews. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! Generic LMAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Yeah and its also very hard to level in this game too LMFAOOOOOO /sarcasm

You are trying too hard here.

Well, calling this game generic is pretty laughable. I mean, you know, is that because of the lack of a trinity or is it that everyone can rez everyone else without using a skill slot?

Actually it’s not necessarily individual features that make this game what it is, but the specific combination of features, intentionally chosen to provide a more cooperative PvE experience. I’ve played a whole lot of MMOs and none of them feel like this.

In fact, I can’t think of too many MMORPGs that did away with quest hubs and traditional questing altogether. Rift may have had dynamic events, but I still leveled by going quest hub to quest hub.

Actually I was not referring to the content of Zoso’s post. Just the formatting.

The Kaineng maps were awful, but The Jade Sea and Echovald Forest are among the most beautiful and interesting map sets to hit the franchise. They solidified Factions as my favorite expansion, whereas, despite the high quality of Nightfall, much of Nightfall’s repetitive desert and repainted desert terrain turned me off.

How I’ve been explaining the GW2 experience to others:

  • visually fantastic
  • grindfest
  • RNG above and beyond what is necessary to have any kind of enjoyment
  • skin and achievement based type of MMO
  • lack of expansions
  • pushing gem store sales
  • doesn’t follow its predecessor’s lore as strictly (leaves it to flounder), therefore leaves some big and unanswered holes in the game’s history
  • a game that could have gone so much further by now but just hasn’t
  • until recently communication sucked, but has only started to make inroads. It won’t fully grow thanks to Mike O’Brien’s hardlined approach to communicating the progress of the development of the game, and Anet’s “policy”
  • lots of potential to tap, but it won’t evolve as quickly as the players want it to.

Has really nice ingame graphics,
partially really bad armor/weapon designs,
starting to heavily gear to gemstore stickups,
still has a lot of potential,

but….

is turning more and more into a Asian MMO grindhouse

Boxie Togg (main)… probably Tyrias only Asuran Mesmer that ultimately fails at jumping puzzles
Stinky McLane… the only Necro known to have a toothpaste fetish
Lefty (give me a second) Fiddlesticks… one Engineer, two clumbsy hands…

Its a solid game that has enough content to justify the initial purchase (particularly if its on sale) but don’t expect follow through on hype, advertisement, or promises.

Im a Star Wars fan so I don’t go to Star Trek conventions and tell people how bad Star Trek is of example

The difference is that what we have here is GW2 fans talking about disappointment with the current development of GW2.

Star Wars fans do go to Star Wars conventions, fan sites, etc to complain about current and past developments in the Star Wars universe. “Han shot first.”

One would of course question why people that quite clearly don’t like the game still hang around on these forums everyday instead of just moving on.

Well, my reason for lingering, while playing GW2 has heavily declined to just “I feel like looking at huge dmg numbers that DPS builds do, until I get bored, since there’s no enjoyable combat in PvE” and “Well, new update, it might keep me interested until the lack of enjoyable combat in PvE hits again”.

As being “Casual PvE adventurer” who just adventures and enjoys combat, which is big part of the game, do short farming sometimes for extra gold and rarely tread near hard content or PvP, unless someone organizes it.
I was same in GW1, only adventures in general PvE, mainly alone…

I bought both GW1 and GW2 on release, GW1 offered good combat experiences that didn’t bore me, since I could use any skill I’d like to use, mainly since mobs use same skills as players and offer good fight for the adventures…

Yet it’s the combat mechanics offered in GW2, which keeps me from completely quitting or returning back to GW1, although over half of these combat mechanics are not used in content I play most…

Past months, I’ve spent most time in Dry Top, due to having better mobs (Although still despising the majority of mobs having same vulnerability to direct dmg, as in other PvE content), but repeating 1 map over and over becomes boring…

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

I play the game regularly, I guess I just complain a lot. There are things that I don’t personally like, but fully understand why they are done. Then there are things that are done that just don’t make sense to me and likely never will.

I do think the game is making steps in the right direction as of late. The permanent content living story is a good thing, even though I don’t like the content offered. An expansion pack could completely refresh the game. Assuming they really are working on one.
The talk about raids is huge for me. It’s been awhile since I’ve been “into” raiding, just a mix of life and burn out stopped me from participating in them. I’m hoping the raids introduced here fill the same craving with about 1/10th of the invested time and at least the same difficulty.

This is a red herring. There are 24 hours in a day. You sleep maybe 8 of those. Even if you work 8 of those, then you have 8 hours to play Guild Wars 2. There are so many things I enjoy doing that I don’t enjoy doing 8 hours every single day. Therefore people who like the game can play for 4 hours and spend 2 hours on the forums.

I post while I’m playing. On load screens. Waiting for a PvP match to start. Waiting for a dungeon group to assemble. Waiting for a guild mission to start.

Saying posting on the forums means you’re not enjoying the game is silly.

Game is great while it lasts. Easy to get into and the journey to 80 is enjoyable. The event system is a cool alternative to quests. As far as single player goes, the personal story has some great moments, though you will be severely disappointed in the ending’s execution. Treat it as a side game and it’ll last you for a long time.

Worth a buy but wait for the sale (they happen fairly often) and for the love of god don’t buy stuff from the gem store, it only encourages them.

+ Nice first impression, fun combat, beautiful art design. Promising at first. Some really good quality of life stuff (moving stuff directly to collection, rezzing, easy to get into huge events etc.).

- Lack of substantial update, not on par with the industry standard, lack of customizable UI, mostly shallow encounters, rather towards casual play. Losing hope for a positive future. Terrible QA. Too much emphasis towards gem store which makes one think that the only thing they want to do is make easy money with minimum effort.

Good combat mechanics ruined by sub-par profession balance and an overabundance of particle effects. Balance updates are far too infrequent and lack testing for PvP to be anything more than an afterthought. Content delivery system is free, but the quality is equivalent to the price tag. Overall a game with tons of unachieved promise and potential. A textbook case of a wonderful concept ruined by poor design choices/updates.
